opportunities for dunwoody methodists to connect
WORDS FROM WILEY Have you made your resolutions for the New Year yet? You know, those things you resolved to change or enforce in your life for the coming year. If you have, the next question is how many have you already broken? And how many on your list are reruns year after year? Well for 2011, I resolve to make a new resolution every day. I have a better chance of keeping it and, furthermore, it makes it a lot more flexible to deal with what I must deal with. For truly the twelve step programs such as AA are right, we live one day at a time.
Moe Cervenka
Bill and Susan Donges
So for 2011, I am going to start the day, or maybe the last thing before I turn in for the night, by writing on a sticky note one thing I resolved to change or redirect in my life for that day. I may have to repeat these steps for several days, but hopefully it will catch on as a habit at some point, and I can move on to a new resolution. Also when life throws me a curve, I can start dealing with it right away and not wait for 2012. Someday I am going to share my resolution with others so that they can help to hold me accountable. Of course I will be cautious with whom I entrust what I am working on in my life. A little push from another can help one keep on track.
Just like college courses with the same title, the Dunwoody UMC 101 classes are an introduction to our church and our United Methodist denomination. Your clergy staff answers your questions about what we do, why we do it, what we believe, and how to get involved. We intend the classes to be for new and prospective members, but if you’re a long time member, you are welcome to come and brush up on your basics. Rev. Zack Martin will be teaching the next series of classes on Sundays, January 9, 16, and 23 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the twenty30somethings suite. Please do not hesitate to contact us at 770-394-0675 with any questions you may have.
At the end of the day if I have failed at what I have resolved, I am going to forgive myself, but, I can start over with the new day and perhaps get it right on the second try. This new system doesn’t mean I will not tackle what I can get done in a day. For some resolutions I will break it into daily steps, and in others I will just stick with it as long as it takes. I will not fall for the temptation just to deal with the “minor” but I won’t hesitate to make minor changes for the better where I can. This will be the first year I have tried this new method, but I think by the end of 2011 I will have gained more ground in living than trying to project the whole year at the first of the year. I will not give up as quickly when I fail; I will resolve to try again. May God bless you in 2011 and may you find the will and way to make the changes you need to make. May God bless you,

DUMC 101: Introduction to Dunwoody UMC Classes
I am going to look at each day with its resolution as a gift from God. Indeed, as the Psalmist wrote, “This is the day the Lord has made, let’s rejoice and be glad in it.” Jesus told us in the Sermon on the Mount, “Worry about today, and let tomorrow take care of itself.” See the new day with the spirit, not of that I have to do this, but that I am blessed because I can do this. This makes what could be a burden into a joy.

Blessed to Be a Blessing Lifting Up the Next Generation Children’s Sabbath February 20, 2011
Children’s Sabbath is an interfaith event that seeks to inspire congregations to help children through prayer, service and advocacy. The United Methodist Church and more than 200 other denominations and religious organizations support it. Children’s Sabbath gives churches a chance to look at the real needs of children in the pews and outside the church walls and it invites advocacy on their behalf. This year’s Children’s Sabbath Observance calls participants to end poverty in the United States and help keep the welfare of our children the top priority of this nation. Our congregation’s participation is an important part of creating a persistent, faithful voice for justice. On Sunday, February 20th, as we focus on the children of our congregation and celebrate their presence in our lives, we also remember the children in our city, our country and around the world who are less fortunate than ours. This Children’s Sabbath calls us to remember that we are blessed to be a blessing to others. Join us at either worship service as we pray, celebrate and lift up the next generation of God’s children.

Senior Adult Ministry On Friday, January 21, 2011, the Pryme Tymers will tour the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Ga. The 120,000 square foot Museum opened in August 2003 with galleries featuring contemporary Western American art. Go to www. boothmuseum.org for detailed information on their exhibits. Because their exhibits are rotated and new works are also being added, there is always something new to see. Come and join others for the General Board of Global Ministries mission study on Sunday, February 27th from 3:30 5:30pm in the Asbury Room. “Joy to the World” is a shout of celebration, penned by the great hymn writer Isaac Watts in 1819. Although it is a beloved Christmas carol, its message does not stop with Christmas Day. Its deeper message is not about the birth of a baby, but about the fundamental changes brought into the world by the coming of Jesus Christ. The title of this mission study reflects the conviction that for United Methodists, mission and evangelism flow from joyous gratitude for the Good News of Jesus Christ. This study will be led by Deaconess Jo (Elna) Sheetz.

