CONNECTIONS

AN OPEN DOOR on your list? To lose some weight? To exercise more? To get out of debt? To become more organized? To simplify life? To be less critical and more loving? Something else? Stepping through the threshold of a brand new year is a reminder that life is not static; that it does not have to remain the same; and that we can all change.

2017

It is hard to believe it, but by the time you read this article, we will have stepped through the threshold of a brand new year. The door of 2016 will have already closed and we will only be able to see 2016 through the window of 2017. Still, New Year’s is a time for many things. It is a time for new beginnings. Many of you will have no doubt already made New Year’s resolutions. What is

It is also a good time to pause a moment and reflect on the past. What was last year like for you? Was it a joyous time? Did you get married, give birth to a baby, or get a promotion at work? Was it a painful time? Did you face some serious illness, or have a loved one die, or experience a broken relationship of one kind or another? Did you experience a little bit of both? We all have histories and the person we become is tied to the past out of which we have lived. One of the things we hope to do here at DUMC is to use the New Year as a time to help us learn how to build bridges. Starting January 8, we will begin a series of sermons entitled, “Building Bridges in a Broken World.” We will be looking at such themes as… Building Bridges to Your Past, Building

Bridges with Your Enemies, Building Bridges with People Who Are Hurting, Building Bridges with People Who Have Hurt You, and Building Bridges with the World. Something else that will be taking place right after we enter the New Year will be our Committee of 100. This year, the focus of our Committee of 100 will be on Communications and Worship. We expect it will be a time of deep reflection, lively conversation, and new possibilities for the future of the church. I am excited about the New Year. I believe it is going to be a great year and I look forward to sharing it with you. Your Pastor,

Dan Brown

FAMILY LIVING AND GIVING Family Living and Giving is composed of women who are experiencing empty nests, retiring from careers, enjoying grandchildren, caring for aging parents, and supporting women who have already experienced those life-changing events. This active circle participates in many service projects within DUMC and in the community at large. We are especially interested in missions in the community. Four times a year we visit the Women’s Community Kitchen at Grace Church. We take and serve lunch to the large group that congregates there. We also take tennis shoes, toiletries, and clothing to be given to anyone who needs those items. We seek to support the mission focus of Dunwoody United Methodist Women. At this time the focus is on preventing human trafficking. We plan to support Well Spring Living in some special way this spring. Another project is adopting a family in need at Christmas, providing gifts for each member. We meet at 11 a.m. in the church Parlor on the second Monday of each month. After a short business meeting and a program, the group enjoys an informal “brown bag” lunch and social time.

IS COMING

TO DUMC!

GriefShare is a special weekly seminar and support group designed to help you rebuild your life after losing a loved one. Our group is led by caring people who have experienced grief and want to help you through the difficult days ahead. We know it hurts, and we want to help. We will have meetings on the second and fourth Sundays from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. beginning January 8, 2017.

On March 19th at 7PM in the Sacturary, Dunwoody UMC Chancel Choir and the Atlanta Boy Choir will be presenting the U.S. premiere of The Farthest Shore, a new oratorio for choir, brass quintet, and organ. Based on Celtic legend, a stranger is cast upon an unforgiving shore during a terrible storm, and proceeds to weave a spell over the inhabitants of a small village in a dramatic tale that entwines reality, morality and faith in the quest for ultimate personal truth. Written by the world-renowned composer Paul Mealor, The Farthest Shore was originally debuted in London in May of 2013 by the BBC Singers. Paul Mealor has been described as ‘the most important composer to have emerged in Welsh choral music since William Mathias‘ (New York Times, 2001) and his music is ‘marked by something outside of himself that is beautifully spatial and evocative of landscape… it illuminates both our past and our future‘ (The Guardian, 2011). Since January 2003, Mealor has taught in the Music Department at the University of Aberdeen where he is Professor of Composition, but he was catapulted to international stardom in April 2011, when 2.5 billion people (the largest audience in broadcasting history) heard his Motet, Ubi caritas performed by the choirs of Westminster Abbey and Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal, conducted by James O’Donnell at the Royal Wedding Ceremony of His Royal Highness Prince William and Catherine Middleton (now The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge) at Westminster Abbey. It has since topped the Classical singles charts in the USA, UK, Australia, France and New Zealand. In July 2011, Mealor signed to Decca Records and by November of that year, his first album through his new record label, A Tender Light reached the top of the UK Classical Charts where it stayed for six weeks. He broke records that year by being the first classical composer to hold both the classical and pop chart number-one spots at the same time, with his piece for The Military Wives Choir and Gareth Malone, Wherever You Are, which entered the UK Pop Singles Chart at number one and also was nominated for Best British Single in the 2012 BRIT Awards.
