II BONDS in Columbus, IN / Iowa State University [ISU] ‘11 The legacy of Columbus,’ innovations in industr y and architecture has shaped the community’s pride towards the city. This inter vention is one in which the legacy is showcased as a way of telling the stor y of Columbus, and one that acts as a platform for bonding between community members. To the direct right is a wood and twine model representing the conceptual basis on which this design emerged.

Urban Strategy People’s circulation on the main street was tracked and defined the location of the plaza. The cafe and multipurpose hall are adjacent to the plaza which has diverse seating options with steps and an accessible ramp to the ampitheatre.. All design and visual production work was divided equally.

Shafts of Light Light shafts are dispersed through the building, piercing through all floors and offer views into other floors. The distance and physical screen present a contemplative atmosphere. Plaza Nightlife The facade works as a mass, elevated by a frame, with light shafts piercing through to negotiate the two contrasting elements. The plaza space is a multipurpose space to activate the site in the evening.

III CONTEMPLATIVE ENCLAVES / ISU ‘11 Slow volume in a fast city

A Space for Contemplation Within the dynamic nature of New York, SoHo sits in the midst, hearing echoes of fast life. The place needed a clog in the system, a block of slow life, that frames the city, but secludes you from it to allow a new view of the place.

A seclusion & a contemplative surface are necessary for an enclave providing an escape from the ‘noise’ of the city. The contemplative surface must be a textural pattern with embedded subtle complexities that beg the mind to wander. Studies were made of textures for the facade and the apartment walls. All design and visual production work was divided equally.

IV FRAMEWORK + IMPROVISATION / ISU fall ‘12

Boston Hall for Experimental Music

The Concept of Jazz The uniqueness of Jazz as a musical form lies in its structure, whereby it is partially controlled with a prescribed rhythm and melody, and the rest is improvised. Framework + Improvisation The city of Boston reveals itself as an improvised city, constantly growing with landfills infrastructure built wherever needed. As it is today, there are several auditoriums and venues for Jazz and Classical music. We therefore focused the project on a large hall for experimental music, where we create a framework of full flexibility [seating arrangements, acoustics, outdoor connection], for the musicians to improvise with and consequently create new forms of music. I was equally involved in all stages of the work except the structural design.

VI NEEDLAB WORKSHOP / Needlab Events ‘17 Architecture workshop on digital fabrication with local materials

needlab_kuwait matters Needlab is a workshop company that travels to different countries and collaborates with Fab Labs and unive to teach students how to use the latest technologies in digital fabrication, latest software for parametric mo and structural and environmental analysis to build structures that could enhance urban living all with only manufactured materials. In Kuwait, sand-lime brick was used to build a pavilion in a popular park in the ci is frequented by the general public and was designed to be self-shading and allow for venturi-effect ventilat provide a cool environment for park-goers to rest in.

The team consisted of the founder of needlab, Sameera Chukkapalli, partners of Basics architects, Dr. Rodrigo and Alessandro Mattocia, myself, Ahmed Almonsouri and Ameena AlQabandi. I was the coordinator of the wor getting sponsors, engaging the local Fab Lab, collaborating with the university to hold classes and a discussion about decentralized fabrication of which I was a panelist. I also organized a lecture series at the visitor centre park which invited several architects in practice and academia to show their work and speak about their philoso I also promoted the event by consulting graphic designers, Almakan design studio, and some art and design media channels to share the events with the general public but mainly the architecture students of the univers

VII MATERIAL LANDSCAPES / The Maker Issue - Select, spring ‘17 Cartographic visual mapping research project

Materials + Production Mapping Select is an annual journal exposing local creative talents; 2017 was the year to showcase product designers, so I interviewed all who were in the book and researched about material import, production and sales to and from Kuwait by these designers. WTD in New York were the theme consultants for this journal and Two Thirds were the graphic designers, originally I was briefed by WTD that the mapping will be on one spread, but as the mapping developed and after working closely with the graphic designer, we decided to make it a fold-out four-page spread so that each map can be twice as large, hence, twice as legible. Data was gathered from the Kuwait Central Statistics Bureau’s 2014 Annual Statistical Abstract, 51st edition as well as the interviews. The Select team found this mapping to be so representative of their project that it was then incorporated in the front cover of the book and translated into an animation that was used in the project’s press video.

Baitak Tower MEP Shelter One of Pace’s built office towers needed additional firefighting water tanks due to a change in land ownership, they would be placed on top of the ramp going down to basement parking. I designed the shelter to complement the tower built in the early 2000’s by taking motifs and reinterpreting them in a contemporary way. CD/PD - FD/TD stage

XII Team competition projects / Pace ‘15 & ’17

Below was a competition submission for a Kuwaiti corporation’s offices that wanted as much greenery as possible, we thought of putting the garden over the building and parking. To the right is a competition proposal for a mixed-use development in Bahrain (hotel, mall, apartments, boardwalk, yacht club), we experimented with the building-water edge and putting program on islands. CD/PD Stage. I was equally involved in all design and visual production stages of the projects.

XIII Commissioned design projects / Pace ‘15 & ’17

OBK Schools Pace was commissioned to design a complex of 3 schools; an American school, an Arabic school and a Bilingual school. My involvement was planning and facade design of the exterior facade and the courtyard lamellas, which coincided with the branding of each school, contemporary tertiary colour schemes were used to identify the character of each school and courtyard. Each school had a boys half and a girls half with their own sets of classrooms and facilities, so the plans were designed to foster that. My responsibilities were designing the plans, drawing plans, sections, elevations, wall sections, coordinating with rendering company, choosing contemporary colours to identify a character for each school, designing the multipurpose halls and outdoor playgrounds.

PARTNER: RAFAEL ALONSO, MOHAMED ELIAS, RICARDAS BLAZUKAS

New Messila Beach and New Eqaila Beach Pace was invited to compete for the design of two waterfront projects, one was a family water park with a private beach and day rental huts, and the other was a leisure sports-infused waterfront, each is an existing beach in different parts of Kuwait and each redevelopment would engage with different communities in the city. The family waterpark would have a long pier that stretches into the water with a hot air balloon at the end, the other would have basketballs and tennis courts inside the olymic-size swimming pool and they would host high-diving events such as red bull or the like. Work was divided equally, each team member has equal authorship.

XIII PARTNER: HOUSSAM FLAYHAN

XIV ASMEP+PM consultant projects / Pace ‘15-’17 Wafra Towers at Bahrain Bay Below is a winning RFP design by Wiel Arets Architect that was paired with Pace in order to deliver a mixed-use development on a new artificial island in Bahrain. It comprises of basement parking, ground floor retail and F&B, overground parking, offices, gym & spa, common rooms, podium-top garden, 1 - 3BR apartments, and rooftop pools.