The web site describes a current special exhibit, “Ansel Adams: A Legacy” which showcases more than 100 photographs by famed black and white landscape photographer and environmentalist, Ansel Adams. America’s wild beauty has been forever captured with his timeless and visually stunning works.

the Dazzlin’ Dames
After dinner, the Dazzlin’ Dames will show us how remarkable talent and energy have no age limit. These super- charged dames have all participated in the Ms. Senior Georgia Pageant. Their high-energy stage show is an exciting combination of comedy, song and dance.
LIVING LONGER, LIVING STRONGER
The professionally-delivered Vaudeville style showcase of well-known tunes belies the fact that every performer has passed her 60th birthday and many have celebrated their 80th. The performers come from all walks of life and have “show biz” as a common bond. Cost for the dinner and show is $17. The last day for payment is Sunday, noon, February 6. The Atlanta Day Shelter and Atlanta Urban Ministries were the recipients.
Rev. Zack and 15 volunteers from the twenty30somethings served lunch at the Sandy Springs Feed ‘n Seed in December. Over 75 needy people from the Sandy Springs community were served a hot lunch through this ministry at Sandy Springs UMC. Holiday Festival Kudos And what a day it was! “Happy” was the adjective most heard ….. The artisans were happy, the volunteers were happy, our guests were happy. “DUMC is such a happy place.” was often heard. AND, it was a record-breaking day both in attendance and money raised. Over $80,000 was cleared and money is still coming. Our 18th Habitat for Humanity home is assured……and rumor has it, maybe more. Kudos to all who volunteered for and/ or attended the Festival and the events preceding it. Attendance was great. Counting the children who were outside and our volunteers, we had approximately 5000 people. The crew from FISH radio station 104.7 was here broadcasting. We had over 600 volunteers who contributed approximately 2400 hours of their time just during Festival week. Even Mr. & Mrs. Santa volunteered their time! The total number of volunteers and hours contributed is incalculable. Festival preparation begins as the previous Festival ends! Virtually every part of the Festival requires a great deal of planning and preparation. Volunteers made casseroles for Casseroles-to-Go or scrumptious goodies for the Gourmet Shop. Others contributed recipes or assembled Gifts-in-a-Jar. Some of you enjoyed our Spirit nights or participated in Shred Day. Others ate out often during Dine to Donate in November. There were many ways to participate; so many of you out did yourselves with your involvement. For the first time, our children were included in Habitat activities in Sunday School, Wednesday Worship and Praise and/or Club 45; they’re acknowledged on the Hard Hats and Hammers banner. 10 | January 2011
Monies raised by our Children’s Ministry will buy enough shingles to roof the entire home! As in previous years, the 180° youth sponsored Kidz’ Zone, the Holiday Festival activity area for younger children. Over 50 youth and adults volunteered just in Kidz’ Zone that day. Another approximately 600 kids and adults attended. Kidz’ Zone alone raised more than enough money to pay for the electrical system for the entire house!
Holiday Festival factoids: • 13 cakes were made by one member and brought in $390. (That’s good for doorknobs indoors and out!) • 239 volunteers made 654 casseroles; two contributors made 16 each. (That’s $272 each raised.) • Another member bought 19 casseroles. • 278 Gifts-in-a-Jar were made, mostly at the Great Day of Service. • Silent Auction had over 530 items donated, the biggest ticket items being vacation homes, one bringing in close to $1000. • 51 cakes were made by another member resulting in $765 -- That’s paint for an entire house, plus a bathtub to boot! Follow us on:
• 260 contributors made well over 300 items for the Gourmet Shop. • Approximately 500 books were contributed. • Among other things, Attic Treasures sold a piano, 5 sofas, 6 dining room tables/sets, 4 bedroom suites and even an antique Mexican parrot cage. This is just one part of the story. Not only will a deserving family receive a wonderful new home in the spring, but the sense of fellowship and coming together for such an incredible event was a priceless gift to us all. Thank you!

