Making Your Personality Shine By Zachary Cohen | Photos By Scott Golmic

When a real estate agent walks into Renee Parenteau’s studio for headshots and branding photos, they often show up self-conscious, unsure, and even anxious. Luckily for them, Renee has perfected the art of helping agents feel at ease — and then delivering a final product that fully showcases their presence and personality. “I not only make people look great in photos, but I capture their true essence,” Renee says proudly. “When I shoot REALTORS®, their picture needs to communicate to the viewer as if they are standing in front of them. It needs to communicate their personality. It’s not just about making them look good. The personality needs to pop off the page and connect with the viewer, and that’s what I’m known for.”

FROM LOS ANGELES TO JACKSONVILLE Renee was born and raised on the West Coast, splitting her time between Los Angeles and Seattle. Her passion for the arts dates back to her days as a middle schooler. “I won a poster contest in middle school for Be Kind to Animals Week. I painted a poster and won the state award, and I identified as an artist from that moment forward,” Renee recalls with a laugh.

partner spotlight

During this time, Renee also got her first taste of photography. As she worked side-by-side with photographers, she began to take an interest in that side of the business. Eventually, she returned to school to study photography and shift her career. Renee landed in Jacksonville in 2007, the same year she launched Renee Parenteau Photography. “We had friends here, and I loved that it had a river, the beach, and great restaurants. It had a small-town feel. I love how people are connected and support each other, but it’s big enough with a lot of business and a lot going on.”

As she reached adulthood, Renee settled down in Los Angeles, where she made a name for herself as a celebrity makeup artist. Her clients included Kenny Chesney, Denzel Washington, Selena Gomez, Trisha Yearwood, Ryan Lochte, Chelsea Handler, Sergio Garcia, Deion Sanders, and Roberta Flack. Her work graced the covers of publications like People Magazine, Runner’s World, and The New York Times Magazine, and her corporate clients have included Boeing, Microsoft, Levi’s, T-Mobile, Nike, and Univision.

A MASTER OF HER CRAFT Renee has been thriving in Jacksonville for over 15 years now. She runs her business out of a studio in historic Springfield, which is equipped with various spots to shoot with natural lighting, indoor and outdoor locations, and varied architectural features. Renee is proud to have made a name for herself as a photographer who is able to capture the true personality of her clients. She also continues to offer makeup services — an added bonus for anyone who wants to look their best for their photoshoot. “I shoot like a makeup artist. I like to make everyone look good,” Renee shares. “Often, people have a lot of anxiety, so it’s helpful to sit and do their makeup

first. We can sit and talk. I talk to them through what inspires them, what their passions are, and what their happy place is so I can get that genuine smile. I help them get confident in the process.” Whether she’s doing someone’s makeup or taking their photos, Renee’s goal is the same: to make the person in front of her feel like a celebrity. “ I’m known to make people look and feel great,” Renee closes. “I really take the time to connect with people and make them really stand out in an industry where the image matters to clients.” For more information, visit reneeparenteauphoto.com.

IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT MAKING THEM LOOK GOOD. The personality needs to pop off the page and connect with the viewer, and that’s what I'm known for.

FUN FACT Renee has college degrees in Spanish and Philosophy. She’s also fluent in Spanish and French.

THE ROAD HOME

FLORENZ When we sat down with Shelby Florenz in late 2021, she was a rising star in the Jacksonville real estate market. Just over two years later, Shelby has continued her ascent, becoming one of Jacksonville’s best REALTORS®. She has capitalized on her early momentum to create one of the most unique and authentic real estate businesses in town.

By Zachary Cohen | Photos By Renee Parenteau

Shelby’s continued rise has coincided with her move to Compass; after five years with Sotheby’s International Real Estate, she has spent the last two with Compass, and the results have been nothing short of impressive; Shelby has closed over $20 million for three straight years, and was ranked 2022’s #22 highest-producing individual agent in Northeast Florida by the Jacksonville Business Journal. “What Compass was offering and the opportunity that came from moving to the brokerage was huge. They are tech leaders and have a leg up on advertising,” Shelby shares. “I made the jump, and it’s been awesome.” While Shelby’s brokerage has changed, her approach hasn’t. She prides herself on her authenticity, trustworthiness, and drive to make those around her happy. She’s out to enjoy her success in business and life — and it shows.

