Seeing Love in Action Not long ago, I was walking into the church from the soccer field when I witnessed a delightful scene. A father was leaving our church, walking on the sidewalk next to the children's playground. I’m not sure where he had been prior to that, but all of a sudden, his 3 or 4 year old daughter jumped from her swing and ran over to the fence calling out, “Daddy, Daddy, Daddy!” As I continued walking, I watched the father dart over to the fence, pick up his daughter, give her a big kiss on the cheek, set her back down on the grass and lovingly tell her goodbye. I looked around to see everyone smiling— the preschool teachers, the other nearby children, the daughter, the father and yes, me! Seeing love in action has a way of speaking to our hearts, doesn’t it? I don’t know anyone who doesn’t yearn to be loved by others. Whether you are a small child or a grown adult; whether you struggle financially or have a large portfolio; whether you live in a huge house or are homeless; whether your IQ flies off the charts on the high side, or barely makes it on the charts on the low side; whether you're and extrovert or and introvert, all of us want to be loved. It is a need that God has placed deep within us. This is one of the reasons the Church is so important. As the body of Christ, we are called to embody the same love for others that Christ has for us. Think for a moment about the love Christ has for you. It is a love that dares to walk alongside you, not only when times are good, but when life crumbles around you. It is a love that is self-sacrificing. It is a love that is patient and kind. It is a love that refuses to give up and goes to the mat for you. It is a love that is sometimes tough, sometimes tender, but always focused on others. Now, think for a moment about some of the people in your life—your parents or your children; your spouse or your friends; your co-workers or the person you play golf with; your employer or your employees; people at the church or waiters and waitresses at your favorite restaurant. Pick out one of these people and ask yourself, “How can I best represent Christ’s love to that person?” Let’s take it one step further. Christ not only asks us to love those people we know; he also calls us to love those people we don’t know. Maybe, Christ is asking you to help build a Habitat for Humanity house for someone you’ve never met. Or maybe, Christ is asking you to help feed the homeless at Trinity Table or the Women’s Community Kitchen. Maybe it will mean helping to package meals for Action Ministries during our Mission Mondays. Or maybe it will mean volunteering to visit our members confined indoors. There is a place where everyone can become involved and be an extension of Christ’s love. One thing is certain: Whomever you love and wherever you love, you can be sure it will make a difference, for love in action always has a way of speaking to people’s hearts. Your Pastor,
Rev. Dan Brown Senior Pastor

Summer Sermon Series
Ripple Effects We’ve all had the experience of throwing a small stone into a still pond and watching the ripples from that seemingly insignificant act spread out until the whole pond has been touched by it. Life is like that as well. Seemingly small acts on our part can make a huge difference. We will be exploring some of these in our series, “Ripple Effects.”
The Longing for Belonging Buried deep within each of us is a need for community, or to live in relationship with God and with one another. In this sermon series, we will be looking at this need that God has placed in each of our hearts, the challenges of living in community and how the church fits into God’s divine design.

He also spent a lot of time trying to help us capture a glimpse of the incredible nature of the Kingdom of Heaven. In this sermon series, we will be looking at some of the parables Jesus told to help us not only grasp the nature of the Kingdom, but to actually start living in it.

Youth Ministry
Serving at Hightower Homework Club Summer Camp
During the week of June 3 – 7, students a part of Dunwoody UMC’s Youth Ministry will volunteer at Hightower Homework Club (HHC) Summer Camp, a fun and educational day camp for elementary-age children in conjunction with Corners Outreach. This yearly tradition has become a favorite among our youth, who look forward to playing games and getting to know the campers. A typical day at camp is filled with activities from the moment it begins. Our DUMC youth, HHC junior camp counselors and the campers all come together in the morning to form a circle, sing songs and share excitement for the day ahead. Our students then have the unique opportunity to present a lesson, story or skit to the campers. DUMC Youth Ministry Associate, Brooke Freeman, enjoys watching the interactions and relationships that form over the course of the week. “Many of the HHC junior camp counselors went to school with our students and they know each other,” says Freeman. “So it’s fun to watch them all work together to lead games and activities with the campers.” The day continues with stations divided by grade level, each one focused on different components like outside games, reading and math practice and arts and crafts. The campers enjoy lunch before wrapping up a fun-filled day at camp. Being involved in local missions like Hightower Homework Club Summer Camp is a vital piece of the vision for missions in the Youth Ministry at Dunwoody UMC. Brooke Freeman and our Director of Youth Ministry, Dallas Pfeiffer, agree that “Mission and service start here, where we live.” This belief is rooted in the truth of Acts 1:8, which states, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the Earth.” First and foremost, we are called to witness and serve Jerusalem, our community—the city of Atlanta. That is exactly what our students are able to do through Hightower Homework Club Summer Camp, and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve our neighbors. Visit dunwoodyumc.org/youth for more information about our weekly events and how to sign up for our weekly newsletter. Contact the Youth Ministry staff at youth@dunwoodyumc.org to volunteer. dunwoodyyouth

Women's Ministry
A Look Back at the UMW Lenten Social Action Project
Each year during Lent, the United Methodist Women (UMW) members from the Atlanta Roswell District gather for a communion worship service and to work on a social action project. This year's theme was maternal and children's welfare. Family Haven, a domestic violence shelter, was chosen as the focus for the 2019 Lenten social action project. Dunwoody UMW members donated over $1,000 in gift cards to be used for groceries, gas and clothing, and over $350 in cash donations to assist in updating the center’s security system. Additionally, members donated two car trunk loads of bedding and children's items. At the event held at Pleasant Grove UMC, members assembled gift bags for the children. Contact Mary Batson at mcbatson13@ gmail.com if you are interesting in becoming part of the UMW ministry.

