LO SPOTLIGHT ELLIOT DE LA CRUZ Mortgage Loan Originator • 904-327-6449 NMLS #2290569 • elliotdelacruz@fibermortgage.com

About me:

I am from Colombia, and I enjoy being able to serve the Spanish-speaking community. I’m proud to be a Latino and enjoy serving our growing Hispanic community. I’m married to an incredible woman and the father to three young men and two adorable dogs. Traveling is one of my favorite things to do. Few things are as exciting to me as new sights, sounds, smells, and flavors. I’m the kind of person who enjoys a hot coffee during the day and a cold beer in the evenings. You can catch me at local sporting events (Go Jags/Sharks/Armada/Icemen/Jumbo Shrimp!) or find me hanging out with family and friends at one of the great local breweries or restaurants in our city. I also enjoy volunteering and interacting with the community. I love meeting new people and making friends. I believe in the power of a positive attitude and the warmth of a smile.

WISE WORDS

TO REMEMBER

Don’t Handle Your Mail Twice and Don’t ‘Should’ Yourself! By Kristin Lunsford

Have you ever had someone tell you something that just sticks with you? Words of wisdom can inspire and motivate and help lead us to our best selves. Growing up, my mom would tell my sisters and me, “Don’t handle your mail twice.” When I was younger, I did not fully appreciate this wisdom, but as I got older, I could often hear my mom’s voice in my head whenever I was like, oh, I will just do this later. The times I ignored that voice often led me to spend more time trying to locate where something was that did eventually need my attention, to call someone or email them or pay a bill. I spent more time planning to complete that task rather than if I had just simply done it in the first place. Procrastination really can be the enemy of success. Recently, my husband, Brian, and I went on a business trip, and one night the leader of the group spoke to us and said, “Don’t Should Yourself!” While this simple sentence does sound silly, it is a pretty powerful statement. How often do we say, “I should read that book, or call that person”? Why the should? Change that “should” to “will” and just do it. I often reflect back to that leader’s wise words when I am procrastinating about doing something. It makes me stop and think, why am I putting this off until the future? Is there fear or intimidation holding me back? Taking those moments to stop and think about why I am not completing that task at the moment helps me prioritize what really is important and what I want to prioritize and put my attention toward. It also helps me recognize my fears and insecurities that are holding me back.

Making Jacksonville Home After graduating from Florida Gulf Coast University with a degree in music performance in 2015, Hank Pellegrino began to plan his next steps. He had all intentions of becoming a professional musician and took a year off to prepare for graduate school auditions. In the meantime, he worked as a teacher and violinist. “Being that I was a musician, I needed a second job because we all know how well music pays,” Hank quips. One of Hank’s best friends had started working in the moving industry, and he lined Hank up with an interview. Hank headed in to meet the owner, who was skeptical about bringing Hank on. “I’m not exactly built like your typical mover,” Hank continues with a laugh. “I’m 5’8”, 160 lbs. soaking wet. But my buddy gave me a great recommendation for my work ethic and dependability, and I was hired.” Hank began working as a mover just two days a week. As he settled into his role, he realized there was more opportunity in moving than he initially realized. “A few months in, the owner explained to me that he had a network of moving companies that were locally owned and operated. His goal was to be different — to have a local presence, not a franchise, with an owner at each location that is truly a part of the community,” Hank reflects. “That really interested me. The way he spoke about it — I remember coming home that night after a long move saying, ‘If I ever had an opportunity like that, I would take it because it sounds amazing, the opportunity to be a business owner and impact your community.’”

In early 2017, Hank was preparing for a trip to New England to audition at several graduate schools. That’s when he got a message that would forever reshape his professional life.

BUILDING A BUSINESS

“I got a message saying they wanted to promote someone to management with the opportunity to start and own their own moving company. I went for a meeting with the general manager, and I was all-in.”