FINDING HOME Shelby was born and raised in Bozeman, Montana. She graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a degree in sports management and a minor in civic engagement and leadership in 2012. After earning her degree, she moved across the country to Florida, where she began her professional life working for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Shelby spent a year with the Buccaneers before making a small hop to St. Petersburg to work in community relations for the Tampa Bay Rays. Her connections to former Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley eventually brought her north to Jacksonville. Shelby and her husband Billy have 2 sons, Callahan and JoJo.

I MADE THE JUMP, AND IT'S BEEN AWESOME.

Shelby’s role as Gus and his wife Michaelas’ assistant shifted into a more personal role caring for the Bradley children. She became like family — so much so that when Gus was let go in 2016, he trusted her to look over his Jacksonville real estate. “By that time, I’d fallen in love with Jacksonville,” Shelby reflects. “I had met my husband, and I knew I wanted to stay here. So rather than moving out to California with Gus and his family, I decided to get my real estate license and property manage the homes of several former Jaguars coaches,” Shelby offers.

BECOMING AN AGENT As soon as Shelby dipped her toes into the real estate world, she was hooked. Although she initially thought

she’d focus on property management, her attention quickly shifted toward real estate sales. Shelby was fortunate to have grown a strong network, which included some high-profile members of the Jacksonville community. She quickly leveraged those referrals into her first clients and a thriving sales business. “I got great listings and clients quickly because the Jaguars coaching circle was revolving, and a lot of them called me for multi-million dollar properties. It was unbelievable,” Shelby continues. Shelby quickly earned her clients’ trust with a penchant for hard work and a commitment to authenticity. She also learned quickly from those around her, positioning herself as a steadfast professional despite her youth.

Shelby was thrilled to help Marissa and Trevor Lawrence find their home in Jacksonville.

“Starting at First Coast Sothebys, a luxury brand at 26 years old, I was really young for my office. I was watching $5 million deals go down, and everyone was so sharp and professional. I realized this was what I wanted to do and how I wanted to be in the business. There was no other way to run my business other than top-notch.”

KIND AND HAPPY While Shelby is proud of her real estate success, it’s not the only thing that brings her joy. She and her husband, Billy, have two young sons, Callahan (4) and JoJo (2). “The boys and my husband are my world,” Shelby beams. “I’m obsessed with being a mom. It’s the greatest thing ever.” Shelby and her family spend a lot of time at the beach, exploring Jacksonville, and hanging out with friends. She aspires to be a great mom and wife, a good friend, and someone who treats everyone around her kindly. “My future is simple,” Shelby shares. “I want to grow my business even more while keeping a great balance in life. I want to continue to enjoy it, be present with my kids, and enjoy every day, every moment in work and life.”

THE PEOPLE’S REALTOR®

life-changing experience that helped him define what kind of man he wanted to become.

By Ruth Gnirk Photos by Scott Golmic

“The path I had been on was not leading to success,” recalls Derrick, “and I realized that it never would. I learned that even ‘small’ choices can have long-term consequences. I also learned how to take responsibility for myself. My relationship with God started then, and I did an entire 180-degree turn. I would not be the man I am today without that event happening. I owe so much to first and foremost to Jesus, and then to the amazing family that He blessed me with.”

“If people only remember one thing about me, let it be my passion and purpose to help others,” says REALTOR® and serial entrepreneur Derrick Richardson. “Real estate is what I do, but giving back to people is who I am.” Jacksonville native Derrick Richardson has learned invaluable lessons from every experience in life, even the difficult ones. Derrick is the youngest of four children. His father, a minister, was very diligent and inspired Derrick’s work ethic. His mother’s courage in the face of health issues taught Derrick to be willing to take risks on himself.

