BALLFIELD ROAD | HBX Studio
Saint George, Maine I 2,200 SF
Project Description: This single family residence is located in Mid-Coast Maine and included tearing down the existing home, leaving only the existing concrete foundation to build upon. The form directly responds to the site, beginning with the property lines and setbacks. My role was project lead, and I was invloved in this project from initial conception to early Construction Administration. I performed code research and coordinated our design intent with the AHJ in Saint George. I also developed the exterior forms and materiality for the home, assembled design decks, and presented the design to the client. I moved the project from early schematic 3D massing studies to finalizing the exterior design details. I was the point of contact for Structural coordination and was primarily responsible for completion of the Construction Documents.
Role: project lead
PACIFIC RIDGE MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING
| Dominek Architecture
Gresham, Oregon I 20,996 GSF Office + 1,602 SF Terrace
Project Description: The Pacific Ridge Medical Office Building is a ground-up multi-tenant medical office building in the Corridor District of downtown Gresham. The regular punched opening pattern typical of medical office development is uniquely articulated and accented with sloping brickwork and angular window patterning. Vertical towers emphasize the thrid-story roof deck that captures views of Mount Adams.
Role: initial concept, schematic design, design development, construction documents, permitting, construction administration
Portland, Oregon I 4,700 SF
Project Description: This unique building located in Roseway is a renovation of a commercial storefront, initially designed in 1956 by Burton Goodrich, an understudy of Frank Lloyd Wright. The building’s most recent prior use was the Sieu Thi grocery store--which had fallen into disrepair. This adaptive reuse of the now medical and veterinary professional building has a robust history, and it was an honor to help restore it to its former glory as a Mid-Century, architectural gem. The original design features a curved canopy with a Mid-Century Modern feel and an arc of storefront windows. Our intent was to restore the building’s retro characteristics and to highlight its most promindent feature, the canopy. The addition of contemporary lights into the soffit with a pattern that follows the canopy’s shape gives the structure an updated feel, while accentuating the building’s foremost features.
Role: as-builts, schematic design, design development, construction documents, permitting, construction administration
COURhouse | University of Louiaiana at Lafayette Building Institute Lafayette, Louisiana I 1,508 SF
Project Description: Influenced by the hosting and gathering culture of southern Louisiana, I, along with five graduate school colleagues, designed and built a custom home as part of our M.Arch program. The name COURhouse is derived from one of the home’s most prominent features, a centralized open coutryard that gives its residents an added sense of spaciousness within the home, while preserving privacy. The 3-bedroom, 2-bath floor plan is bathed in natural light by clerestory windows and a glass garage door that ushers the exterior courtyard into the interior of the kitchen. The home implements innovative, practical, and sustainable solutions through design and construction. This is achieved by the use of (16) 4kw PV panels on the roof, an instantaneous gas water heater, advanced wood framing, and energy efficient appliances. The front porch incorporates reclaimed cypress wood siding that we recovered by hand from an 1800s traditional Cajun home.
Role: initial concept, schematic design, design development, construction documents, construction administration, construction work
COURhouse GATE | University of Louiaiana at Lafayette Building Institute
Lafayette, Louisiana
Project Description: In addition to the collaborative effort of the six designers of the COURhouse, each student was responsible for a solo design component of the house. I was responsible for designing a gate to add privacy to the home’s outdoor spaces, while allowing for additional parking space when events are hosted. The gate is comprised of a welded steel angle frame, reclaimed corrugated metal panels, and cedar fence boards. The gate’s metal frame was fabricated in the university’s steel shop, then transported to the site, where the rest of the assembly was completed by myself and other students.
Role: project lead
REACH 4 COMMUNICATIONS | Paul J. Allain
Crowley, Louisiana I 7,851 SF
Project Description: This project is located in south Louisiana and consisted of exterior and interior renovations of the existing Reach 4 Communications office building. The premier feature of the project, the perforated metal panel screen system, was integrated into the existing pre-engineered metal building system.
Role: design development, construction documents
FOSS MARITIME | Dominek Architecture
Portland, Oregon I 8,500 SF
Project Description: This project consisted of the renovation and revitalization of Foss Martime World Headquarters, located on the west bank of the Willamette River. Exterior improvements focused on the entry, including a new canopy, elevator, and custom metal cladding. This project also included an extensive environmental permitting process, which drove the planting of over 400 native plants to enhance and restore the riparian edge in this heavy-industrial zone.
Role: initial concept, schematic design, design development, construction documents, permitting, construction administration
Portland, Oregon I 688 SF
Project Description: The D+H ADU, located in the in the Kerns Neighborhood in NE Portland, is a ground-up accessory dwelling unit located where the old garage used to be. The main home is a 1912 Craftsman, and the ADU draws inspiration from the house, re-creating some of the original details, in a contemporary manner. The unit is a 1-bedroom, 1-1/2 bath, 2-story loft space, with large glass doors facing south to maximize daylight potential and accentuate the open plan. Some of the original framing members were salvaged from the garage and used on the exterior of the new ADU.
