The Proliferation of 5G Explained by Jason Solis | Jan 5, 2022 | Jason Solis, Technology
One might be wondering what the term 5 G usually means. In simple terms, 5G refers to the fifth mobile network generation that was preceded by other global wireless networks such as the 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G. What is exciting and different about the 5G network from its previous predecessors is its power to connect almost any device from machine to object globally and its fast speed. The essence of having a 5G network in place is to experience the higher multi-Gbps data speeds that are not available in the other network options. 5G is a high-performance network that is ultra-low in latency and super reliable. Consequently, the 5G network capacity is unmatched, and its availability goes unchallenged by the previous network options. With a 5G network it is hard to experience redundancy even with many users connected to the network.

The 5G network is not owned or invented by a single person, so no company can claim ownership of this fantastic technology. But, there are individuals and companies committed to ensuring that the 5G network sees the light of the day. Their contribution to resources and conducting research is bearing fruits as the technology adoption into the industry is gaining momentum. One of the companies that have played a significant role in developing this technology is an American-based company known as Qualcomm. Qualcomm has been an essential player in developing and contributing to the invention of most technologies that have played a vital role in making the 5G network a reality. The company is committed to ensuring that 5G becomes a standard wireless network. Qualcomm works with other regulatory organizations, such as the 3rd Generation Partnership project, which is mandated to define and provide industry specifications for 3G network use. The organization also regulates and establishes global standards for 4G LTE, HSPA, and 5G technologies. Qualcomm has maintained a strong working relationship with the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) in supporting and providing fundamental technologies for developing 5G technology design. Some of the areas that have contributed immensely to these designs include the service layer and the air interface design. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project works with other industry players in infrastructure development, device manufacturing, and vendor component design.
