It is a word you o en hear. Some mes when you sneeze, someone will say, “Bless you.” In the South, you some mes hear people refer to others and then add, “Bless his (or her) heart.” I almost always close my emails, le ers, and the front of the bulle n with the word, “Blessings.” Although we don’t always think about it this way, a blessing is a powerful gi . To be blest is to receive approval. In the ancient patriarchal period of the Bible, when a father gave a blessing to his son, the blessing not only conveyed approval, but was also understood to pass on all the powers, prosperity, health, and wisdom of the father to the son. When we ask God’s blessings, we are asking for both God’s approval and for God’s power to be passed along to those being blest. Here at DUMC, we are fortunate to have literally hundreds of children, young people, teachers, and school personnel. Each year, as school begins, we have what we call, “The Blessing of the Backpacks.” Of course, what we really mean by that is not that we are blessing the backpacks themselves, but rather we are asking for God to give God’s approval and pass along God’s power to all of these people as they begin this new school year. May this new school year be a me where all sense that we as a church are suppor ng them, all are safe, all gain knowledge and wisdom, all experience the grace and love of God, and all grow into the fullness of the stature of Christ. And the next me you hear someone say, “Bless you,” know that they are offering you a wonderful gi . Blessings,
Dan

Blessings,
Dan
