Connections Fall 2018
Missions Make a Difference All Year Long Summer brought hundreds of church members and community friends together to serve in our community and beyond. See page 7
GREAT DAY OF SERVICE Saturday, Oct. 20, is Dunwoody UMC’s 30th annual Great Day of Service. This community service project www.dunwoodyumc.org involves more than 725 volunteers in 25+ different projects at the church and in the community.
Something Old and Something New
One of my favorite passages of scripture is found in the 13th chapter of Matthew. Jesus tells a whole series of parables. As you come to the end of the chapter, he tells one more. He says, “Therefore, every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.” (Matthew 13:52)
Every time I read that passage I picture an ancient scribe with a long beard, headdress and robe sitting in a chair next to a treasure chest. He opens the top and looks inside. For a moment he smiles, and then he reaches in and begins to pull out some of the things it contains. It is not surprising to me that he pulls out some things that are old. Everyone I know has a treasure chest of sorts. Maybe it is a cardboard box in the basement or a drawer that is rarely used, but inside are treasures of one kind or another, like high school yearbooks, an old family picture with special meaning to you or a gift given by a friend years earlier. What is surprising to me is that the scribe pulled something new out of the treasure chest. You don’t typically think of looking in your treasure chest and seeing something you have never seen before. Yet, says Jesus, our treasures come not just from the past but also from stepping into the future. As a church, we are in the process of pulling out of the treasure chest of the kingdom those things that are both old and new. Take, for example, this edition of Connections. We have made a few changes. In one sense, it is still full of important information. At the same time, we are publishing it quarterly instead of monthly, and we have included stories to help you get to know your church a little better. For the announcements, we are using e-Connections, emailed every Friday, and the Sunday worship bulletin. The biggest place we are pulling something old and something new out of the treasure chest is the Sanctuary renovation. By the time you read this edition of Connections, we will be approximately half way through the building project. The Sanctuary will have much of the same look and will still be beautiful, but it will also include changes that will enhance both our Traditional and Contemporary services. It will be a few more weeks before we will have a chance to get a full view of this, but the day will be here before we know it. Similarly, the Chapel Service has found a new home in an old location. Change can be challenging, but it can also be a time when we discover treasures we didn’t even realize were sitting in our chest. Let’s enjoy each one of them.
Yours in Christ,
Rev. Dan Brown Senior Pastor
Write an Advent Devotion
Advent starts the fourth Sunday prior to Christmas day, which is Sunday, Dec. 2, and is a time to prepare our hearts for the coming of the King. Dunwoody UMC has many Advent traditions, including the annual Advent Devotional Guide featuring short daily devotions, scripture and prayer. Written by members, clergy and staff, this collection of short stories, memories or simple thoughts is a great way to experience the true meaning of Christmas and to strengthen your faith. Some members give them to people in our community as a way of outreach and missions to help spread God’s love and His word in this joyous season. Devotions are due Monday, Oct. 29. Contact Anne West at awwest@mindspring.com with questions or to receive a sample.

Welcoming and Assimilation
Radical Hospitality Information Sessions
Radical Hospitality
At the outset of 2018 the concept of “Radical Hospitality” was introduced at Dunwoody UMC. What does that mean? Beyond being friendly, it means striving to consistently exceed guests’ expectations of welcome and inclusion. The three pillars to achieve this are: Notice. Take the time to notice all those around you, not just who you already know. Offer a warm greeting to each guest in our midst, starting with the person in front of you. Personal Attention. Introduce yourself and learn guests’ names. Anticipate and fulfill the guests’ needs. Facilitate introductions with members you know.

Guests tell us we do a good job of greeting and welcoming, but we want to move to the next level of hospitality. It takes the whole congregation’s effort to be known as the church with exceptional hospitality in the Dunwoody area. You’re invited to learn more at an upcoming information session led by Rev. David Melton. To register, contact Mary Celeste Llaurador at maryceleste.llaurador@ dunwoodyumc.org or 770-394-0657, ext. 122.
