Rakvere Vabaduse Square Competition Rakvere, Estonia
The current situation where the area once planned as Vabaduse Square has become a large traffic circle. This has not come about as a result of clear and conscious planning. Instead, the state of the area is the result of various circumstances and the surrounding environment. The square is not usable in a practical sense and the entire area is taken up by traffic and is uncomfortable for pedestrians. The present Vabaduse Square with its large traffic circle is to be redesigned as a public square that would be usable for daily activities as well as for public events.
The new square is to retain the perspective between the War of Independence monument and the church as well as the perspective of the Rakvere Secondary School building. A new construction area is planned next to Vabaduse Square for a future public building with a gross area of 10,000m2. The vision for this new construction is to develop the area into a learning hub - comprising of the new inter-university study and research library, the Rakvere Public Library, the study centre for Rakvere’s institutions of higher education, as well as the public conference centre.
Drawing inspiration from the winter landscape scenes of Henrick Avercamp, Vabaduse Square would mirror the cultural narrative of life in Rakvere. Alive both in the summer and winter months, the crowds of people would engage in a wide range of activities fused with the surrounding built environment.
View of the proposed Vabaduse Square and St. Paul’s, emphazing the cultural narrative of how Rakvere could embrace a new winter and summer wonderland.
St Paul’s Church Competition Rakvere, Estonia
The new annex to St. Paul’s has respected the recommendations of the heritage report and thus preserving the visions of the original architect Alar Kotli. The new works unfold from Vabaduse Square and uses the circulation through to St. Paul’s as gallery, cafe and anti space. Orientation is maintained via crafted vistas of St. Paul’s and adjoining courtyards.
By forcing the circulation to the edge of the building the illusion on distance is increased and at the same time natural light is easily introduced to the gallery and anti spaces. As the building unfolds and lightly links to St Paul’s, it re-organises itself and becomes an ordered and coherent response to the programme. Servicing and deliveries are all linked to St Paul’s via subterranean links, thus preserving the two buildings as separate entities.
Sketch of an early stage idea of the revealed vista of Vabaduse Square and St. Paul’s beyond.
Suspended theatrically within the free space of St Paul’s church hovers ‘an Ode to Avro Part’. Inspired by Part’s characteristic minimalism, hypnotic repetition, and aleatoric exploration in his compositions, the Ode is a multifunctional enclosure that uniquely challenges the boundaries of form and function. With variable docking positions of the multifunctional pod and stage, St. Paul’s can truly boast multi functionality for all genres of music.
