CHILDREN’S SABBATH OCTOBER 20, 2019 8:45 a.m. 11:05 a.m.

A Dynamic Christian Community of Fully Devoted Followers of Jesus Christ 1548 Mt. Vernon Road | Dunwoody, GA | www.dunwoodyumc.org

A Children’s Sabbath In the 19th chapter of Matthew, there is a penetrating scene. Jesus had been engaged in a debate on family values, when all of a sudden some parents showed up with their children in the hope that Jesus might pray for them and bless them. The Disciples, thinking that Jesus was too busy, began to turn the children away. However, when Jesus saw it, He responded, “Let the little children come to me and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” Then we’re told that before He left He took the time to lay His hands on them and bless them. (Vs. 13 –15) Children matter to Jesus and they matter to the Church. Today, we are celebrating Children’s Sabbath. What is Children’s Sabbath? The Children’s Sabbath got its start from the Children’s Defense Fund. It is a time to reflect on God’s gift of children and the ways we, as a congregation and as individuals, can act to care for, protect and advocate for children. Often there is a tendency to think of childhood as a carefree time, full of happiness and joy. Many of us whose children have long since entered into adulthood may think back on our own childhoods and nostalgically remember times free from responsibility, spent with family and friends and full of fun. However, the reality today is that many children suffer, worry and have needs that are often overlooked. The Children’s Sabbath invites us to set aside some time to think about how we can make a difference. For example, one of the ways we can make a difference here at DUMC is to volunteer for Children’s Ministries at special events like the Holiday Festival or the Christmas Concert. Think of it this way, when a parent volunteers for Children’s Ministries at special events, their time is split. Part of their time is spent trying to help run the ministry, and part of their time is spent trying to help their own children navigate the activity. When those of us who do not have young children volunteer, the children can receive our full attention. Try to think back to what it meant to you to get an adult’s full attention. Think what it would mean to the children today. As a way of calling attention to the needs of children, we have invited the children of this church to participate in various aspects of the worship service today. We have invited them to serve as ushers and greeters, in addition to reading Scripture, leading in prayer and other important roles. As you encounter these young people, I hope you will take the time to encourage them and let them know you are behind them. Blessings,

Rev. Dan Brown PS: On whole different note, I want to thank all of those who participated in this year’s Great Day of Service. You made a difference!

WORSHIP

Encounters Sermon Series In the pages of the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) we see Jesus encounter a variety of different people. There was blind Bartimaeus, a wedding party, a tax collector, a man who lived in a cemetery, a woman in a crowd and a paralyzed man at a pool. These encounters became occasions of instruction, insight and inspiration. Join us as we encounter Jesus through the encounters He had with others. Oct. 27

The Man at the Pool, John 5:2–16

All Saints Sunday Service featuring Duruflé’s Requiem Sunday, Nov. 3, 11:00 a.m. Traditional Service. All Saints Sunday is a service with memorable music to honor the saints who have passed away within the last year. This year, the choir will sing Requiem by Maurice Duruflé, one of the greatest pieces of choral literature of the 20th century. The organ accompaniment will be equally lovely—a true duet between choir and organ. With our new, world-class organ, we look forward to bringing these nuanced expressions of grief, hope and faith to life.

PRIMROSE SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION

Construction Update and Landscape Plan Approval No doubt you have noticed as you are driving into the Dunwoody UMC parking lot, that our neighbor The Primrose School, is in the process of expanding their facility. They expected construction to be completed by now but there have been a series of delays. Before they began the expansion, school management shared their plans not only for the building, but the landscape plan to replace their trees that they removed by our parking lot. They have continued to keep us informed as the construction progresses. The landscape plan for the area between the school and our parking lot was submitted to the City of Dunwoody and approved. There will be extensive planting of new trees and a variety of shrubs and bushes. The plan has been reviewed by the Board of Trustees. Once construction is over and the landscaping plan is completed, the area along the edge of our parking lot will be visually appealing and create a nice buffer between DUMC and The Primrose School.
