MARCH 2017
CONNECTIONS
THE LENTEN MARCH As we step into the month of March, the Church begins the season of Lent. In fact, this year Ash Wednesday, (the beginning of Lent) falls on March 1st.
CHILDREN OF DUNWOODY UMC
Lent is that forty-day period, not including Sundays, that leads us up to Easter Sunday. It is a time of reflection and preparation and is marked by discipline, prayer, repentance, charity, and self-denial. This year, as you make your journey through Lent, you might find the following helpful. First, we will once again be providing the Lenten Devotional Booklets. The devotions in this booklet are written by members and clergy of the church, edited by Anne West, and are also available online. Personally, I have found that reading one of these each day during Lent is a helpful discipline. Often, during the season of Lent, people choose to sacrifice something they enjoy in order that it might draw their attention to the crucified Christ. This is a wonderful practice. I also know people who observe Lent by making a commitment to do something in which they don’t ordinarily engage. For example, by helping out in a soup kitchen once a week; or by making a weekly visit to a nursing home they not only prove to be a blessing to others, but find that their own lives are enriched as well. Of course, I want to invite you to begin the season by attending our Ash Wednesday Service. Many tell me this is one of the most meaningful services they attend each year. They often explain how the ashes imposed on their foreheads in the shape of a cross has a profound impact and reminds them that as Christians we are all called to walk the same road of sacrificial love for others that Christ walked for us. Finally, please know my prayer for you this Lenten Season is that the living Christ will dwell in your hearts richly and that you will know in ways greater than ever before the love, joy, peace, and power of Jesus the Christ!

DREAM BIG
FORMAL DRESS/ TUX DONATIONS There is a wonderful opportunity coming your way that will motivate you to show your love to a community of people often overlooked. Mt Pisgah United Methodist is having a Dream Big Dance for special needs adults and youth. There’s a need for donations of formal dresses and suits so these special needs friends can dress to the nines for their spectacular evening. Your donated homecoming, prom, or formal attire will give these ladies and gentlemen coming to the dance an opportunity to select a special outfit for the evening. Many of these families do not have the financial means to acquire a dress for a single event and would be thrilled to receive a dress or a suit. All sizes are welcome! You can drop off your donations at DUMC next to the nursery entrance!

It is a fun and easy way to make a difference in the lives of those in need. Please join us…Volunteers are needed as onsite hosts, for set up/tear down, meal preparation and to supply donations to support up to four families as they transition from homelessness to self sufficiency. DUMC, along with 10 other neighboring congregations, hosts these families as they try to better their lives and those of their children while enduring difficult times. 2017 DUNWOODY UMC BLITZ BUILD
April 27-29, May 3-6
Last year’s Blitz Build was such a success, DUMC is doing it again! Habitat has changed the format slightly to allow for outside vendors to come in during the week, but we still need many hands to help us with the new Blitz Build format. Ask your co-workers to join and take a day off work to participate in our 27th house and second ever Blitz Build. Join us as we engage more volunteers to become the hearts, hands and voices for the cause of adequate and affordable housing. Yes, this requires extra effort, strong leadership, hard work and careful planning... but we have all that and more at DUMC! The impact reaches far beyond the family you are building with/for and warms your heart more than you ever imagined. There is a job for everyone - no skills required. Contact Jack and Bette Whitley at jwhitley47@aol.com or Samantha Faklaris at samantha.faklaris@dunwoodyumc.org for more information.
