Instruments of Peace There is a well known prayer called, The Prayer of St. Francis. Partly because of its name, many think the prayer actually goes back to the 13th century saint, Francis of Assisi. However, historians point out that in actuality the prayer can be traced no further than the early 1900’s. According to one story, the prayer first appeared during World War I. It was found written on a holy card of St. Francis, but it bore no name. Since it appeared on the holy card, it came to be called, The Prayer of St. Francis. In any case, the prayer certainly reflects the spirit of this peace-loving saint, who believed that faith at its best is never a solitary experience, but one that is meant to be shared by making a positive difference in the lives of others. The first part of the prayer goes like this:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;

HISTORY OF ART IN THE CHURCH

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light;

and where there is sadness, joy. In a world like ours that is often ripped with strife, engaging in a ministry of peace is surely one of the greatest of all ministries. I bring this up, because this morning we will be commissioning our new Stephen Ministers: Kenneth Abele, Glenn Conoley, Chris Cox, Elaine Edwards, Carla Rogg, Nicole Sullivan and Dixie Wedding. Also our Ministry Moment will be focused on the Great Day of Service. I am grateful to all who participate in each of these ministries. By engaging in these ministries, they are proving to be “instruments of God’s peace.” Blessings,

Dan
