CONNECTIONS

JANUARY 2016

OPPORTUNITIES FOR DUNWOODY METHODISTS TO CONNECT

NEW YEARS AND NEW BEGINNINGS! does not own a bible and wants one, he or she will have only to go to the Welcome Station and request a bible and it will be given. Our hope and our prayer is that all of us will become more familiar with the Bible… and more importantly Jesus, the Christ to whom the Bible points.

As we step through the threshold of a brand new year, I am filled with a sense of anticipation about what lies before us in 2016. In so many ways, the beginning of the New Year is a time for new beginnings here at Dunwoody United Methodist Church. First of all, let me tell you about a couple of new additions you will notice on Sunday mornings. Through a very generous gift, there will be new Pew Bibles in the Sanctuary. These Pew Bibles are in the Common English Version of the Bible. This is a recent translation, more literarily accurate, the one being encouraged by the United Methodist Church, and the one that we have started giving to our children.

When the Committee of 100 meets during the second weekend of January, we will be exploring the vision Christ has for Dunwoody United Methodist Church. DUMC has a rich and wonderful heritage, but God is calling us into the future. Over the last 18 months I have tried to listen very carefully to what the members of this Church have shared about what they value in the Church, and what their hopes and dreams are for the future. I have also spent a tremendous amount of time prayerfully listening to where Christ is calling us to go in the days ahead. I will be sharing

that with the Committee of 100 and we will be looking at some of the challenges and implications of that for our Church. Later, at our Church Council meeting on January 25, the Strategic Planning Task Force will be sharing specific strategies that have emerged out of discussions that have taken place in both the 2015 and 2016 Committees of 100 and a year of meeting together. Finally, I hope you will make every effort to be with us for the sermon series, “Why Christ? Finding Hope in a Skeptical Age!” It begins on January 3. Plan to be with us. You will be glad you did! Blessings,

Rev. Dan Brown

Also, through another generous gift to the Church, we will have bibles to give away to anyone who does not have a bible. If someone comes to the Church,

SUNDAY SCHOOL IN JANUARY & FEBRUARY The Young Adult Sunday School will be offering two studies in January and February. The first study is “Ask: Faith Questions in a Skeptical Age.” This study will be looking at series of questions: • • • • • • • •

PLANNING MEETING Calling all Young Adults - We will have our annual planning meeting on Sunday, January 10 from 11:30 12:45 in the Young Adult Suite. Lunch will be provided for $5. We ask that you think about how to enhance and expand our ministry for 2016. RSVP to Rev. Ashley Jenkins so she has an accurate headcount for lunch at ashley.jenkins@dunwoodyumc.org.

Can only one religion be true? Why is there suffering and evil? How can I believe in science and creation? How can I believe in a God I can’t prove? Can I trust the Old Testament? Are marriage and family life religious issues? Was Jesus’ resurrection real? Why do Christians disagree about so many things?

The message is strong and clear: Don’t let your questions stop you from accepting God’s invitation to faith. Engage your doubt, and you may find you are closer to God on the other side. In February, the Young Adults will studying “Hard to Dance with the Devil on Your Back.” It is a Lenten study that looks at the transcendent struggle in the lives of believers, while helping us to enter the continually crumbling world surrounding Jesus and the disciples in the days preceding Easter.

CREATION CARE RECYCLING TIP: ALUMINUM CANS As part of Dunwoody UMC’s GREEN efforts, we ask that you recycle your empty soda can when in the building. DID YOU KNOW? Aluminum takes 200-500 years to fully degrade in a landfill. Recycling aluminum takes 95% less energy than making aluminum from raw materials. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours. 6 | January 2016

MISSIONS

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY The building of our 26th Habitat for Humanity house is scheduled to being on April 16 and end April 23. The build will take place over 7 consecutive days and we need your assistance to make this happen. For the first time ever, Dunwoody UMC is participating in a Blitz Build. One of our goals is to engage more volunteers to become the hearts, hands and voices for the cause of adequate and affordable housing. Organizing a blitz build like this is one way that we attract more people. Yes, it takes us outside our routine. Yes, it requires extra effort. And yes, it takes strong leadership, hard work and careful planning. The impact, however, reaches far beyond the Habitat families who purchase the homes that result from the blitz. Please consider sharing your time…asking your co-workers to join you and take a day off work to complete our first ever Blitz Build. There is a job for everyone – no skills required!! You must be 16 years of age to participate. Contact Jack Whitley at jwhitley47@ aol.com, or Samantha Faklaris at Samantha.faklaris@dunwoodyumc.org for more information.

2016 INTERNATIONAL MISSION TRIP INFORMATION SESSION Dunwoody UMC sends members on global mission trips each year. We give love to children, create self-sustaining projects and share the love of Christ. Each year promises to bring even more opportunities and meaningful mission trips to our church. Great things happen when we listen to God’s call and have a heart to serve. Whether you are contemplating a mission trip for the first time, or are a veteran trip participant, we know we can all make a difference www.DunwoodyUMC.org

together. Make missions your next step to experiencing God in a whole new way. Join us for our 2016 information session on Monday, February 8 at 7 p.m. in the Wesley Room. Care Ministry with donations. If you are interested in assisting our foster families with babysitting, it’s a simple process to become approved. They would be thankful for an hour or two here and there to run an errand! AND/ OR if you are interested in becoming a foster parent too, please contact Rosemary Watts at wrosemary@ hotmail.com or Samantha Faklaris at Samantha.faklaris@dunwoodyumc. org to receive more info on our next orientation session.

