KNEE INSTRUMENT CONCEPT & REDESIGN

PROFESSIONAL PROJECT

KEY CHALLENGES OF THE PROJECT:

- Concept design applied to functional products

- 3d printing application for casting

“ THE SHARK PLIERS”

THE BRIEF:

We needed a new pliers to extract our pins in surgery, we were looking for an optimization in its function and an important improvement image of the final product quality

THE CONCEPT: ITS NAME COME FROM THE IDEA OF THAT SHARKS HAS ONE OF THE STRONGEST BITE IN THE ANIMAL KINGDOM

SUBJECT: ADVANCED RESEARCH PROJECT A

KEY CHALLENGES OF THE PROJECT:

- Apply a complete HCD approach to a digital product in an innovative technology

- Develop and test a prototype in Augmented Reality and Unity

Check the project’s Demo Video!!!

User Research Personas

After analizing the previous assumptions of the project 3 different types of user were selected for user research.

Mainstream

Karim Interantional Student - 22 years old

„I find myself reading a book in nature, I like freedom to meet new people and live intensively.“

Extreme

Extremes = employees and professors vs. International students = Mainstreams

6 semi-structured interviews - 12 open questions

Findings - quotes

“ I would like to provide a good first impression to professors during my first couple of weeks”

“ I am interested on finding places that I have never been to, I would enjoy to explore the campus with some guidance or assistance”.

Personality traits:

Plays 2 sports in the univerity teams, extrovert and outgoing, believes in sharing his experiences with other people.

Educational level:

Studies logistics and is in the 3rd semester of his master of science.

Maria

University employee - 43 years old

“I look for stability and I organise my schedule based on my daily duties.“

Personality traits:

Somewhat old school, usually asks for directions, looks usually for facts before making decisions. Does volunteer work.

Educational level: Bachelor’s in social sciences.

Scenarios and User stories

User’s Flow

The user’s flow of interactions and the user experiece.

Among several, three different scenarios and their correspondent user stories were selected for prototyping.

User stories selected Storyboards

“Navigation for the first day of the semester.”

“ Exploration mode to discover new facilities on the campus”.

“ Engage with other users througth the use of the platform”.

Paper prototype Low fidelity testing

To perform a simulation of the HoloLens device, which allow us to test the concept fast without developing times. I developed a system with a plastic frame. This frame was combined with 2 different sizes of transparent sheets.

We used to test was an adaptation of the method “wizard of oz”

3 different roles was defined:

Facilitator:

Animator:

Machine:

He would guide the user during the extension of the test.

Will perform the animations of the screens.

Would provide the sound interaction of the system.

UI Detailed design

Exploration mode was selected as the scenario to develop the final iteration.

UI components

3 main UI components were designed for the final prototype inspired on the color palette, font and signs of the University. in order to keep consistency and improve usability to the users.

Augmented reality scenarios need to be designed in human scale sizes for a proper interacion
