As many of you know, I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale. My family moved there from Michigan while I was a child when my father’s business transferred him to Florida. I say, I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale. Actually, I grew up in a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale called Planta on Isles. It was a nice home, not extravagant, but certainly warm, comfortable, and a wonderful place to grow up. My parents were both loving parents that challenged me to do my best in school, supported me in the extracurricular ac vi es (i.e. sports) in which I par cipated, and held me accountable when I stepped out of line. They were hard working, my mother was involved in the church, and they provided me with a wonderful example of a loving marriage. I was one of the most fortunate young people I know and I pray that the way I live today honors them in the lessons they tried to teach me. Now, think of this: There are literally thousands of children right now who do not have that sort of opportunity. They do not grow up in loving homes where they receive love and care. In some cases, their parents are no longer living. In some cases the parents are at a place in their lives where they are not mentally, emo onally, or physically able to care for their children. In some cases, the parents have just le them and walked away. Currently, in the state of Georgia, there are 150 children who sleep with strangers (workers with the Department of Family and Children Services) each night. Each week, our United Methodist Children’s Home turns away 40 children needing a foster home. The good news is that there are 10,000 foster homes in Georgia. The challenging news is that more are needed. Here at DUMC, we began a journey about a year and a half ago and this morning we are commissioning two families as Foster Care Parents: Jeff & Graciela Chadwick and Allen & Sandra Bell. I hope you will make it a part of your daily devo on to pray for them, and that you will look for ways to support them even as they provide a home full of love for children who would not otherwise have it. Blessings,
Dan
