SEPTEMBER 4, 2016
THANK YOU! As you know, tomorrow is Labor Day. No doubt, it will be celebrated in all sorts of ways. Many have already gone out of town for one last summer fling before we jump into the regular rou ne of the fall. Some will enjoy picnics or cookouts or a round of golf. S ll others may pull aside from their regular work to do odd jobs around the house. Labor Day first got going back in 1885. It started through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state legisla on. Although the first state bill was introduced in New York, Oregon actually became the first state to recognize Labor Day on February 21, 1887. During the next decade, other states followed suit and on June 28, 1894 Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September each year a legal holiday. Labor Day was first established as a na onal tribute to the contribu ons workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well‐being of our country. In other words, the first Monday in September was set aside each year as a way of expressing gra tude for the impact that workers have made in helping this na on become great. All this set me to thinking: I have the wonderful privilege of working with an amazing group of people here at the church. The staff of DUMC is among the finest I have ever witnessed. They are highly skilled, deeply dedicated, and every day they help to make Dunwoody a great church. At almost every staff mee ng, I remind them of two things, which I genuinely believe to be true. First, we are all in this together. Second, no one on staff is any more important than anyone else; and no one on staff is any less important than any one else. We just have different func ons. So, during this Labor Day Weekend, I want to use this occasion to express my personal word of “Thanks,” to a group of people I believe makes a huge difference: The Staff of Dunwoody United Methodist Church! Blessings,
Dan

O love, how deep, how broad, how high; How passing thought and fantasy; That God, the Son of God, should take; Our mortal form for mortals’ sake; For us he prayed, for us he taught; For us his daily works he wrought; By words and signs and ac ons, thus; S ll seeking not himself, but us; All glory to our Lord and God; For Love so deep, so high, so broad; The Trinity whom we adore; For ever and forever more. Amen.
