FOLLOWING CHRIST INTO THE FUTURE
By the time you read this article, the school buses are once again running and your vacation is in the rear view mirror. Life will have returned to a certain normalcy, but with the caveat that the new school year always brings some new experiences: new classes, new teachers, meeting new people, etc… The same can be said for us here at Dunwoody UMC. As we step into the month of August, we are returning to our regular routine: the program is gearing up for a new year, Sunday School classes that took a break in July start meeting, the choir returns to traditional worship, and so forth. However, this year also brings some exciting new experiences.
2 | AUGUST 2017
On Sunday, August 6 we begin our new Sunday schedule. It’s worth noting the new schedule encourages families to worship together, provides opportunities for the clergy to visit Sunday School classes, enhances worship and paves the way for many of our future plans. We are in the initial phase of a building program geared specifically at helping worship to be a more meaningful experience for the whole Church. Some of you have seen conceptual drawings, but now the Building Committee has engaged the architectural services of Lyman, Davidson, and Dooley, and preliminary drawings will soon start. You will hear and see more about this in the very near future.
You’ll also see new faces on the staff. People we love have either been appointed elsewhere by the Bishop or decided to start new chapters in their lives. While we miss them, I have every confidence that God is both guiding us and helping us to build an even greater future on the solid foundation that has already been laid. As always, I look forward to seeing you each Sunday (if not before). I hope you will join us as we follow Christ into the new future he has planned for us. Blessings,
Dan

MISSIONS FoodStock 2017
Our friends at Stop Hunger Now are now known as Rise Against Hunger. It’s still the same program and same great people, but with a new name and look that encompasses both food and water. As in past years, we plan to package 300,000 or more meals over the course of five two-hour shifts. In fact, at this year’s event we are on track to package the 2,000,000th meal in our history. The beneficiary of the meals we pack is Convoy of Hope’s (COH). COH’s holistic approach includes interventions that are nutrition-specific (addressing immediate needs), nutrition-sensitive (supporting long-term food security initiatives such as agricultural training and access to clean water), and that build an enabling environment for sustainable development such as micro-enterprise initiatives. Our meals will be shipped to one of their locations in Honduras and will go to feed these children for an entire year. We need many helping hands to reach this year’s goal, celebrate the 2-million mark, and most crucially feed the children in Honduras. Please join us and Simpsonwood UMC on Saturday, August 12, to make this happen. Register yourself, your family and friends for one or more of our shifts at www.foodstock.us.

She has served as a Sunday school teacher and Small Group Leader as well as a volunteer on Wednesday nights in Grace Kids. She also served as Co-Chair and Chair of the Children’s Council and Chair of the 2016 Vision Team, the committee who launched our Spark and Plugged In programs last year. GRACETIME - A UMW CIRCLE FOR YOUNG ADULT WOMEN Love your neighbor takes on a new meaning for the young adult women of GraceTime. Seeking unique and meaningful ways to give back to the community, GraceTime has done everything from hosting a nail salon party for “at risk” little girls to getting crafty with the shut-ins and the elderly. Through hosting impactful service projects, the women of GraceTime have formed bonds with each other that rival those of the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. Let’s hear from the ladies of GraceTime. Mary Batson: I like GraceTime because everyone is very supportive of each other and truly cares about each other’s lives. Whenever we are together we always end up laughing…A LOT.
Kristin Eaton: The annual retreat is my favorite GraceTime event. It’s a time to develop and deepen my relationship with the other ladies and God. GraceTime is the perfect blend of service and fellowship. There’s no better way to spend a Tuesday evening than making Transitional Housing Care packages while sharing our latest news.
Laura Keen: GraceTime is a melting pot for women with different personalities to come together and break down walls to build a humor-filled, faith oriented, deeply rooted community of women. I love that in addition to highlighting ways to share our resources with those in need, we also take time to love ourselves just as God teaches us.
Maryanne Williams: A favorite memory of GraceTime is helping Dewey make a wreath to decorate her door. Her arm was in a sling and I was able to glue the decorations she chose onto the wreath for her. I look forward to GraceTime all month and enjoy the service just as much as the fellowship.
Amber Rowe: One of my favorite memories is stringing beads for Just One Africa. I like GraceTime because of the opportunity for fellowship and service with other young adult women. Follow GraceTime on facebook to s e e w h a t t h e y ’re u p t o n ex t ! www.facebook.com.DUMCYA.