ATLANTA COMMUNITY FOOD BANK The Atlanta Community Food Bank is one of the many charitable organizations to which members of Dunwoody UMC lend a helping hand. Led by longtime DUMC member John Hewitt, we have been sorting and packing food once a month for over 20 years. The ACFB receives donations from retailers such as Publix, Kroger, Walmart and CVS and, after sorting these bulk gifts into manageable quantities of cans/boxes, beverages, health and beauty items, etc. redistributes them to local food kitchens and pantries to get them directly to those in need. Taking the bulk donations and sorting them is where we come in - it’s fun work and they even provide a snack! We go to the ACFB once a month on the second Wednesday, meeting at 8:30 a.m. under the Wiley and Linda Stephens portico, or if it’s cold, just inside the church. Transportation is provided and we get back to the church by 12:30 pm. Please come and join in! Questions, contact Alan Shinn, 770-849-0719, or awshinn@comcast.net. For more information on the ACFB, their website is www.acfb.org.

WOMEN’S MINISTRIES WOMEN OF GRACE DINNER February 29, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, come for food and fellowship with our special guest speaker, Kimberly Kennedy. Kimberly is known for her perfect balance of professionalism, warmth, wit, and engaging personality. Emmy award-winning journalist and television personality, her presence on any program instantly takes that event to a whole new level. She is author of the book “Left at the Altar: My Story of Hope and Healing for Every Woman who has Felt the Heartbreak of Rejection.” This is not a story of a woman and her man--it is a story of a woman and her God. Table sales for WOG dinner will begin on February 3, 2016 at $15 per person. We welcome all women to come and enjoy this very special evening.

W.O.W. BIBLE STUDIES HOSEA, UNFAILING LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING We invite you to Jennifer Rothschild’s “Hosea, Unfailing Love Changes Everything”. Beginning January 6, on Wednesday evenings, except Ash Wednesday, 7:00-9:00 p.m. for 7 weeks ending on February 24. Hosea, an old-testament prophet, preached his own life message using his marriage as the sermon illustration. The study of Hosea looks deeply at that message. It provides background to better understand the intricacies of the man and his message. You’ll be guided to understand, but more especially to apply the message of the prophet of love. The book will challenge us with judgment so harsh it will singe our hair — an unheeded sermon warning of devastating doom shortly to come. But it will show us the kind of love we dream about. Be amazed by the love of Hosea for his wayward spouse — and more amazed by the unfailing love of God for His wayward people, and for all people. Hosea showers us with hope — hints and portents pointing to the coming of the promised Messiah. Please contact Sally Abele, sallyabele@msn.com to sign up for the study and/or to make free childcare reservations. Cost for book: $15.00 Classroom: Francis Asbury Room B. THE EMPTY NEST: BARBARA & SUSAN’S GUIDE TO DISCOVERING NEW PURPOSE, PASSION & YOUR NEXT GREAT ADVENTURE We invite you to Barbara & Susan’s Guide to the Empty Nest: Discovering New Purpose, Passion & Your Next Great Adventure. The study begins March 2, on Wednesday evenings, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and lasts for 6 weeks. You’re done . . . but you’re not finished! And one more thing. You’re not alone. Feeling unsure? Scared? Expectant? Maybe even giddy? Is your nest empty--except for a bundle of mixed emotions? As you grieve what’s behind and daydream about possibilities, you’ll feel young again, ready for new challenges and adventures. Yet you may not know what to pursue or how to discover what’s next. Many women in this season of life wonder: Who am I now? And what should I do? How will my marriage be affected? Does anyone need me? How do I relate to my children? Is it okay to feel sad? Or thrilled? What’s next? Barbara and Susan can be the friends you need to walk you through these new experiences. They’ll guide you to answers, and together you’ll discover a new purpose and passion for your next life adventure. Please contact Sally Abele (sallyabele@msn.com) to sign up for the study and/or to make free childcare reservations. Cost for book: $10.00 Classroom: 258/259

JAMES: MERCY TRIUMPHS We invite you to Beth Moore’s “James”. The study begins February 3, on Wednesday mornings, from 9:45-11:45 a.m. and lasts for 8 weeks, ending on March 30 (No class on February 17). Bible scholars compare James to the prophet Amos. In other ways James more closely resembles the Book of Proverbs than any New Testament book. Come along with Beth Moore on a journey to get to know both the man and the Book of James. You will never be the same again. Topics in this study include: joy, hardship, faith, reversal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-mindedness, the dangers of the tongue, humility, and prayer. Please contact Ami Casper, a.casper9509@gmail.com to sign up for the study and/or to make free childcare reservations.
