Happy Birthday, Church! Today is Pentecost Sunday, the day we celebrate the giving of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the church. The church was “born” to con nue Jesus’s mission in the world and is to be the body of Christ for the world. You will hear in our Holy Communion Liturgy today the words, “Pour out your Holy Spirit on us, and on these gi s of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.” These words invoke the Holy Spirit to be present and to make the bread and grape juice to be the body and blood of Christ for us…and for all of us to be the body of Christ for the world, to be the Church in the world. In our ongoing sermon series, More Than Conquerors, we are looking at some of the challenges we face in life and the focus today is on how we respond when the next step seems be too difficult or too big. How do we go on? Over 2000 years ago, Jesus’s disciples weren’t all that sure about the task before them. A er his crucifixion and resurrec on, Jesus appeared to the disciples and gave them the Great Commission, to go out into the world and make disciples of all na ons, to bap ze and teach the people all Jesus had taught them. That seemed like an overwhelming task for them and a dangerous one as well. What are we to do when these mes happen in our lives? They WILL happen and we have a choice as to how we will respond. We are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus, who loves us. Thank you for being the Church,
Kathy Brockman

A Statement of Faith of The United Church of Canada We are not alone, we live in God's world. We believe in God: who has created and is crea ng, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the church: to celebrate God's presence, to love and serve others, to seek jus ce and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen.
