Get a Solid Foundation with English for the Academic Purposes Training In Canada, English is the primary language used to communicate in the workplace and in society. In order to not only live happily, but also work successfully in the country, having a grasp (including speaking and writing skills) on the English language is necessary. That’s especially true if you are looking to enter the corporate world. Luckily, Centennial College offers its English for Academic Purposes program, which essentially encompasses English communication training and English second language training. How long you remain in the program is completely dependent of your goals for the future. Depending on the grasp you already have of the language, you may be placed in the first level and take all three levels of the program (translating to three semesters) or you may be placed in the second or third levels. Once students achieve high grades in Level 3, they will have met Centennial College’s English language requirement for most its programs. In addition, Level 3 students earn a college credit that they can apply to future study. So what type of English second language training does this postsecondary certificate program offer? The focus is on helping to build English language skills for success in college, university or a career by exhibiting a nurturing and supportive academic environment. The faculty members who teach the English communication training are there every step of the way helping you to build your strength in the English language through practical exercises, communicative activities, presentations, assignments and group work. Some of the areas covered in the program are: writing and reading, speaking and listening as well as academic study. Students of English for Academic Purposes also have access to resources that help them along the way, such as computer labs, the library, conversation practice groups and tutoring. Specific English second language training courses include: Building Basic Language Skills, The Canadian Context, Reading CollegeLevel Texts, Approaches to English Composition and more. In addition, this English communication training program is fully accredited by Languages Canada, Canada’s premier language organization. This means it has met rigorous standards in terms of curriculum, teacher qualifications, student services and administration. For more benefits of the English for Academic Purposes program, check out its benefits webpage. To apply for this fulltime English second language undertaking, you must present an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. Second, there is a language skills assessment. However, this is not a program for absolute beginners. Students must have completed a beginner’s level language program prior to applying to the English for Academic Purposes program. Lastly, please not that possession of minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission into the program. − Author By: Jason White