WHETHER IT’S INDUSTRY VETS OR NEW MOVERS, WE’RE BRINGING ON THE BEST OF THE BEST.

FUN FACT In his free time, Hank fences competitively. “Gets my mind off work, for sure. There’s nothing like charging at somebody with a sword,” he laughs.

Hank canceled his graduate school auditions and promptly began his new role in management. Over the next year and a half, he learned the ins and outs of the business from a management perspective, and by summer 2018, he was ready to open his own business. Hank and his wife, Annamaria, picked up their lives, moved to Jacksonville from Cape Coral, Florida, and opened Jaguar Moving in July 2018. Perhaps the most relevant characteristic of Jaguar Moving is its commitment to the community. Hank, along with Annamaria, who helps with administrative work for the company, has embraced Jacksonville with open arms. Their family has grown during their time here, too. They now have two young children, Julia (3) and Judd (1), and hope to grow their family in the coming years. Hank and Annamaria just recently went under contract for their first home.

“We wanted to go somewhere different and start our own story,” Hank reflects. “And Jacksonville was at the top of our list.” IT’S ALL ABOUT COMMUNITY

At Jaguar Moving, everything starts with the team. Hank has prioritized his team by paying them industry-best salaries, which has led to better recruiting and higher retention. That gives him one of the area’s most experienced and well-rounded teams.

“We don’t see ourselves moving away from Jacksonville. We’re settling our roots here,” Annamaria says.

“Whether it’s industry vets or new movers, we’re bringing on the best of the best,” Hank says.

“We live here. We love it here,” Hank adds. “Family is the most important thing outside work. That’s why we do what we do.”

Jaguar Moving offers customized moving plans, so whether a client is looking for basic moving support or a turnkey solution, they only pay for the services they receive.

He does what is necessary; he’s even helped with expenses, like appraisal fees, to help clients. “Yes, I know REALTORS® shouldn’t do that,” he says. “But I’ve been in their shoes. It’s a relationship. These people sacrifice everything every day. They’re about to deploy… uproot their lives again.”

MAURICE M U R P H Y From Navy Lieutenant Commander to REALTOR® When leaving the Navy after serving for 24 years throughout 25 countries and earning two degrees (a bachelor’s and a master’s), Lieutenant Commander Maurice Murphy knew he wanted his next job to offer flexibility. “I didn’t want a corporate job initially,” Maurice shares. “I wanted a job that didn’t require me to wake up at the same time every day. One where I called the shots and had limitless earning potential. Real estate gave me that.” So, in August 2019, Lieutenant Commander Murphy started a career as a REALTOR®. Now he’s achieving his civilian goals. Speaking the Language

However, leaving the military doesn’t mean Maurice left his military family behind. No, today, he serves them in a different way. Many of his clients are veterans and active-duty military. 18 • April 2022

Maurice takes care of the details “they shouldn’t have to worry about,” to give them one less concern as they manage the stress of moving to another new place, often quickly, sometimes with little advance notice.

“I understand the sacrifice our military persons and their families make every day,” he says. Maurice lived the life of being in uniform. He and his family moved around quite a bit during his years of military service, so he understands the reality of our sailors’, soldiers’, and their families’ lives and their relocation needs.

In addition to his experience as a sailor, when asked what sets him apart from other REALTORS®, he believes it’s his disciplined approach. It’s an approach fueled by a

So it’s not a surprise that most of his clients are relocating sailors, soldiers, and their families. Either they’re coming to the Jacksonville area or leaving the state or the country for their next assignment. “I speak the language,” he says. Maurice knows the way of life of those in uniform, and he’s prepared to make their next move easier. A Servant Leader

Maurice sees himself as a servant leader. In fact, he says being a servant leader is the most fulfilling aspect of his work. It’s his purpose. “I’m ready to go the extra mile for my @realproducers

bachelor’s degree in logistics from Auburn University and a master’s degree in Military Operational Art and Science Studies from the Air Command Staff College combined with a long, successful military career.

