AUGUST 2015
CONNECTIONS OPPORTUNITIES FOR DUNWOODY METHODISTS TO CONNECT
GEARING UP! By the time you read this, I trust that most of you will have had an opportunity to pull away for a few days for a little R&R. Some may just be arriving home and this is among the first bit of mail you read as you settle into your chair. In either case, I hope your time away was physically and spiritually renewing, refreshing, and reenergizing. As we move into the month of August and the young people prepare to return to school, we at Dunwoody UMC are gearing up for an exciting new year. During our worship services, we will have Communion on August 2, the Blessing of the Backpacks on August 9, a Focus on Foster Care on August 16, Sunday School Teacher Dedication on August 23, and a Spotlight on Adult Sunday School on August 30. Our Chancel Choir will once again be in full swing as we enter the month and they are always such a blessing, aren’t they? On Saturday, August 15, literally hundreds of us will gather in the gym for “Foodstock 2015”. I remember last year. This was one of the first major events I attended as your pastor. I remember going home that night, physically exhausted, but spiritually energized to have been a part of helping to provide 300,000 meals for those who might not otherwise have anything to eat. You do not want to miss this! Our Wednesday Night Suppers will once again resume on August 19. Our Kitchen Staff is among the finest I have ever encountered and the meals promise to be delicious. Add to that the fellowship around the tables and the start of our Children’s Choirs on that same night, and you already get the picture. It is going to be a wonderful evening. Our Youth Group has had a very busy summer with choir tours, mission trips and so forth, so in one sense they have been in gear all summer. However, they will gear up for the fall with a special kick off event on August 23. They hope to have 15,000 water balloons on that day and they will be asking for your help. It sounds like a lot of fun and I for one plan to be present. This is only a sampling of all that will be gearing up in August. For more information be sure to read this entire edition of CONNECTIONS. In the meantime, I hope you are already beginning to make plans to be a part of the action. See you at Dunwoody UMC where we are growing in faith and serving in love! Blessings,
Dan

We are once again kicking off the Fall with FOODSTOCK 2015 by putting together at least 300,000 more meals for Stop Hunger Now. Let’s repeat our success last year and complete this challenge again. Please continue our fight against hunger! Our goal is to involve the entire community to experience the joy and the fun of working together for a great cause. We also need support during the event so if you don’t feel like you can stand at a table and make food packs we will have other support jobs for you to do. On Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., we will package 300,000 meals for children in need around the globe. This is your chance to make a real difference. WE NEED 1,200 VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS EVENT! Please consider giving two hours of your day to help us package these meals. Together, becoming the hands and feet of God, we can help feed over 300,000 children in just one day. Won’t you give just two hours to save so many? Don’t you think it’s time? To register, visit www.dunwoodyumc.org today! PLEASE WELCOME OUR NEW STAFF Josh Amerson was born and raised in Atlanta, not too far from Northlake Mall. His dad has been a radiologist at Northside Hospital for 30 years, his mom, a lifelong volunteer, and his sister a recent graduate of Mercer’s physical therapy program. Josh’s greatgranddad played for John Heisman, so Josh was an avid Georgia Tech fan…that is, until he became a member of the Dawg Nation while working toward a Biology degree at UGA. Josh and his wife, Lindsey, married a month after graduation in 2005, and during the following year Josh discerned a call into ordained ministry. He has been involved in ministry in the UMC for nine years and Rev. Josh Amerson and family finished at Candler in 2010. Lindsey is a PA anesthetist at Emory Midtown Hospital and is on faculty at Emory Medical School. Together Josh and Lindsey have two children: Luke, 8, and Caroline, 5. They love being outdoors, playing sports, hiking in North Carolina, and having dance parties in their living room. The Amerson family feels very blessed to become a part Dunwoody UMC, is excited to join the church in its ministries, and looks forward to being followers of Jesus Christ with this community of faith. Amy Rohan - Amy has been one of our fantastic Fours teachers for almost 7 years. She will transition into the Associate Director’s role in the preschool office for next year. Amy has a big servant heart and is very active at Dunwoody UMC, serving in many capacities. She will miss the classroom for sure, but is ready and eager for this new challenge in a preschool and church she loves with all her heart.