Building Community
A Lasting Partnership with Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity has been an integral part of DUMC’s mission work over the past 20 years. Many of our church members have rolled up their sleeves—whether it’s been to install interior walls, shingle rooftops, help with landscaping or volunteer at the Dunwoody UMC Holiday Festival. These efforts have built communities and assisted those in need of adequate shelter—all with a mindset of spreading Christian love and fellowship. According to Missions Director, Chris Mixer, “Dunwoody UMC’s first Habitat build was in 1995. Starting in 2016, DUMC moved to a ‘Blitz Build’ format with an accelerated construction schedule that allows for greater efficiency.” The Blitz Build takes approximately 300 volunteers over a seven day period to build a house from ground-up. One of the many benefits of this build is that it promotes volunteering during the work week. Many companies allow their staff to take paid time off for volunteer efforts. Longtime Habitat for Humanity volunteer and DUMC member Jack Whitley says, “We’ve had real estate agents, hotel staffs, foreign mission teams, Sunday school classes, as well as the local news team from 11Alive television participate.” He goes on to say, “Not only is the job site buzzing with activity, it is also filled with enthusiastic people solving a major problem in our area—eliminating sub-standard housing and providing new opportunities for first-time homeowners.”
“Our tasks are more than simply building walls, hanging siding, roofing and painting. We are building community, participating in Christian fellowship and doing what Matthew 25 calls us to do."
Thanks to the hard work and money raised from DUMC’s Holiday Festival each November, building a home is a reality. This festival spans DUMC’s campus with over 100 local artisans, silent auction, attic treasures, pancake breakfast, Chick-fil-A or BBQ lunches, a gourmet shop, photos with Santa, activities and crafts for children, as well as the sale of kitchen-tested frozen casseroles. The money raised from this single event funds the Habitat house construction in its entirety. Highlights from DUMC’s long history with Habitat for Humanity include our church’s sponsorship of the Atlanta Habitat’s 1,000th home and working alongside volunteers from United Methodist churches around the city. Plus, over the last three years, as part of Habitat’s “Brush with Kindness” campaign, DUMC has sponsored and repainted the exterior of houses built in 1995 – 1997.
The DUMC Habitat for Humanity 2019 Blitz Build is completing its final days and preparing for the dedication ceremony on Saturday, May 4. You can imagine the excitement of the new home owner, Ms. Lawrence, who relocated to Atlanta in 1997 from Philadelphia. According to Jack and Bette Whitley, who just completed their 29th house, “Ms. Lawrence is eager to have a home that she can call her own and one that her family can visit. She is looking forward to living in the South River Gardens (Atlanta) neighborhood and meeting her new Habitat neighbors.” The Whitley’s have been instrumental in DUMC’s long history with Habitat, and they encapsulate our special partnership best through their reflection: "DUMC’s vision is to be a dynamic Christian community of fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. Our Holiday Festival and annual participation with Atlanta Habitat for Humanity are ways that we demonstrate just that. Our tasks are more than simply building walls, hanging siding, roofing and painting. We are building community, participating in Christian fellowship and doing what Matthew 25 calls us to do. Bette and I have participated in all 29 house builds (plus repainted many of the first builds). But, we have received so much more than we have given. We have grown closer to people from our church and have been blessed to meet so many fine people in our larger Atlanta community. We’re constantly in awe of Habitat recipients who work hard to better their living conditions for themselves and their families, while also building up the neighborhoods in which they become new residents. Bette and I are thankful for the many new friendships and fond memories from Habitat for Humanity—a mission very near and dear to our hearts."

DUMC Partners with The Alzheimer’s Association
This past March, Dunwoody UMC linked arms with the Alzheimer’s Association to bring our very first Early Stage Support Group to the church. The group is a professional and supportive environment of peers who are living in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias. The program, led by a certified aging specialist and a licensed clinical social worker, seeks to empower, educate and provide peer support for the person that has been diagnosed and their care partner. The group is open not only to church members, but also to the larger community. Early Stage Program Director for the Alzheimer’s Association, Mary Caldwell, asserts that “Many people with the early stages of dementias and mild cognitive impairments are driving, working and staying active in their faith communities. But their diagnosis creates a “We are learning stigma of being unable to function in society, often isolating them at a time when they really tangible ways to need love and support.” That’s where the support our diagnosed Early Stage Support Group comes in. Through neighbors and keep the program, we are learning tangible ways them involved in the to support our diagnosed neighbors and keep them involved in the community of DUMC. community of DUMC.”
During their monthly meetings, the Early Stage Support Group provides a time for those diagnosed and their care takers to come together as one before reading through relevant material and discussing topics in separate groups. While this regular, supportive environment is beneficial, many group members say that the most powerful benefit of the program is the community that it creates through social engagement. From museum visits to monthly luncheons, their shared moments of joy and laughter serve as a constant reminder that there is hope, and a good life is possible. Pre-registration and screening for the program is provided through The Alzheimer’s Association. To receive free educational resources, or to register for the next session, please call the Alzheimer’s Association at 800-272-3900.