Making Jacksonville Home

Maurice and his wife, Annetter, and their two daughters, Ashlan (24) and Layla (19), have lived in Jacksonville off and on throughout his career. Ashlan was born while he was deployed, which was a pivotal moment in his life—being away “completely changed my mindset about how my family sacrificed so much for me during my career. Now I make sure to spend every moment possible with them. We love to go on family trips and enjoy the great local restaurants here in Northeast Florida,” he says.

Maurice Murphy served 24 years in the United States Navy.

NOW SERVICING ALL OF FLORIDA Residential • Commercial • Developer • Lender

While this sailor turned REALTOR® has traveled the globe–he has visited every continent except Australia–”I haven’t been to many cities in the U.S.,” he says. But he is working on adding new domestic trips to his calendar. Maurice and Annetter have visited San Diego and Las Vegas since his military career ended, and they plan to add more places soon. So, does he still wake up at the same time every day, like when he was in the military? “Well…yes. I try to get to the gym every morning,” he answers. Some habits live on, like discipline, fitness, and hard work, which have propelled him to the Rising Star spot this month.

3 Feet from Gold - Napoleon Hill Who Moved My Cheese Eat the Frog - Brian Tracy My favorite is 3 Feet from Gold. This short story resonates with me big time. It’s a story during the gold rush of a young man mining for gold for months. Well, he decided to quit. He sold all of his machinery to a “junk man” for a couple of hundred dollars. This “junk man” called in a mining engineer to look at the mine. With his council, he was able to find out that the gold would be found just 3 feet from where the previous miner had stopped and quit. The moral of the story: never give up. Too many people decide to give up right before they get a chance to experience a breakthrough... because it gets TOO hard. A Not-So Stressful Move A September 20, 2020 survey from the New York Post asked 1,000 Americans what they thought the most stressful event in life was. Forty-five percent of the respondents said moving was the most stressful event they’d experienced in the three years prior to the survey. Moving in and of itself is a challenge, but when you are moving internationally — across the U.S. or to a state you’ve never even visited before — moving becomes a new level of difficulty. Many American military men and women know this stressor all too well, so it helps to use a REALTOR® who personally understands the various obstacles a military family might face as they transition.

CHANCE

As a wife of a naval officer serving at Naval Station Mayport, Allison Chance of Anchored Real Estate Group has made eight moves in the last ten years. None of them were easy, and a couple of them presented challenges she never anticipated.

top producer By Jennifer Watson Photos by Renee Parenteau

@realproducers

Allison attended the University of Florida, where she expected to make a career in wedding and event planning. As such, she spent her last semester of college completing an internship with a catering company. “I learned so much about myself, the power of a strong work ethic, and simply working with others,” Allison recalls. Fate had different plans for her, though. While she and her husband were stationed in Hawaii, Allison decided to follow in the footsteps of her older sister, who is a commercial real estate broker in Miami. With a new baby girl added to her family, a real estate career seemed like the perfect way to combine Allison’s people and organizational skills with her desire to be present with her family.

So, Allison set to work on her real estate license with a baby in one arm and her laptop in the other, and by the time she and her husband returned to Florida in 2015, she was ready to hit the ground running. She went to work right away with a brokerage and enjoyed early success in her new career. Photo credit: Sarah Kappes Photography

I would like to continue to grow my team and continue to inspire women, especially fellow military spouses, to chase their dreams, whether big or small or in the workplace or at home.

Allison found herself not only missing the Vitamin D in Florida but also the comforts of a place she knew as home. She was presented with a choice: continue with real estate or press pause on her career for the time being. “My goal was always to continue my career in real estate, no matter how tough it was to start over,” says Allison. “I worked tirelessly on obtaining my California license, and meanwhile, I found out I was expecting my second child.” “There were so many times I wanted to quit. I constantly doubted myself and my ability to be successful in a new market and raise two children,” Allison says. With the true spirit of a military spouse, Allison found the courage to squash her fears and make the best of the situation in which she found herself.

few thousand phone calls and leave lots of messages, and telling everyone that ‘my mom sells houses,’” smiles Allison.

