Primrose Primula acaulis, also called Primula vulgaris, is a very popular plant in early spring. ‘Primula’ is a a derivation from ‘Primus’ which means ‘first’ as the primula is a very early flowering plant, giving the first signs of spring. ‘Acaulis’ meaning ‘without stem’ the flowers of P. acaulis don’t stand on flower stems but flower directly above the leafs. ( The occasional tall stem sometimes seen is due to cross breeding with P elatior to increase flower size) The plant is moderately hardy and can, when planted in the garden, withstand mild winters to flower in early/mid Spring. Many consumers also like to take p. acaulis into their home where, in a cool and light environment they can flourish for up to 2 months. In a heated living room, they can have an average of three weeks flowering. Removing faded flowers promotes the creation of new flowers.

Appleblossom® With its fresh colours, the Appleblossom® has a very distinctive look, compared to the bold colours for which the acaulis are known for. This makes it very appealing to a substantial group of consumers.

Cottage® orange The beautiful terra cotta colours of its flowers, makes this a very popular p. acaulis ever since it has been introduced.

Wanda® The Wanda® mix is very fine and very long established variety with small strikingly unusual coloured blooms This series has dark leafs and is more hardy, more compact and later than the average acaulis.

Polyanthus In contrast to p. acaulis, the p. elatior and p. veris varieties flower on flower stems and are of course sold as ‘polyanthus’. These sorts are closely related to the primrose which are native to certain parts of Britain and continental Europe and are very winter hardy. Normally they will be available in February and March, but this depends on the weather conditions; with a warm winter they’ll become available sooner, with a sharp winter, they’ll flower later.

Inara® The p. elatior Inara® mix consists of a series of warm colours: gold, fire, scarlet and lime .

Mister Gold® Mister Silver® Mister Gold Lace® has small black flowers with a golden edge. Mister Silver Lace® has small black flowers with a silver edge. Both have an old fashioned Victorian look.

Lemon officinalis® The p. Lemon officinalis® although flowering on a short stem is very closely related to the wild primrose as seen in nature. Looking similar to the wild Oxlip with larger flowers than the much smaller bell like drooping flowers of Cowslip his makes it an absolute favourite primula of many gardeners.

Fleurette fire® De Fleurette fire® has curved flowers on a flower stem and as its name suggests, it has warm bicolored flamed flowers.

Little Queen® This strong garden primrose is a treat to look at. The Little Queen® produces new flowers throughout spring, making it very enjoyable until June.

Primula obconica P. obconica is very suitable as a house plant as this plant naturally grows in half shade, although indoors cool light conditions are best. With the right care, including a moist compost one can enjoy this beautiful Primula obconica for a long time and it will be very rewarding. When the flower gets older, its colour gets darker and more intense. Along with the younger flowers, this give a beautiful two tone effect! They can in fact be also used outside in sheltered positions close to houses if protected from hard frost and can in many seasons repeat flower outdoors from late March until late May. In fact you can see many of them planted in window boxes in London and their use could be more widespread in sheltered spots.

Touch Me®

P. Touch Me® has strong, bright green leafs and cheerful flowers in a really wide range of Spring like colours with a very long flowering period in the right conditions. The plant has a compact structure and the leaves no longer contain the irritating substance primin they once had which is one of Nature’s natural insect repellants. The variety has been bred to be primin free and that means that the troublesome rash now only known by earlier generations is a thing of the past. Available from November to mid April.
