JUNE-JULY 2015
CONNECTIONS OPPORTUNITIES FOR DUNWOODY METHODISTS TO CONNECT
A FEW THOUGHTS In just a couple of weeks, I will be completing my first year as the New Senior Minister of Dunwoody UMC. That, of course, means I will be losing the right to rely on that when I don’t know the answer to something. Up to now, if a staff member or a member of the church came to me with a question and I didn’t know the answer, I would just reply, “I’m still new, so I don’t know.” The other day, one of the clergy reminded me, “After your first year, no more.” Joking aside, it has been a great year. I came into this first year cautiously optimistic. I mean, “How do you follow a legend?” However, Wiley and Linda did such a wonderful job preparing the way; the congregation did such a wonderful job receiving us and making us feel welcome; and the clergy and staff did such a wonderful job helping me to transition, it has gone as well as I think any transition of this sort could have gone. Thank you!
As we enter the summer months, many of you will no doubt be traveling. Please know I will be offering prayers for your safe travels. I would also like to ask you to remember that while you are away the church will still be here doing ministry and reaching out to meet the needs of people. Your continued financial support throughout the summer months means more than I can convey in words. When you continue to give through the summer, you make it possible for the church to provide ministries that might not otherwise be met. (One way we have tried to make it easier for you to do this is by giving online). As you know, we are also receiving a new clergy member. We are delighted to announce that Josh Amerson is joining the church staff. Josh comes to us from Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church. Josh grew up in Atlanta and is a graduate of the University of Georgia. He is currently
a commissioned elder. He and his wife, Lindsey have two children, Luke and Caroline. Finally, I would simply call your attention to the fact that this is our summer edition of Connections and covers both the months of June and July. Again, thank you for all you have done to help make this last year a glorious year. I can’t begin to tell you how excited Carol and I are to be starting a new Conference year with you! Blessings,
Dan

SUPPORT MINISTRIES STEPHEN MINISTRY
GRIEF AND LOSS SUPPORT GROUP
People often ask, “What exactly is a Stephen Minister?” One way to put it is that Stephen Ministers are the “After People”.
The Career Ministry does not take the summer off! Back by popular demand two very important and key topics: Interviewing and Resume’ Development.
Stephen Ministers are there: •
after the phone call you hoped you’d never get.
•
after the divorce papers are served and the bottom falls out of your life.
•
after the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you.
•
after the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.”
•
after the nursing home director shakes your hand and says, “Welcome to your new home.”
•
after the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away, and the house suddenly seems empty.
•
after the gavel goes down, the handcuffs go on, and your loved one is led away.
•
after the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you ever dreamed possible.
•
after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck.
•
after your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out.
If you or someone you know could benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister, please call Pat DeBolt, 770396-6836. Stephen Ministers are the ‘’After People.” They are ready to come alongside you - or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives-and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed.

THE CAREER MINISTRY
Suffering the loss of a loved one - whether it is a spouse, a child, a parent, relative or a “forever” friend - is one of the greatest losses anyone has to experience. The hurt that you are feeling can seem overwhelming at times as you journey through grief. To aid in your healing and offer support and encouragement, Dunwoody UMC is offering a Grief and Loss Support Group. This confidential group allows you to express your feelings and to share with others the pain and anguish that you are feeling. Grief continues long after friends or relatives might think otherwise. This group meets the fourth Sunday of each month from 1 - 2 p.m. in the Thomas Coke Room.
“How to Ace the Interview” is the topic for June 9 and will be facilitated by Dr. Randy Lucius. Tips on how to interview at your best and what to expect during an interview - whether by phone, or in person. Come and learn what a CAR means during an interview process! July 14, Barbara Blevins will discuss “How to Create a Resume that Gets the Attention of the Hiring Manager”. This program will discuss ways to create your resume that will highlight your experience and skills and will address such topics as how best to address gaps in employment, companies no longer in business as well as how best to present yourself on paper. You will not want to miss either of these timely topics - whether you are a job seeker or someone considering a change in jobs.
DUNWOODY UMC 101 You are invited to join us for a series of introductory classes on Sunday mornings this summer for Dunwoody UMC 101 starting June 14, 21, 28 & July 12 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. If you are available, it is a great way to learn more about the United Methodist Church, ways to get involved in the life of Dunwoody UMC, and to meet people who are also new to the church. Contact Rev. David Melton, david.melton@dunwoodyumc.org with questions.