“My experience in California, and every time we have relocated, has given me strength to never give up,” Allison says. “I learned so much working in a vastly different real estate market, and it has definitely helped me beyond measure in growing my business.”

Allison sets an example of hard work and tenacity for her children, but she also works hard to demonstrate a healthy work-life balance. “Yoga is my happy place,” Allison says. “In a business that is so demanding and stressful, it is truly my way to disconnect, meditate, pray, and get in a workout.”

“I am a big believer that out of the uncomfortable comes beautiful things,” she says. An Expert in Relocation

With Allison’s experience in moving back and forth across the country several times, she is a reliable resource for military families relocating to the Jacksonville area.

“Out of the uncomfortable comes beautiful things.”

However, in 2017, Allison would be thrown a curveball she wasn’t expecting: a move across the country to Northern California so that her husband, Kyle, could complete his master’s degree at the Naval Postgraduate School. “At the time, I had completely built my real estate business in Jacksonville. We were connected and rooted in the community, and all was well,” Allison says. “Leaving Jacksonville was one of the hardest things. Not only did we move across the country, away from family, but we also left the Florida sunshine for the cold and dreary weather in Northern California.”

“We work with many families who purchase their home sight unseen,” says Allison. “Sometimes a military family can’t physically make a trip to Florida from Japan or Spain, or COVID restrictions make travel complicated… they put all their trust in us, and that is a big responsibility that we do not take lightly.” Allison often uses technology to “show” homes to families outside the area. She relies on trusted partners, including lenders and home inspectors, who understand the challenges a buyer faces by not physically being in Jacksonville. “For most of our buyers and sellers, we are truly helping them with an entire life relocation. Finding doctors, babysitters, a new church, groups to get connected with…,” says Allison. “As a military spouse myself, I understand firsthand the struggles and stress that go along with a move. Throw in a few kids and pets, too, and you are exhausted before the first box is packed.”

Allison and her team at Anchored Real Estate Group are committed to excellence and total satisfaction. Whether the move is big or small, they want their clients to have a pleasant buying or selling experience that is as stress-free as possible. Their mission is: Founded in Excellence. Grounded in Service. “My hope, as we grow, is that we never lose sight of this,” Allison says. “While we will never be perfect, we do strive for perfection!” Her expertise and experience are paying off: last year, her team completed 83 transactions for a total of $31.5 million. Bringing The Family Together

Allison founded Anchored Real Estate Group in September 2021, and her children, Charlotte and Hux, along with her husband Kyle, make her real estate business a family affair. “My family is truly part of my business, and my children love sporting their Anchored Real Estate Group t-shirts and swag, reciting my phone number because they have heard me make a realproducersmag.com

In addition to unwinding with yoga, Allison and her family enjoy attending church at Eleven22, supporting Gator football in Gainesville, frequenting all of the delicious restaurants Jacksonville has to offer, and spending their weekends at Atlantic Beach Country Club, where they love to golf and let the kids swim and enjoy the Florida sunshine. Future Plans

Allison doesn’t have any plans to slow down on helping individuals and families find their perfect homes in the Jacksonville area. With a heart for relocating military men and women and their families, as well as for those closer to the Jacksonville area, she expects to continue working toward increased professional success while staying present as her children continue to grow. “I would like to continue to grow my team and continue to inspire women, especially fellow military spouses, to chase their dreams, whether big or small or in the workplace or at home,” says Allison. “I personally struggle with doubting that I am enough or that I am doing enough. Erasing this stigma in my own mind and for other working women, especially moms, is so important to me.” Jacksonville Real Producers • 29

JONATHAN giving back

were rampant.” While he was on this mission trip, someone broke into his house back home and stole everything. “I remember crossing over the border with a weight of selfpity knowing I had lost a job I was very proud of and my house being burglarized and every possession I had stolen.”

