Home for the Holidays As the holidays approach, it is likely you will hear Perry Como occasionally crooning the lines to that old favorite… Oh, there’s no place like home for the holidays,‘Cause no matter how far away you roam, When you pine for the sunshine of a friendly gaze, For the holidays, you can’t beat home, sweet home. I have always loved that song, but I have never quite thought of it in the way I do this year. By the time you read this edition of Connections, the holidays will be rapidly approaching. At the same time, we either will have just entered or will only be days away from moving back into our Sanctuary. For many, it will be like coming home for the holidays. For others, it will be like going to a new home. Either way, we will be home for the holidays. During the time we have been out of the Sanctuary, I have been so grateful we had a place to worship as nice as our Fellowship Hall. It has been a wonderful home for the Contemporary Service for more than five years now. However, we were beginning to max out on space and needed to prepare for a future that will include continued growth for that service. It also has been a pleasant place for the Traditional Service to meet in the interim. It has provided an intimacy that many felt did not exist in the old Sanctuary. I recall after our first week in our temporary setting, one member, who was initially unhappy about the idea of worshiping in the Fellowship Hall, approached me and said, “I love it in here.” After she left I worried whether she would be able to make the transition back to our permanent home. I think she will love it, as I believe all of you will as well. As we think about going back into the Sanctuary I would like to remind you of some things. To begin with, there will be a couple of weeks of adjustment as we get used to a whole new sound system, video equipment, lighting, banners, seating arrangement for the choir, and a temporary organ that is intended to carry us through to next summer when our beautiful new organ will be installed. We also will have to get used to transitioning the Sanctuary from our Contemporary Service to the Traditional Service. In the not too distant future this will become routine, like a well-oiled machine. However, in the early days, it will probably take a little more energy and effort as we get used to a new way of doing things. Our decorations, especially during the Advent and Christmas seasons are likely to be a “bit” different. The Worship Committee has been working on this now for weeks, and they will make it as special as possible but it might have a “bit” of a different look. I hope you will use this time as an opportunity to invite friends and family, especially those who don't have a church home, to join us for worship. During these next few weeks we have a unique opportunity to do a “soft invitation” to worship by telling them about the new Sanctuary. Then, once they are here, we can invite them to learn more about Christ and discover the joy of a personal relationship with him. I am excited. I hope you are as well as we prepare to be “Home for the Holidays.”

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Dan Brown Senior Pastor

Sanctuary Renovations Past, Present and Future

Dunwoody United Methodist Church was founded in 1899 as people from Dunwoody and surrounding locales began an interdenominational Sunday School to pray and sing together. In those early times, church members arrived before Sunday services to fire up the kerosene lamp that hung in the center of the room, providing heat and light. The church members cleaned the building, and the only paid employee was Pastor Zedekiah Speer. Sunday School took place in one big room, and classes were separated by simple curtains that hung in four corners. Fast forward to the 21st century and so much has changed. Though the brick and mortar may look different, Dunwoody UMC’s commitment to honoring those that have gone before, while building a better future for those ahead, is a common thread throughout the history of our church. The current Sanctuary renovations join a long list of significant improvements in DUMC’s history. We moved from the simple one room building in 1903 to the building of the original parsonage in 1912. In 1935 plans began to build a new church across the street from the original building, and that building opened in 1941. In the mid-1950’s, an addition was built in the back of the chapel, and a cover added over the front door. Today, this building serves as our Chapel. In 1970, a larger sanctuary was built adjacent to the Chapel and served our growing congregation well for many years. In 1999, DUMC embarked on a long-range building plan to expand our campus and provide for the needs of a growing congregation and community. This first phase was to construct the Wiley and Linda Stephens Activities Building. Phase 2 saw the building of the current sanctuary in 2003. Over the past two decades, DUMC has experienced significant growth in our congregation size. We now are the fourth largest church in the Atlanta-Roswell District with more than 5,000 members. However, with the blessing of growth comes the need to expand and adapt. In early 2016, the Church Council adopted the recommendation of the Strategic Planning Task Force to implement a five-year strategic plan. Worship enhancement was among the initial priorities. To help address matters such as church unification and trends of worship styles, the Board of Trustees commissioned a Building Committee to study a Sanctuary enhancement program to make it possible for the Sanctuary to accommodate both Traditional and Contemporary worship styles.