Derrick rising star

RICHARDSON

“Some would say that my siblings and I grew up financially challenged,” Derrick muses. “But the way I recall it is that our parents taught us to have a heart for others, even when we didn’t have a lot. We were raised not only to survive but to love. I learned to find value in myself and in others, and to try to leave others better than they were before we met.” FROM SURVIVING TO STRIVING

Shortly after graduating from Forrest High School (now known as Westside High), Derrick had a

30 • January 2024

@realproducers

Derrick didn’t have to think too hard to decide on his college major. He capitalized on his childhood love of the written word. He had been passionate about reading and writing poetry for years, and found great release in expressing his hopes and thoughts in various written forms. In 2014, Derrick graduated magna cum laude from University of North Florida, earning a degree in communication with an emphasis in public relations. He worked a corporate job for a short time that was mentally stimulating but not fulfilling. Derrick wanted to help people in meaningful ways and to be able to connect to those he was serving. He found greater satisfaction when he began working for Wounded Warrior Project in the spring of 2015. After earning his master’s in Strategic Communication from Purdue University in 2016, Derrick worked as a Wounded Warrior Project marketing specialist. A year later he was offered a position as a senior marketing specialist at EverBank.

Before 2020 was over, Derrick had completed a nonprofit management certification program from UNF. After working for employers like the Florida Department of Transportation and FIS Global, he dove into real estate full-time. INVESTING IN PEOPLE

Inspired by a challenge issued to him by a 20-year real estate veteran, Derrick invests in people on a personal level. He’s had the same phone number since he was 16 so that people always know how to reach him. He intentionally touches base with current customers as well as those he has recently served in real estate and marketing. And he strives to make himself readily available to mentees, community members, and his church family. “I see myself as a community servant, helping others accomplish their dreams with peace of mind,” Derrick reflects. “I cannot truly succeed until I help others succeed. For me, success is not about social media likes or buying leads. It is about establishing a trust-based relationship with a person and their family, and then serving them for generations.” Derrick is also intentional about investing in himself and his business. He sets aside time for family and community service, and he distinguishes between work hours and home time. He tries to continuously maintain the attitude of a student, keeping an open mind and a humble heart. Derrick does not compare himself with others in real estate, marketing, or life in general. He simply competes with himself to be a better person and a more skilled professional each day.

PASSION + PURPOSE

Although he appreciated his corporate marketing job, Derrick wanted to provide more personalized service, tailored to each client’s goals. In 2017, he branched out as a professional freelancer, providing marketing, public relations, and communication services, as well as web design and creation. By 2018, Derrick had saved enough to purchase his first home. He became completely intrigued by the process and realized that becoming involved in the real estate industry would allow him to accomplish meaningful work that impacted generations. Derrick began taking real estate classes at night in late 2019, and by February 2020 he had passed the exams and was a licensed REALTOR®. Within the next month, Derrick had joined United Real Estate Gallery. Two months after becoming a REALTOR®, Derrick completed his first closing and created a property concierge and management company called Richardson Management Services.

BUILDING UP THE COMMUNITY

Derrick has been actively giving back to the community for over a decade. Each month he is involved in some type of community give-back event through local and national non-profit organizations as well as through his church, where he serves as community outreach director. Since becoming a REALTOR®, Derrick has been organizing and leading homebuyer workshops throughout the year, and freely sharing market insights on Buzz TV.

When Derrick is not serving the community, he and his family enjoy spending quality time together building memories, especially

while traveling. He also enjoys live music, going out to eat, watching sports and movies, and working out. He is looking forward to marrying his fiancee in March of 2024. “As a person who is outgoing, organized, detail-oriented, and hard-working, real estate is the perfect fit for me,” Derrick shares. “I can operate in my strengths

and provide for my family by helping other families define and accomplish their dreams. Plus, I have unlimited earning potential. But the best part is that I can combine my life-long passion for people, my educational background, and my personality to fulfill my purpose in life. You do not have to be rich to help others, you just need to have a heart for it. I have always loved helping people, and I am glad to be The People’s REALTOR®.”

‘‘

He enjoys mentoring and coaching agents, as well as business entrepreneurs, and is formulating plans for starting his own community-focused non-profit organization as well. Derrick also has some visionary ideas of how his real estate business can propel him into additional endeavors.

question of the month

3. Foster a deeper faith and strengthen my relationship with God through regular spiritual practices and reflections. 4. Embrace boldness in various aspects of life, particularly in decision-making and expressing my thoughts and ideas. 5. Aim to be featured on the cover of Jax Real Producers, marking a significant achievement in my real estate career for the past 16 years.

What are your goals for 2024?

ALLISON CHANCE Anchored Real Estate Group

For 2024, I hope to continue to grow my brokerage, but also focus on my family and being present for them. With a 9-year-old; 5-year-old, the days are flying by and I don’t want to look back and regret missing out on all of the little moments! I would also like to continue giving back to local community organizations that I feel passionately about.