Role: initial concept, schematic design, design development, construction documents, permitting, construction administration
AMBER ROAD TREKKING CABINS
| Dominek Architecture Latvia (Unbuilt - Design Competition Project)
Project Description: The Amber Road Trekking Cabin competition called into question the periodic, historic challenge of the situated object: contextualizing an architectural artifact in the pastoral landscape. Along vast topographies of the Latvian Baltic coast, the project asked for a low impact, transient and inhabitable infrastructure in support of an anticipated hiking network transecting the various landscapes definitive of the region: pine forests, dunes, and white sand beaches.
Role: charrettes, exterior renderings, modeling, details, competition board layouts
Configurations
Project Description: This project consisted of a feasibility study in making interior renovations to convert the second floor of the historic Hawthorne Theatre into creative office space. The main concept features an open office plan with the intent to preserve and refinish the dramatic ceiling, while adding some contemporary touches, such as acoustic panels and modern lighting. The unique large windows would also be preserved and refinished. My role was to collect as-built dimensions of the space to create marketing drawings, including a Pricing Set. I also created ceiling details and modeled the proposed space in 3D, which generated the renderings we presented to the client.
Role: as-builts, schematic design, modeling, rendering, marketing drawings, pricing drawings
Portland, Oregon I Area of Work 8,803 SF of 22,000 SF
Project Description: This project consisted of a tenant improvement for Stark’s Vacuums. The interior work included adding a demising wall to an existing 8,803 SF tenant space to create a 4,202 SF and 4,601 SF spaces. The exterior work involved removing a portion of the existing storefront and putting (in its place) new storefront doors and sidelite, adding a canopy on the east elevation (to match the existing) and removing the cloth awning on the east elevation, and leveling and re-pouring concrete sidewalk at the new storefront door
My initial role was to collect as-built dimensions and images of the building to create as-built drawings. As the project moved forward, I created the Permit Drawings and Construction Documents. This project was subject to an extensive permitting process, as the building is located within the Central City Plan District, with a Design Overlay, therefore a Design Review was necessary to implement the new canopy. I was responsible for coordinating revisions and corresponding directly with the plans reviewer from the City of Portland BDS. I also worked directly with Structural and the steel fabricator, coordinating details and reviewing Shop Drawings for the canopy details, respectively.
Role: initial concept, schematic design, design development, construction documents, permitting, construction administration
VIEW POINT INN + WELLNESS CENTER | Emerick Architects
Corbett, Oregon I 10,368 SF with a 351 SF Accessory Building
Project Description: This uniquely sited adaptive reuse project is located in the Columbia River Gorge and included the conversion of the former View Point Inn, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally built in 1924, the building had housed a number of various uses before severe damage from fire and the elements rendered it unusable and it was placed on Restore Oregon’s list of Endanged Places. In 2014 it was reported that restoration would be unlikely, however, it was recently purchased to be transformed into an alternative medicine retreat center. My role was to help develop the exterior design, including wall sections and building envelope details. I also played a crucial role in developing the interior design, including interior elevations and building sections.
Role: design development, construction documents
Hyas Point | YBA Architects Washougal, Washington I Total Site Area: 960,213 SF
Project Description: Hyas Point is part of a large waterfront developement and consists of four mixed-use podium buildings and extensive placemaking oriented site amenities, located in Washougal, WA. My role was to help move this project from Design Development to Construction Documents. I participated in design charrettes for developing the waterfront amenities, and I developed the assemblies, wall sections and many of the exterior details, primarily focusing on the storefronts, curtain walls, louvers, and occupied roof details.
Role: design development, construction documents
WTOD Affordable Housing | YBA Architects
Wilsonville, Oregon I 125,397 SF +/-
Project Description: Wilsonville Transit-Oriented Design is a five story mixed-use podium building which features affordable housing, a SMART Transit Welcome Center, and a Wilsonville Community Sharing Foodbank. My role was to help move this project from late Schematic Design to Permitting and Construction Documents. I built the Revit model, as the initial design was first developed in SketchUp. I also developed the commercial tenant plans, reflected ceiling plans, unit plan groups, including bathrooms and kitchens. I also developed the wall sections and many of the exterior details. I performed the energy code analysis via COMcheck, updated ADA diagrams per the current code, and assisted with interior design of the common public spaces and units. I also helped devlop the exterior materiality for the building and coordinated with Structural for the foundation details.
Role: schematic design, design development, construction documents, permitting
