“It’s just a change in asthetics!”
Discusses a MoMA Show on Ileana Sonnabend
Lisa Cooley stood for a moment, a crowd of museumgoers swarming around her, looking at a black-and-white photograph of Jasper Johns paintings installed at the Galerie Ileana Sonnabend in Paris in 1962. But when she spoke, it was not about the quality of the work displayed, the era in which it was made or even about the artist who created it.

“While we celebrate Sonnabend for the uniqueness of her achievements,” she wrote, “it is important to realize that she epitomizes an essential figure within the history of modern art: the woman art dealer.”
There’s just more space around things.”
2014 SPRING EDITION
Ms. Cooley was at the Museum of Modern Art, taking in “Ambassador for the New,” a show dedicated to the work of Ms. Sonnabend, a legendary figure in the art world and a woman who, like Ms. Cooley, put her name on her own business.

assemblage sculptures, the breadth of her achievement— which includes not only threedimensional work but also paintings, photographs, collages, drawings, artist’s books, films, and public sculptures—is still largely unknown in this country. Many of the nearly 150 objects in the exhibition are on view in the United States for the first time.

mid-1970s, but over the last decade a new generation has been inspired by her radical inventiveness. The past 10 years have been particularly productive for Genzken, who, with a new language of found objects and collage, has created several bodies of work that have redefined assemblage for a new era. These groups of sculptures range from smaller, dioramalike works to room-filling installations.
