2023 was another year of impactful developmentattheJavitsCenter.Asbusiness continued to improve in the event’s industry, wewerefortunatetoenjoythebenefitsofour expandedbuilding.

We’re also seeing economic gain from our sustainability efforts, with new “green” events taking place in increasing numbers.

North Javits allowed us to continue diversifying our event portfolio, particularly with events not previously held in New York. At the same time, existing events continued to rebound from the effects of Covid, ensuring our building was as busy as ever.

Our efforts to develop and operate a more sustainable building have been many. We published our “Path to Net Zero”, which outlined our road map to net zero emissions. We have improved our waste diversion rate, added 13 species of birds to the list of those seen on our green roofs, and harvested record amounts of honey from our busy Javits bees.

All About Growth

In 2023, Javits Center continued to make strides in our sustainability goals while delivering top-tier experiences for the more than 1.2 million guests that attended events this year. In addition to our anchor trade shows, Javits welcomed more than 35 new events in 2023 drawing business and employment opportunities to Manhattan’s West Side and the greater New York market.

Javits is ready – with six-blocks of accommodating infrastructure, an evolving business model, and the latest technology to create a seamless experience for clients and guests alike.

Our Pledge to Achieve Net Zero

We proudly published our Path to Net Zero, which outlined our plan toward achieving net zero by 2050. As a proud signatory of the Net Zero Carbon Events (NZCE) pledge, Javits proactively addresses nine of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) through our green infrastructure and energysaving operations.

STREAMLINED OPERATIONS

Demand Response

2023 marks the Javits Center’s tenth year participating in the Demand Response program with our energy consultants, NuEnergen. Demand Response is a critical part of the integrity of the broader New York City power grid and functions by streamlining power usage without the continued financial and environmental costs associated with building more transmission lines.

As one of the single largest contributors to electricity load reduction on days when there is a shortage of electricity supply, Javits Center’s Demand Response program is a critical part of the city’s sustainable future. While thousands of NYC buildings participate in the Demand response program, Javits Center has historically been amongst the the 10 largest in the entire city in terms of kWh that can be reduced at a single site.

For example, in summer 2023, the Javits Center committed to a 7,000 kWh reduction, equivalent to the hourly consumption of approximately 5,600 homes.

Tech-driven Truck Marshaling

Javits Center provides access to the most advanced truck marshaling system in the country for our customers. With the technology installed, Javits significantly reduces the pain points of loading in massive events in an urban area for both customers and the local community.

A central hub monitors truck traffic, allowing 200 or more trucks to stage, load, and unload 24 hours a day. Advanced booking is done during event registration via QR code that grants expedited clearance. Arrival is seamless with trucks having the ability to go directly to a marshaling spot or one of 80 dock assignments. Our in-ground sensors are another innovation streaming real-time dock status and dwell times.

A Safe and Secure Convention Center

Javits Center is dedicated to creating a safe and secure environment for everyone that enters our campus with unparalleled technology, training, resources and staffing. Javits Center maintains 2,400+ upgraded cameras with high-quality video streams featuring forensic zoom and AI support to assist our highly trained security experts.

In 2018, Javits was the first facility in New York State to work with the Critical Response Group, whichprovidesgeo-spatialgridingfortheentiresix-blockcampustoimproveonemergency responsetimes. When first responders arrive at Javits, these grid maps are in their vehicles making it possibleforthemtopromptlygettothecorrectlocation.Oursecuritystaffparticipates inongoingtrainingtobepreparedforawiderangeofscenarios, includingevacuations, and stayupdatedoncurrentalerts.JavitsCenterPublicSafety Department also works closely with law enforcement agencies in advance of and during our events to create the safest and most secure convention center in the country.

Lose Some thing?

If we find it, our customers get it back. The security team prides themselves on returning lost items to their rightful owners and creating an excellent customer experience even after they exit our doors. Our Command Center works to catalog and identify the owners of lost items from the hundreds of events at our facility this year – and all items that cannot be reunited with their owners are donated to charity. The New York Times even ran a feature on our Command Center in action at Comic Con providing a behind-the-scenes look of how items are reunited with their rightful owner.

