WHAT I LIKE TRAVELLING

ACADEMICS: WHAT ALL I LEARNT

I year M.JAYA KISHAN Phone : +91 9440332289 email : jayakishan94@gmail.com In my 4 years studying in the field of architecture in J.N.A.F.A.U, my strong passion, knowledge, and skills in architecture developed and expanded, and has trained me into becoming a better designer with a deeper understanding of building design and the built environment industry as a whole. My professional experience has allowed my skills and knowledge to grow exponentially, having a hand in the design process of numerous large-scale projects simultaneously. As such, I have a good understanding of the building design process in a professional setting. I am a quick learner and will stop at nothing to expand my knowledge and skills to be better at the craft as a student or as a worker. I am also a team-player who is very willing to aid and assist those around me and would gladly impart whatever knowledge I have that might be useful to others.

DESIGN THESIS (HIGH RISE - MIXED USE ) - SITE SELECTION

INRODUCTION : The Dewan Bahadur Ramgopal (DBR) Mills was established in 1929 and was leased by the nizams for 99 years. The textile mill, located in the heart of the city and close to Tank Bund, had closed down for more than two decades ago, in 1992.

SITE AREA : 26 acres (1,05,218 SQM)

LOCATION : The site is situated next to the Hussain Sagar Lake which is located in the heart of the city. It is surrounded by the lake and connected canal on the front side and residential colony on the rear side.

TOPOGRAPHY : The site has an average altitude of 1680 ft from sea level and remains almost flat along its spread.

MICRO-CLIMATE : Due to the proximity from lake and presence of dense vegetation, the climate remains comparatively cooler. • Temperature ranging from 25°C to 35°C. • Humidity levels are higher SITE LEVELS AND CONTOURS : The site has very less contour level of 0.5m. The site is almost flat and a very slight slope in the site very useful for the flow of water to get away.

CLIMATE : Hyderabad has a unique combination of a tropical wet and dry climate that borders on a hot semi-arid climate. During the summer months, the mercury goes as high as 42°C while in winters the minimum temperature may come down to as low as 12°C. The mean daily temperature varies from 30°C to 36°C from April to June and from 20°C to 24°C in the months of December and January. RAINFALL : More than 75 per cent of the rainfall is received during the south-west monsoon season, i.e., from June to September, July being the month when it rains. September is the month, when there are rains. The south-west monsoon sets in by the 7th of June. SOILS & GEOLOGY : The soils underneath are either red loamy or clay loamy with thickness 0.5 to 1.5m in general. Drainage is dendritic to sub-dendritic, flows from N and NW to S and SE following slope. The Hussain sagar catchment area has a rugged terrain underlained by Granites. They are grey to pink, medium to coarse grained and porphyritic or non-porphyritic and massive in nature. The granite and gneiss country has low permeability, high bearing capacity (1000–2000 kg/cm2) /compressive strength and good foundation characteristics, which are favorable for greater urbanization.

HUMIDITY : Humidity during the monsoon season is very high exceeding 75% from July to September. In the dry months of March, April and May, humidity is comparatively low with an average of 25 to 30%.

RUINED DBR MILLS IN THE SITE

ELECTRICITY : Electricity is brought to the site through municipal electric line. There Is an existing transformer right outside the site in a corner. But this transformer would not be sufficient for the proposed project and thus additional transformers will have to be installed on the site.

SWOT :

STP: A sewage treatment plant needs to be installed within the site for treating the water before discharging it to the drainage.

• The site is surrounded by residential and public – semi public zones on either sides. • The site comes under work centre use zone which is ideal for the construction of offices and other purposes. • The site is adjacent to 80 ft wide roads on either sides.

DEMOGRAPHICS: Population of Hyd: 3,637,000 Population of Kavadiguda: 33082 GARBAGE : According too the present situation the garbage is disposed by the people conducting the events themselves. Other than that, the regular garbage is disposed to the GHMC disposal.

There is no special weakness in the site to be mentioned. There is the Hussain sagar naala adjacent to the site which is not maintained well and may contaminate the soil.

o

WATER SUPPLY : Drinking water is provided by the municipality. Water for other purposes can be taken by digging bore wells in the site.

SUN PATH : This is the sun-path direction over the site.

wOT :

S •

SW T : • The site hasn’t been in use since the past 20 years. So, mixed use might be a development in the site and create opportunities to people. • Since it is in the prime location, development in this area will lead to increase in land value in and around the site

T

SWO : • The main natural hazard is the depletion of groundwater table due to erratic rainfall heavy runoff (complete urbanization but for few parks, no GW recharge zone) experiences drought situation leading to intense drinking water problem.

DESIGN FEATURES: Shading by vegetation in all the open areas. - Mutual shading of blocks. - The placement of courtyards between blocks to provide both mutual shading and shaded open areas. - Careful integration of windows and light shelves ensure effective daylight distribution. - Building automation system is used to minimize energy waste. - Stack effect.[CRITERIA13]* - Usage of pervious concrete pavers for footpaths and pathways to ensure penetration of rainwater into the ground.[CRITERIA:5]* Usage of aerated concrete blocks as the building material because of its advantages. (1) Abundantly manufactured in northern India. (2) Light weight (3) Less in cost (4) Provides insulation, fire and mold resistance. - Usage of BIPV’s in every house to minimize usage of electricity. - Solar panels provided are used for the corridor, street lighting, and club house function and partially to heat water that is supplied to every house. [CRITERIA-19,18]* - STP, DEWATS, Rain water harvesting pit are used for the waste water treatment which is used for watering the plants on site and the sludge from stp is used generate energy which is used to heat water that is supplied to every house.[CRITERIA20]* - Usage of endomic species for landscaping.[criteria 10]* - Efficient and aerated water fixtures are used to reduce water wastage.