DUNWOODY UMC MISSION MONDAYS Join us Mondays, June 1, 15, 22 and July 6, 13, 20, 27* for Dunwoody UMC Mission Mondays benefiting Action Ministries and Hightower Elementary! We will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the Dunwoody UMC Fellowship Hall for potluck supper (bring a summer dish to share), sandwich making and lunch packing. This is a fun way to serve as a family (all ages are welcome). We plan to make 450 lunches at each gathering, for a total of 2700 lunches to support Action Ministries’ “Smart Lunch, Smart Kid” program. Nearly 5 | June - July 2015
800,000 children in Georgia receive free or reduced-price lunch at school, a crucial meal that disappears in the summer. We can help ensure that these kids are fed during the summer. Each week, 50 of these lunches will be delivered directly to students from our neighboring Hightower Elementary. *On July 27, instead of making lunches, we will be packing backpacks with school supplies for under privileged children in our community.

WOMEN’S MINISTRY
UMW CIRCLE – HEART AND HOME Members of Heart & Home are women from their late 40’s to mid-50‘s whose oldest child is in college. We strive to build supportive friendships with one another and to help each other as we nurture our faith and our families. We are a small group and welcome new members. We meet during the calendar year once a month, frequently on a Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church or in a member’s home. Some of our
meetings, however, are at lunch time or in the evenings. We do mission work, have spiritual programs, and have social time. We also support the church in a variety of ways, such as helping with the Christmas Eve dinner for clergy and staff, helping with Easter lunches, making casseroles for the Holiday Festival, and contributing to the children’s homes. This past year, among other things, we collected school supplies for children
for the UMW Social Action program and made tote bags to carry needed supplies for children in Mexico. We also attended a Women of Grace dinner as a group and had several guest speakers. If you are interested in visiting us at one of our meetings or events, please contact Margy Hodgson, muhodgson@bellsouth.net or 770395-1689.
W.O.W. WOMEN OF THE WORD SUMMER BIBLE STUDY Breathe: Making Room Sabbath, by Priscilla

Back by popular demand...the newest women’s study from Priscilla Shirer, Breathe: Making Room for Sabbath. The study will be held on Thursday mornings beginning June 25, from 9:30 -11:30 a.m. and last for 5 weeks, ending on July 23. We will meet in Room 258/259. One of the greatest challenges among women
www.DunwoodyUMC.org
in our culture is taking time to stop and cease from all the activities and busyness and just breathe. We are in bondage to busyness. We constantly strive to complete the limitless to-do lists that hinder us from experiencing all that God has for us. We miss the moments because we rush ahead to the next thing. By neglecting time for tranquility, serenity, and repose, we limit our Christlikeness and miss
out on some of God’s greatest gifts. It is time for us to breathe and build margin into our lives for God. If you are weary, worn out, and exhausted the concept of Sabbath will change your life. Please contact Julie Eaton, julie10e@gmail.com, to sign-up for the study and/or to make free childcare reservations. Cost for book: $ 10.00 (payable on the first day of class)

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
DUNWOODY UMC CHAPEL CARE There are so many wonderful people in our Dunwoody UMC family who take the time each week to ensure our church is so special. Often the works of many, go unnoticed, but are counted on by many.
7 | June - July 2015
Recently, a prospective bride asked to see the Chapel. When we got there, we found a husband and wife team polishing the brass candles, cleaning the altar and picking up any trash in the pews! “How lovely”, we thought, “who would know the tender care given to
make the Chapel new each week for us.” When asked about the cleaning, Diane shared that after Wednesday night Communion the brass candles are lit and turn the sticks. Many thanks to Diane & Chuck Crisillis on the work they do, without fanfare, each week.