HUMILITY AND HUMANITY

“I went to college on a fluke,” he admits. “Once I got there, I delivered pizzas for 30-40 hours a week while taking a 20–22 hour course load to work my way through college.” “Eventually, after two years, I became burned out and took a break from school and started working full-time at various jobs. I worked at a factory rebuilding broken torque converters on the overnight shift for an extra .25 cents an hour.”

business. Afterward, he decided to move to Florida, where a coin toss on the way there decided that he would go to Jacksonville.

Breaking the Cycle

Then Jonathan had an epiphany. “I looked around me, and I saw all the older people working there who were simply making a paycheck and barely getting by. I knew I could never support a family or break the cycle of poverty that I lived in if I kept going down this track. I turned off my machine and walked over to the foreman and told him, ‘If I don’t leave right now, I will be here the rest of my life.’”

Over the next few years, Jonathan worked in various roles. He finished his college education at Southwest Missouri State with a bachelor’s in

After a slew of events — which even included a political career — Jonathan met his now-wife, who invited him on a mission trip to serve orphanages in Mexico. Seeing Beyond Self

“It was 2009, and I had asked for time off to go on my first trip and instead was laid off from my job,” he shares. “Since I no longer had a job, I was free to go on the mission trip where we flew into Phoenix and drove across the border into one of the worst parts of Mexico where human trafficking and drugs

It was here during his trip that Jonathan had another epiphany. “I quickly realized that those kids didn’t need their dorm painted, but they simply needed a hug and attention from someone who cared for them. God broke my heart on that trip and humbled me in a way that I could never have been humbled otherwise. I gained a love for these kids and for the needs that they had.” “Coming back from Mexico, I returned to an empty house, and I was unemployed. My self-pity had disappeared, though, and it was replaced with the guilt I had for placing my value as a person in my material things.” Jonathan found himself in real estate in 2010, and he married his wife in 2015. Both hoped for a large family but were unsuccessful in having children. “My wife and I remembered the passion we had for the kids we worked with together in Mexico, and we decided to sign up to be foster parents.”

Becoming a Foster Parent

“Our first placement was a little girl named Sophia. She was born with drug addiction, and we visited her in the ICU for 21 days before we took her home for the first time. We had her in our home for four months until the mother found a guy 20 years older than her to claim he was the father, and without a paternity test, DCF placed the baby with him.” “This broke us. I have never cried as hard as I did the night I had to drive and deliver Sophia to that man we all knew was posing as the father.” After that, Jonathan and his wife nearly quit foster care, but a new opportunity gave them the determination to try again. “We adopted Annie on her 1-year birthday.” Around this time, Jonathan’s wife quit her corporate job to focus on being a full-time mother, as well as to run

the books for their two businesses. “The moment we were not required to keep her in daycare by DCF, I started taking Annie with me everywhere to show houses and work and even put her on the back of my business card as my ‘Director of Client Relations.’” “We don’t want to admit it, but even here in Jacksonville, there are people who live in squalor in third world conditions. Again, God humbled me and caused me to realize that I grew up in some of the same poverty conditions that many of these kids who enter foster care grow up in.” Jonathan and his wife have had 11 foster children come through their home in the last five years. “Although it isn’t easy, it is definitely worth it,” says Jonathan. However, they have taken a break from foster care for this year as Jonathan’s parents have moved into their home.

Jonathan Daugherty brings this same humility into his business with all his clients. “We are blessed to have a profession where we can actually do good and help people,” he reminds his peers. Although real estate is his primary focus, he also manages rental properties. “I actively encourage my tenants not to be tenants anymore and instead invest in themselves. I help put them through a credit-building program with a lender I have a relationship with and have helped many of my tenants become homeowners and invest in themselves instead of paying rent.”