Expr ess Kiosks

The strong resurgence of in-person events and meetings during the past year brought excitement to Javits Center – and a large quantity of contract staff. Javits streamlined the check-in process to an average of 45 seconds through convenient self-check in kiosks. This updated technology allowed the nearly 50,000 contract staff this year to save time on their way to work without sacrificing security.

A Spotlight on Lighting and A / V

We've elevated our show electric solutions with a dazzling focus on event lighting and A/V OurredesignedOverviewandPavilion spacesoffercustomizableturnkeysolutionstocreateimmersiveenvironmentsthatinstantly captureandreflectanevent’sessence.Withcutting-edge technology at its core, North Javits becomes the ultimate stage for any event.

Cultivated

Through collaboration with prestigious Levy restaurant and CxRA catering, Javits formed Cultivatedtoelevateourculinaryofferings.Together, we utilize the digital waste-tracking platform, Waste Not 2.0, to actively track the success of our culinary team’s tactics to prevent food waste and reduce our carbon impact. These tactics include strategically planning menus using produce from The Farm to get fresh ingredients without generating carbon emissions typically associated with food transport. Our latest sustainable practices and community support also include:

o Curated menus of which 45% of the ingredients were from our rooftop farm

o Donation of over 1.8 tons of food, equivalent to 3,167 meals

o Composting of 27.3 tons of organics collected from food production in the past year

These efforts avoided 16.8 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of four passenger vehicles driven for one year.

We are constantly monitoring the pulse of NYC to track transit alerts that could impact guests. Javits communicates these advisories with our customers and posts on our social and website to ensure we continue to provide exceptional service by engaging with our customers.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

Up on the Farm

The Farm at Javits is thriving through our NYS Grown and Certified farming operation in collaboration with Brooklyn Grange. With Good Agricultural Practices certification, our food safety practices are audited annually to confirm strict adherence to guidelines. In our chefs’ hands, these curated ingredients inspire delightful menus. Food waste is minimized through a digital waste-tracking platform ensuring the produce that is ready now is used first. Any leftover food is donated to the community through our JavitsCares food programs.

our JavitsCares program donated nearly 340,000 pounds of event materials and food to give back to the community. Hosting at the Javits Center means sustainability done right by using the latest innovations and best-in-class practices to create unforgettable events with minimalwasteandsignificant, sustainablecommunitybenefits.

Motivating fromWithin

Our sustainability initiatives begin with our staff. Javits Center encourages employees to support our sustainability goals by publishing a quarterly newsletter,TheSustainabilityScoop This internal publication highlights milestones related to our farm and waste management success and shares insightful biodiversity research

TasteNY

Javits is proud to be part of Taste NY, a delicious New York State initiative that encourages New Yorkers and visitors to consume food and beverage items grown, produced, or processed in New York State. The Taste NY bistro promotes local agriculture aligning with Javits Center’s mission to spur economic activity and job creation across the Empire State. State agencies are encouraged to purchase 30% of their annual food and food products from New York vendors, but Javits Center nearly doubles that with more than 50% of all culinary purchases deriving from New York State.

ABird’sLife

Our green roof offers an authentic habitat for a variety of birds. We enjoy hosting more than 65 species of birds, and, in season, nearly 200 nests of herring gulls. Javits proudly continues its ongoing partnership with NYC Bird Alliance (formerly, NYC Audubon) to be a safe haven for birds with our birdfriendly glass. We remain grateful to NYC Bird Alliance for their continued support of the Javits Center.

CheckItOut!

Javits Center is open to the community year-round! Guests can take a tour of Javits with one of our ambassadors to get a behind-the-scenes look at our campus, or attend a Lunch and Learn session, which includes private tastings featuring our farm-fresh produce.

TEAMWORK

The annual Employee Service Awards ensure we take time to acknowledge those who make Javits happen every day. Along with recognizing employees of the month, we also congratulate our long-term employees —some of whom have been Team Javits for 35+ years!