GRIEF SUPPORT MINISTRIES ON GOING GRIEF AND LOSS SUPPORT GROUP Suffering the loss of a loved one - whether it is a spouse, a child, a parent, relative or a “forever” friend - is one of the greatest losses anyone has to experience. The hurt that you are feeling can seem overwhelming at times as you journey through grief. Grief continues long after friends or relatives might think possible. To aid in your healing and offer support and encouragement, Dunwoody UMC is offering a Grief and Loss Support Group. This confidential group allows you to express your feelings and to share with others the pain and anguish that you are feeling. This group meets the fourth Sunday of each month from 1 - 2 p.m. in the Thomas Coke Room. GRIEF SUPPORT SESSIONS “As you journey down the path of grief, you may feel you’re wandering in a dense fog...uncertain of what lies ahead or which way to turn. You may wonder if you will ever see the sun again.” If this statement reflects how you are feeling, your church has a five-week session beginning Sunday, September 20 through Sunday, October 18 designed to help you take the time to grieve and learn how to begin to put back together those pieces that have been lost. There is no time table for grief and no one person grieves their loss the same - come and share with others who are on this same dark, uncertain path. Anyone is welcome to come at anytime. www.DunwoodyUMC.org

TRINITY TABLE
PRAISE AND GRATITUDE Over the next six weeks, the Prayer Ministry will focus on Praising God and expressing Gratitude for our many blessings. We want you to count your blessings and also tell us some of the ways God has blessed you and your family. We will share some of your remarks and photos in a special presentation during a Sunday worship service. Look for tables located near entrances where special cards will be provided to write down ways you have been blessed. This is for children and adults! After writing your card and placing it in the basket, be sure to take a “Gratitude Rock” to remind you to praise and thank God every day for your blessings. A wonderful blessing we all share is: We are free Americans and we live in the most wonderful country in the world. You take it from there!
Dunwoody UMC will prepare and serve lunch twice this year to over 300 homeless and working poor in downtown Atlanta at Trinity UMC. Sunday, August 23, 2015, 30 volunteers will be needed to attend and serve from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Volunteers will feed the guests a hot lunch and provide them with a “to-go” bag that includes 3 sandwiches, a dessert, and a beverage. We also need people to donate sandwiches and other food items prior to the event. Email Samantha Faklaris, samantha.faklaris@dunwoodyumc.org to sign up!
DIVORCECARE DivorceCare is a friendly, caring group of people with whom you will learn about and discuss important information on relevant topics (depression, loneliness, faith, single sexuality, finances, anger and others) through one of life’s most difficult experiences. Don’t go through separation or divorce alone. Or tell a friend who may need this support DivorceCare for Kids (DC4K) is a comprehensive 14 –week program that helps children through the grieving process brought on by divorce. It provides children with a safe and neutral place to recognize and learn how to share their feelings, and gives them the tools necessary to develop healthier relationships within their own families. If you know someone going through a divorce, make sure he or she knows about these groups; it might just be the best thing you could do to help. These 2 classes, which run concurrently, begin September 9 and continue through December 16. Although we skip Thanksgiving week, before the holiday season we will do a special adult component, SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS. All classes meet from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Adults – Parlor; Kids – Room 140. WOMEN’S MINISTRY UMW CIRCLE – PERSONAL GROWTH AND SHARING Our Circle is described as being “a very unique group of ladies who have varied interests and who are filled with much love— love for each other, love for our fellowmen and love of Christ. We are small in number but large in spirit. We are united in service to others who reach out for our help.“
Standing (left to right, front row) Barbara Cox, Glenda Embleau, Pat Webster, Frances Hallenberg, Jean Williams, Drada Hoover, Peg Foote, Jane Ayton, Betty Moreland, Guest speaker (left to right, back row) Nancy D’Ardenne, Betty Ringley
The Personal Growth and Sharing Circle meets at 9:30 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month September through May in the Young Adult Area. Please join us for some thought-provoking programs featuring various speakers. We attempt to meet the needs of our members through fellowship in Christ and participation in mission projects.