Are you trying to find something that’s the right size and will fit perfectly? Well, look no further! God has a plan for marriage: it is a precious gift that’s not to be taken lightly. We invite couples to join us for 6-8 weeks of marriage “advice”, given by the Ultimate Marriage Counselor through His servant Gary Smalley, beginning Sunday night February 13, 2011 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Taught by couples for couples...join us as we seek to understand the realities of marriage, our mate, ourselves, our families and all our relationships as we discover “The Keys to Loving Relationships” with Gary Smalley’s DVD Series. If you’ve seen Gary, before he is funny and entertaining as he shares with us his life examples/experiences on his journey through the relationships we experience in life. Find out how to get the gift that keeps on giving as our Lord and Savior created for us! Look for further details in the Bulletin and on the church website. GLORIA GAITHER’s theme that frames the canvas of her life is “day by day, hour by hour, moment by moment”. It is a life lived out of a sincere belief that being available to the wonder of each day’s unexpected twists and turns is a gift from God to be responded to with tenacity, joy and excellence. Gloria, with her husband, soulmate and writing partner, Bill Gaither, has written over 700 songs and hundreds of recordings. Gloria has written over 40 books, including titles for adults and children, and her speaking spans a wide range including devotional encouragement for women.
GLORIA GAITHER
AMY GAITHER HAYES, speaker, vocal artist, actress, dancer, stage director, writer, teacher or storyteller, is driven by the notion that art aimed at the heart can transfigure the souls of men and women. The “natural”, the “infinite” and the “yes” are three words that inspire the work of Amy, a multi-dimensional communicator. While the artist feels the daily pull of the footlights, her primary “audience” these days consists of her children, Lee, Madeline and Simon.
The Music Ministry of DUMC presented “The Promise”... The Story of Christmas on December 5 to a full house! Children, Youth, Women, bells, tone-chimes, Musica Gloria and Wandering Shepherds joined Robert Edwards in presenting the Christmas story in narration and song. Hundreds of singers and musicians united to “kick-off” the season for our community.

Library News January: The Faith Club: A Muslim, A Christian, A Jew— Three Women Search for Understanding by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver, and Priscilla Warner. Three mothers from three faiths: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism got together to write a picture book for their children that would highlight the connections between their religions. They realized that, before they could talk about what united them, they had to confront what divided them in matters of faith, God, and religion. Somewhere along the way, their moments of conflict, frustration, and anger gave way to new understanding and great respect. This is one of the upcoming PALS selections to be held here at DUMC. Read the book to see if you’d like to consider joining the discussion. . February: For the Love of God: The Epistles of John by Justo L. and Catherine Gunsalus Gonzalez. Justo L. González is a Cuban-American Methodist historian, theologian, and prolific author. Sponsored by the GBGM, the UMW Bible Study for 2010 to be led by Rev. Stephens will be held in the Asbury Room for three consecutive weeks. John Wesley apparently found in a letter the simplicity of language that he sought in the sermons of preachers as well as the sum of the whole Gospel: “We Love Him, because He first Loved Us.” Don’t forget: A Spiritual Growth study, this will count toward the UMW Reading Program. You’ll want to read this book donated by the UMW in honor of Peggy Browne for completing the UMW Reading Program, Level II. www.DunwoodyUMC.org

Someone You Know Is Hurting.
Family.Friends. Neighbors. Coworkers.
On Friday, January 14 the Dunwoody Men will meet to be inspired by an individual who has, with God’s help, overcome adversity and despair, Mr. Scott Rigsby. When he was 18, a truck he was riding in was suddenly hit by a passing 18wheeler, throwing him underneath a 3-ton attached trailer and dragging him 300 feet. His back suffered third degree burns, his right leg was severed off and his left leg hung barely intact. His life was seemingly over, or so it seemed for Scott Rigsby. In 2005 Scott decided to change his life, and the world, by breaking down barriers for physically challenged athletes. He is on a mission fueled by a simple prayer that if God would open doors for him, then he would go through them. Sounds rather trivial until you hear his story of tragedy and one young man’s struggle to simply carry on.
It’s hard to know how to help someone who is going through a divorce. It takes a long time and a lot of work to heal the pain that comes with the breakup of a marriage.
When Christians Get it Wrong
