A Dynamic Christian Community of Fully Devoted Followers of Jesus Christ 1548 Mt. Vernon Road | Dunwoody, GA | www.dunwoodyumc.org

Serving a Church that Serves Others! During one of the worship services last Sunday, I mentioned that there is a lot going on in our church right now. To begin, by the time you read this article, the 153rd session of the North Georgia Annual Conference will have come to a close. Rev. Kathy Brockman will have been ordained, a new member of our staff, Calissa Dauterman, will have been commissioned, the rest of the clergy will have all been reappointed to DUMC for another year and the delegates to next year’s General Conference will have been elected. I particularly want to offer words of thanks to all of the lay delegates who spent a week of their time in service to you by representing our church at Annual Conference. This next week, our Children’s Ministries will be holding their annual Vacation Bible School program (4 years – rising 3rd graders). This year the theme is, “To Mars and Beyond,” and will focus on helping our young people discover the wonders of God’s universe. They will become voyagers on a journey through space and exploring where God’s power can take them. They will learn how God walked with the heroes of the Bible and that He is always with them. At the same time, God Squad (4th – 6th graders) will be discovering the wonders of God’s love through missions. Each day, the students will have the opportunity to volunteer with a different service agency, (including the CAC, Hightower Homework Club and Garden Isaiah). Each project is an opportunity to learn how our actions can spread the love of God to our community. Beginning Sunday, June 23, our middle schoolers will be going on a week-long mission trip to Mountain Top where they will be engaging in a service project in Eastern Tennessee just north of Chattanooga. While in Appalachia, they will be repairing homes, providing day care and involved in day camps. Finally, we will end the month of June with our Chancel Choir presenting a patriotic concert on Sunday, June 30 at 4:00 p.m. entitled, “Red, White and Bernstein.” In remembrance of the 100th birthday of the late Leonard Bernstein, the choir will be performing many of the well-known pieces of this famous American composer. Of course, they will also be including such favorites as the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and “A Salute to the Armed Forces.” You won’t want to miss it. So, as I say there is a lot going on in our church right now. What a joy it is to me personally to be your pastor and to have the privilege of serving a church that believes in serving others. Yours in Christ,

Rev. Dan Brown

Prayer of Thanksgiving

God of all blessings, source of all life, giver of all grace in all things, thank you for the gift of life, for the breath that sustains life, for the food of this earth that nurtures life, and for the love of family and friends without which there would be little happiness in life. Thank you for the beauty of creation of this great Earth, for the joy that the ear may hear, for the unknown that we cannot behold filling the universe with wonder, and for the expanse of space that draws us beyond the definitions of our selves. Everything in life, and the life that surrounds us was drawn and created by Your own hand. For this, we are grateful. Amen.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I Knew My Father Knew DeFord Lauren Heidingsfelder, mezzo-soprano I watched him with the eager eyes of childhood day by day. The way he lived said more to me than words could ever say, The simple truths he taught me would endure my whole life through, And long before I knew them myself, I knew my father knew. I borrowed his unfailing faith, I trusted in his love, I counted on his courage when my own was not enough, I turned to him for counsel through the perils of my youth, And even when I doubted, still I knew, I knew my father knew. I saw his quiet witness in the tears he could not hide As he taught me of the Savior, how He lived and how He died, I felt the Holy Spirit as he testified of truth, And I began to understand the things I knew my father knew, I have found my father’s faith deep within my soul, A legacy I’ll treasure through eternities untold, And ev’ry thing I try to be, and ev’rything I do, I do because I learned to know and love the things I knew my father knew. 4