At this meeting Betty Moreland, who is retiring as the Liaison for Murphy-Harpst after 21 years, discussed the project of sending birthday cards to the young people at the Murphy-Harpst Children’s Center. Mailing birthday cards to selected youths at the center was one of our mission projects for the year and another mission project was assembling school kits for UMCOR.
W.O.W. WOMEN OF THE WORD FALL BIBLE STUDIES
WISDOM FOR WIVES We are thrilled to offer you WISDOM FOR WIVES, a study about God’s timeless design for marriage and our role as wives. The principles learned in this newlyrevised study apply to women of all ages and stages of marriage. We will meet on alternating Tuesdays in small groups for discussion followed by a short teaching time and periodic guest speakers. The study will be held on Tuesday mornings beginning September 15, from 9:30 -11:30 a.m. and meet on alternating weeks, ending on February 16. We will meet in Room 258/259. Please contact Pamela Menefee, phmenefee@gmail.com to sign up for the study and/or to make free childcare reservations. Cost for book: $20 (payable on the first day of class). 12 | August 2015
HOSEA, UNFAILING LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING
ME, MYSELF, & LIES: A THOUGHT CLOSET MAKEOVER
We invite you to Jennifer Rothschild’s “Hosea”. The study begins September 9, on Wednesday mornings, from 9:45-11:45 a.m. and lasts for 8 weeks, ending on October 28. The study of Hosea looks deeply at his own life message using his marriage as the sermon illustration. It provides background to better understand the intricacies of the man and his message. You’ll be guided to understand, but more especially to apply the message of the prophet of love. Be amazed by the love of Hosea for his wayward spouse—and more amazed by the unfailing love of God for His wayward people, and for all people. Hosea showers us with hope and forshadowing of the coming of the promised Messiah. Please contact Ami Casper, a.casper9509@ gmail.com to sign up for the study and/or to make free childcare reservations. Cost for book: $15.00. Meets in Room 258/259.
We invite you to Jennifer Rothschild’s “Me, Myself, & Lies: A Thought Closet Makeover”. The study begins September 16, on Wednesday evenings, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and lasts for 7 weeks, ending on October 28. We all talk to ourselves all the time. We evaluate everything we do, compare ourselves to others, and even call ourselves names. We disparage who we are instead of telling ourselves the truth about who God says we are. Me, Myself, & Lies deals with our destructive, unrealistic, self talk. In this study Jennifer Rothschild explores the power of self talk. As she takes us through the things we commonly say to ourselves, she teaches us to practice Godly and Biblical soul talk. Please contact Valerie Scott (scottfour@bellsouth.net) to sign up for the study and/or to make free childcare reservations. Cost for book: $15.00 Classroom: 258/259. www.DunwoodyUMC.org

The 2015 Holiday Festival begins with a Friday Night Preview. Stop by The Pinecone and Holly Berry Café, “A Souper Delicious Event” serving soups from local restaurants. The preview will be open from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Be among the first to check out creations by over 100 Artisans, look through one-of-a-kind Attic Treasures, select a good read in the Book Nook, and pick up some delicious treats in the Gourmet Shop. There will also be delicious prepared entrees to choose from in Casseroles-to-Go. ARTISANS COMMITTEE - Several volunteers will be needed on Friday, November 13 to help with the Artisans arriving at the church to unload and set up their booths between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Please let us know if this is an area in which you would like to work. We would love to have you on our team! Cathy Elliott 770-393-2944 wbefive@aol. com; Marcelle Pinder 770-393-9736 marcellepinder@comcast.net.
