was coming back to TV, she was excited to work with him again. And then she learned the show was centered on four New York women. (She knows what you’re thinking, because she thought it too.) But “Younger is different,” she says. “Sutton’s character, trying to pass for 26, has a daughter and is trying to put herself together in something she can afford, in her own original way.” Plus, she deadpans, “there’s no Carrie.”
UGLY BETTY
America Ferrera 2006 –10
FOR THE PILOT of this hit
series, Field had to find the perfect outfit for awkward Betty Suarez (America Ferrera) to wear to her first day at Mode magazine. “The director wanted color,” she says. “You couldn’t give him enough.” This poncho had to be just right. “We made the poncho less ethnic, a little more pop. I was making parodies of fashion and culture.” As for Betty’s signature specs, “those are my personal glasses,” Field says. “When we were doing the first fittings, I said, ‘Here, try these.’ America wanted to wear them, so that was that.”
“IS THAT MY COAT?!” NO, NO, THAT WASN’T A QUESTION.
FIELD’S OWN ORANGE FUR-COAT/CAPE THING HAS APPEARED IN THREE OF HER PROJECTS. (“I WISH I KNEW WHERE IT WAS,” SHE SAYS.)

just one season, followed four New York City women (Lucy Liu, Frances O’Connor, Miranda Otto, and Bonnie Somerville) who had been pals for years. Sound familiar? “There were a lot of Sex and the City wannabes,” Field says, adding that she’d like to dress more men. “That’s a blank slate for me.” At least Cashmere reteamed her with Liu, who had done one episode of SATC. “The Birkin episode,” she says, laughing. “Lucy Liu gets it.”