My 2024 goals are to finally become a mom after years of infertility and to start a real estate team! CRYSTAL DUCKWORTH Crystal Clear Realty

Additionally, I aim to contribute to society by giving back to my community through various philanthropic endeavors. LAURA GRAHAM & TEAM Coldwell Banker Vanguard Realty

Our goal for 2024 is to go back to the basics. To connect with our past customers and sphere on a personal level and remind them how much we care for and appreciate them. We know that it’s going to be a great year and we are very much looking forward to serving our customers! NIKKI-LYN HOLM Herron Real Estate

My personal goal is to reach my optimal fitness goals by the end of the second quarter! Or sooner.

BRIT O’DONOGHUE Landmark Title

So many goals for 2024! Just trying to stay afloat in this crazy market. 2024 will be my first year as a solo agent. So I’m excited for that. Other goals: More yoga…More patience…More presence.

“Focus”, which is the word I am leaning toward being my word of 2024. Between that one and “Action”. Either way, I want that to be my goal. Word setting has been a great practice of mine, I took a sabbatical in December in nature, and think/pray about what I want for the next year. A word will start it all both professionally and personally. This year’s word was “Intentional” and I tried to live there personally, professionally, and spiritually in all decisions big and small.

Transition from solo operator to employer by hiring a team of photographers that continue to produce high-quality listing media and provide exceptional customer service! Transition from a family of three to a family of four as we welcome our second child into the world!

1. Deepen involvement in church ministries to strengthen my connection with the community and spiritual growth. 2. Elevate my real estate business, surpassing the achievements of the previous years through strategic initiatives and client satisfaction. @realproducers

60-day family trip exploring Ireland, Spain, and France. Writing that focuses on success habits and life disciplines built on the Saving Blood of Jesus. JOY DOYLE Hover Girl Properties

My goal is simple - continue to do the right thing. Love the unlovable and forgive anyone who has intentionally hurt me. I recognize I sit in a HOT seat with the enemy and I’m consistently misrepresented but it comes with the territory of loving the Lord with all heart soul and mind and a husband in eldership at the fastest growing church in America. CARA POTTER Future Home Loans

My goal for 2024 would be to make more connections - personally and professionally and to be more of an impact in our community! GIGI URBANSKI Pickett Home Advisors

PRESIDENT: FROM THE DESK OF THE

by Gia Arvin, 2024 President of Florida Realtors®

Real Producers, We enter 2024 at a time when our industry is facing challenges, however, successful professionals turn all challenges into opportunities. At Florida Realtors® we are excited to begin this year reminding ourselves that REALTORS® in Florida enjoy the unique advantage of a state full of hometowns where new homeowners join our communities every day. Our successes begin and end at home, and our success is just that: homegrown. Florida Realtors® is proud to advance our hometowns through advocacy, professionalism and ensuring that everyone has a place in our industry. Advocacy is at the heart of what makes our industry successful, behind every successful real estate transaction are decades upon decades of critical advocacy work that makes each deal possible. REALTORS® advocacy efforts are also essential in blocking harmful laws and other measures that could threaten our profession, our livelihood and the growth of our communities. As REALTORS®, we understand the need to protect our businesses but also cherish the importance of our relationships with each other. We intentionally cooperate with our competitors and to do so successfully, we must adhere to our Code of Ethics and protect the professional environment we work together in.

As your President, I am dedicated to promoting products and tools to increase our efforts as professionals. Recently, this magazine featured an introduction to a new product available to ALL REALTORS®: Forewarn. Forewarn is an intuitive, easy-to-use identity verification and risk assessment tool designed to enhance your safety. To take advantage of this new FREE product just visit Floridarealtors.org. As we celebrate our hometowns we also remind ourselves that our real estate story does not end at our borders. The appeal of owning a piece of paradise extends far beyond. According to the National Association of REALTORS’® 2023 Profile of International Transactions in the US, 23% of all foreign buyers purchased property in Florida. We are a global family and I am proud to lead an inclusive environment that includes all of our practitioners, whether residential or commercial. I encourage anyone with questions to reach out to us and let us know how we can further your business. Individually we are one voice – together we are a strong power of influence and progress.
