A HISTORIC UNDERTAKING the congregation, which will help create a greater sense of intimacy. The sound system will be greatly enhanced and fix many of the problems that we have lived with for years. And, we will not only be replacing our HVAC system, but work is being done to make it much more efficient.

It’s hard to believe. In May we move out of the Sanctuary to begin construction. We have celebrated our last Easter, Confirmation S u n d ay, Yo u t h S u n d ay a n d Mother’s Day in the Sanctuary as we know it. We will look forward to the fall when we will enter a newly renovated Sanctuary. The choir will move to the front and the Sanctuary will be outfitted with everything needed to make it possible for both the Contemporary and Traditional Services to worship in the same space. Bob Preston, the Chairperson of our Building Committee tells me that the newly renovated space is going to be spectacular. Aesthetically, it is going to be warm and worshipful. Our lighting will make it possible for us to provide possibilities for worship that are not presently available to us. The Chancel Area will be closer to

In the meantime, there will be a significant amount of shuffling around. The Morning Prayer and Communion Service moves into the Chapel. The Traditional Service moves into the Fellowship Hall. Children’s Sunday School moves into the gymnasium. Church staff will be scattered around the building or placed in a mobile unit located on the grounds. It will be a temporary situation and should not last beyond October. However, if you have ever lived through a renovation of your home, you know that it is going to require some patience. Things will not necessarily be where they have always been. Space will have to be shared among many groups of people. Some of the comforts we have enjoyed we will have to forgo temporarily. That said, I have always found this to be a congregation that faces these sorts of situations with a good spirit, and that helps turn frustrations into joy and celebration. It may

also help to remember, you are a part of a historic undertaking here at DUMC. Which leads me to what I really want to say in this article. I am so proud of you as a congregation. What we are doing is not easy, but it is important for all of the reasons we have previously outlined: enhancement of our worship services, unity of the Church and potential growth of the congregation. Not all congregations would have taken on the task, supported it the way you have supported it and been willing to step boldly into the future. However, you have done so, and it is a joy to be a part of a church that doesn’t just look backward, but dares to live forward. As I say, I am proud of you, and I believe some of the best days in the life of Dunwoody UMC are not those that are behind us (as great some of those days have been), but they are the days that are ahead of us. I’m grateful to share the journey with you. Your Pastor,

CONNECTIONS RENOVATION Connections magazine is also undergoing a renovation. This issue is the first of three seasonal issues which will carry us through the end of 2018. MISSIONS FOSTER CARE Currently Georgia has approximately 13,500 children in foster care and that number continues to increase each year! Many children are born into families who are unable to care for them. Far too many are growing up without permanent, supportive, and loving families to guide and nurture them. In addition, the number of families willing to take in these children has not been able to keep up with the growing number of foster children in the system. Here are some statistics to consider: • 100% - Increase in the number of children in the system over the past 4 years • 50% - Removed from homes due to neglect • 30 – Number of times a week the United Methodist Children’s Home has to say “No” to children in need. If every church in Georgia had one foster family, and could take care of one foster child, there would be no shortage of foster homes. We believe that our church can do more than take in the minimum of one child. Together we can transform the lives of many foster children, whether they are with us for life after being adopted, or if they are with us for a short amount of time and return to their biological parent(s). Even if we can briefly touch one child’s life and show him/her God’s love through our congregation, that child could be transformed or carry that interaction and memory with him/her forever. God touches our hearts to serve in different ways. You may be called to be a foster parent. If that seems overwhelming, you may be called to organize meals or supplies for a foster family. You may be able to babysit, transport, or mentor a child. You may have handyman, shopping or cleaning skills that will help a foster family while they focus on taking care of a child. You may be able to do diaper/supply drives, provide gift cards or say prayers for the family. All of these roles are important to this ministry and to the life of a child. Our mission is to transform the life of one child at a time. If you would like to get involved, please contact Rosemary Watts at wrosemary@hotmail.com to find out more.

YOUTH MINISTRY HALLE GRACE SCOTT MEMORIAL YOUTH SUMMER INTERNSHIP This internship was established in loving memory of Halle Grace Scott (May 30, 1996 – April 27, 2017). It is important to know something about Halle’s life in order to understand why the internship was created. The intern should embody her values, be kind hearted and service oriented, have a love of others and a belief in our Savior Jesus Christ.

Halle Grace Scott

Halle grew up in Dunwoody and attended DUMC from early childhood. She participated in Sunday school and VBS, and was later confirmed into the faith at DUMC. She was active in youth ministries at the church, with regular attendance and meaningful participation. This included serving at Great Day of Service, youth choir, Halloween Pumpkin Patch, Christmas Tree Lot, Food Stock, Habitat for Humanity and youth mission trips. As a cheerleader at Dunwoody High School, Halle continued the 5th Quarter program at DUMC where high school kids would come to the church for after-game activities. Halle was a very successful student who excelled in her scholastic endeavors, largely because she always gave them her best efforts and refused to quit until the work was done. She was competitive in sports and games, yet she would shrug off any loss and be the first to congratulate the winner. Halle was friendly to everyone she met, sharing her great sense of humor. Her laugh was infectious, and she would always be the first to laugh at herself. Her friends knew her to be unpretentious and sincere. She cared deeply about her family, her friends, her school and her church. She loved animals, especially her dog, Bandit. Halle’s life ended abruptly in a horrific automobile accident that also claimed the lives of three other beautiful sophomore girls at UGA on April 27, 2016. Halle was not quite 20 years old when she passed Earth’s bounds for the Kingdom of Heaven, but she left an indelible imprint in the hearts of so many who knew her. “Her smile could light up any room.” Ginna Feiman

We are very pleased to announce that Ginna Feiman has accepted the inaugural Halle Scott Memorial Youth Summer Internship. Ginna embodies the characteristics and values that Halle did – she is kind hearted, service minded, has a love for others and a core belief in Jesus Christ. Ginna grew up and was confirmed at DUMC. She was a huge part of the youth program, including youth choir, mission trips, leading middle school small groups and chaperoning the 6th grade confirmation retreat. Ginna is finishing her freshman year at Georgia Southern University, majoring in early childhood education, is very involved in campus ministry and leads a middle school girls small group there. She is a 2017 graduate of Dunwoody High School. We are very excited to have Ginna’s leadership in youth ministry this summer. - Valerie and Steve Scott

WELCOME DALLAS PFEIFFER

Please welcome Dallas Pfeiffer as the new Director of Youth Ministries. Dallas Pfeiffer began his ministry with our students and families at Dunwoody UMC on Monday, April 16. Our search committee, led by Rev. Josh Amerson and Wendy Schmitt (SPRC representative) with the help of Slingshot Group, interviewed several highly-qualified candidates. Dallas received the unanimous support of the search committee and the Staff-Parish Relations Committee. Dallas brings nine years of experience from the 6,000-member Christ United Methodist Church in Memphis, TN as the Director of Middle School Ministries and as Congregational Care Minister. He holds a Masters of Divinity from Asbury and an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia. Dallas recently relocated to the Atlanta area with wife, Tina, and two children. We look forward to seeing Dallas shape the next generation of Youth Ministry at Dunwoody United Methodist Church. www.DunwoodyUMC.org