In May 2017, the Church Council approved the formation of a Capital Campaign committee. Between June and October 2017, the Moving Forward Together Capital Campaign reached and exceeded the $5.6 million goal with pledges from more than 650 households. As many of our members have seen (and heard), construction in and around the Sanctuary began in early May 2018 and is anticipated to finish by the end of the year. Renovations include upgrades to the chancel, Sanctuary and balcony areas; modernized acoustical, sound, video and lighting; organ renovation; and, heating and air system improvements. Bob Preston, Chair of the Building Committee, explains the process, “The focus was initially on the administrative office areas underneath the Sanctuary where steel columns, beams and foundations had to be reinforced to support the extra weight that would be added to the chancel area due to the relocation of the choir loft, the expansion of the chancel area and the addition of the organ.” Preston says the focus quickly shifted inside the Sanctuary where demolition of the existing walls and ceilings took place to make way for new construction including: acoustical banner and video screen installation, decorative cornice reconstruction, and structural, electrical and mechanical modifications in the attic. The final weeks of construction are dedicated to the chancel area and construction to accommodate the choir moving to the front of the Sanctuary. The balcony also will be reconfigured to include a control center for the new sound system and lighting, as well as new organ installation. When joining the United Methodist Church, we make a promise to uphold the Church by our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. It’s apparent that these latest renovations to our physical building are a direct result of DUMC members fulfilling those vows. It is a commonality shared by past and present members. In the book, “The Story of Dunwoody Methodist Church,” which was written in 1962 and can be found in the DUMC library, Pastor Jack R. Bozeman says it best: “When we build, let us think we build forever. Let it not be for present delight nor present use alone. Let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for, and let us think, as we lay on stone, that a time will come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say as they look upon our labor, ‘See! This our Fathers did for us.’”

Youth Ministry

Christmas Tree Sales Fund Youth Missions

Pancake Study Break Wednesday, Dec. 19, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Take a break from studying for finals to have fun and fellowship while refueling with pancakes.

The middle school mission trip to Birmingham was impactful. Several of our youth made new friends and reconnected with old. Student Claire Mutert said, “I made some really good friends with people at my church and from the other churches. It’s always to help others alongside friends.” Other students had meaningful experiences while visiting their service sites. Molly Kotzin said, “I loved the people that I served with and the relationships I made at Sparkle Dance Academy.”

Welcome to 2019 2019 starts with the return of High School Night on Sunday, Jan. 6, from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and Middle School Night on Wednesday, Jan. 9, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Did you know that Christmas tree sales benefit the Youth Mission Fund and allow DUMC students to serve in missions throughout the year? During summer 2018, our youth traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, and the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee to serve others.

Our high school mission trip to Mountain T.O.P. (Tennessee Outreach Project) was eye-opening and focused on building relationships. This trip offered our high school students leadership roles in small groups of other like-minded students from all over the country. The experience allowed them to worship and witness the love of Christ through service and relationship building. Help support this life-transforming ministry by pre-ordering a Christmas tree or wreath at dunwoodyumc.org, or visiting the tree lot. Opens on Nov. 23.

Summit Counseling

A Culture of Care

Counseling Resources at DUMC

With its main office in Johns Creek, Summit Counseling Center opened a satellite location at Dunwoody UMC in June of 2016. As one of Summit’s valued ‘Partners in Caring,’ our church is grateful for the opportunity to extend Summit’s professional counseling services to our congregation and the larger Dunwoody community. The Summit Counseling Center brings hope and healing to people in need at every stage of life, providing a wide range of specialty services for individuals, couples and families. Summit therapists are fully licensed and offer professional counseling that integrates body, mind, spirit and community. In 2018, DUMC focused donations toward helping Summit pursue a partnership with the DeKalb County School System to open the first Summit OnSite, a school-based program at Dunwoody High School. Offering confidential mental health therapy in schools, the program is already thriving in 15 Fulton County schools. To learn more about Summit Counseling Center at Dunwoody UMC, visit www.summitcounseling.org or call 678-893-5300.

The holiday season is upon us. With its arrival, we embrace the familiar return of a few things: mile-long grocery lists, an occupied guest room, carefully crafted Christmas lists and a full calendar. But for some, the holiday season can be one of loneliness, depression and simply feeling overwhelmed with it all. In the wake of losing a loved one or facing unforeseen circumstances, the holidays are often a difficult reminder of the pain we are processing. We are dedicated to walking alongside our congregation and community through these difficult times. At Dunwoody UMC, we strive to provide the best care through resources that are available throughout the year. Halle Grace Scott Memorial Youth Summer Internship

Halle grew up in Dunwoody and was an active member of Dunwoody UMC in the Children’s and Youth programs. She was kind hearted, service oriented, had a love for others and a core belief in our Savior Jesus Christ. She gave her best in everything she did, using the gifts that God gave her. Halle drew others in with that certain sparkle in her eyes and a smile that lit up any room. She shared the love of Jesus as she extended her hand in friendship to everyone. Halle’s life ended abruptly in a horrific automobile accident that also claimed the lives of three other beautiful sophomore girls at UGA on April 27, 2016. Halle was not quite 20 years old when she passed Earth’s bounds for the Kingdom of Heaven, but she left an indelible imprint in the hearts of so many who knew her. This internship was established in loving memory of Halle Grace Scott (May 30, 1996 – April 27, 2016) as an opportunity for college students and young adults who have a heart for youth ministry to be a part of the summer Youth Ministry staff. The intern we seek is someone who embodies Halle’s core values. For summer 2019, the application must be submitted by January 15 and the position will be awarded by February 15. For more information or to request an application, contact Rev. Josh Amerson at josh.amerson@ dunwoodyumc.org or Dallas Pfeiffer at dallas.pfeiffer@dunwoodyumc.org.
