• Throughout 2013 we continued our mission – helping children and strengthening families in the Kansas City area. This is our time to share with you how we did in the following pages ... and also to give you a glimpse into what we’re planning for 2012: • The Family Conservancy is a founding member of the Children’s Campus of Kansas City — a center for excellence in parenting and early education. A major role of the Children’s Campus is to seek out and leverage synergies with our partners and community. In our first full year since the new Children’s Campus facility opened, we are providing mental health services for the 150 children at Project EAGLE Head Start child care facility and partnering with the University of Kansas Juniper Gardens Children’s Project on 18 research projects that will advance helping young children thrive and learn in child care.We are in discussions with Google, as a part of the Google High-Speed network deployment, to provide trainings to greater Kansas City child care professionals and mental health services to families via video chat. When implemented this will reduce many obstacles clients would have withtransportation and improve the efficiency and increase coverage for our mental health professionals. • The Family Conservancy has plans to unveil a new website in 2012 that will more greatly integrate social media and provide a streamlined way to get information to today’s parents who rely heavily on social media and networking in their day-to- day lives. Our agency also plans to enhance our brand with a new service mark – TFC. • •Finally, we are embarking on updating our strategic vision for the future that will reflect recent economic and social changes and to expand upon our mission that strives for continued and greater success for all of our Kansas City children and families. We are grateful to all our stakeholders for supporting the work we do in Kansas City! We’re so proud to be a part of helping Kansas City become a great place to raise children.

Thank you for helping thousands of Kansas City families in 2013 through our services. With your help we were able to touch thousands of lives and make enormous changes in the lives of families in need. Here are examples of how you made a difference:

1,317 families received parenting resources through Child Care Aware 9,000 School’s Out! Guides were distributed, directing families to safe, enriching summer activities 67 homeless teen students were given support in order to complete high school 60 families attended classes on positive parenting at Juniper Gardens public housing 2,783 child care providers were inspired through the 171 9 professional development events
• 165 teachers in Wyandotte County preschool class- rooms received training on Second Step - a classroom curriculum designed to teach skills that help children learn, manage their feelings, make friends and solve problems. • We collaborate with Project EAGLE Head Start at the Children’s Campus of Kansas City to provide mental health services for 150 children and their families in their Educare Center. • In our Healthy Parents, Healthy Kids program 10 parents and 10 children actively participated in the gardening experience with Cultivate Kansas City, and two parents were hired as Healthy Food Team promoters and food demonstrators at the Juniper Gardens Farmers Market.
• The Family Conservancy hosted a School’s Out! KC event at Paradise Park on June 4 to promote qual- ity family play time. During the event, families that mentioned our agency were able to enjoy attractions at half off and interact with Radio Disney DJs, sing- ers and dancers. • The Family Conservancy hosted a birthday party for 50+ kids in our program at Chouteau Court public housing. Many of these kids had never received a birthday party before. • Hundreds of people helped homeless teens stay in high school by attending the 58th annual Kiwanis Pancake Day in March.

When Kyle was court-ordered to attend an anger management program at The Family Conservancy, he came into class with a belligerent attitude and clearly stated he didn’t want to be there. A fight with his girlfriend had gotten him arrested, and he was also about to lose his job for insubordination. He frowned through the first two sessions with his arms folded. Then slowly a subtle change occurred. Kyle started looking at his own behaviors. Eventually he was willing to accept feedback regarding his actions. At one session Kyle reported that his supervisor complimented him about the change in his ability to get along with co-workers. Kyle decided to change his circle of friends and move away from the lifestyle he had been leading. He quit spending time at the bar and enrolled in college to finish his degree. At the end of the anger management program, he said that this was the best time and money he had ever spent.

Sometimes a child’s experiences are heartbreakingly severe. Anna spent her earliest years surrounded by violence and drug use. When her parents were arrested and taken away, Anna went to live with her grandparents. They thought she had survived unscathed, yet Anna’s grandparents soon realized that she suffered severe headaches and exhibited irritability and violent play. They called The Family Conservancy for advice. Our mental health counselor helped Anna and her grandparents repair past harms. Now in a stable and nurturing home, Anna can express her feelings and is learning to trust and to make friends. She sleeps soundly, smiles more and no longer gets headaches.

When his newborn sister Ellora tested positive for cocaine, 17-month-old Kyden’s life changed forever. Roger and Diane adopted the siblings, and the children got a new lease on life. Still it was a long process to reverse the early neglect Kyden had suffered. Kyden reacted poorly to change – throwing tantrums and tearing up games. Roger and Diane worried that Kyden wouldn’t be able to enter kindergarten. They called The Family Conservancy for advice. Our therapist provided tools so that teachers could help Kyden cope with changes, talk about his feelings and calm down. Your support has made it possible this year for Kyden and more than 20 other youngsters to make a successful transition into early education programs. By partnering with parents and child care professionals, we’re helping to overcome barriers so that children will be prepared to succeed when they enter school. 16

We remain comitted to putting our programs first. Prioritizing the needs of the people we help over that of administration and arbitrary money pits which befall many other non-profits.
