Welcome to the 73rd issue of The Wood-Mizer Way. This year is starting out to be our most successful year ever…and we owe that to every one of our customers. We never take our success for granted and because of that I want to join all of our more than 600 worldwide owner/employees in thanking you for being a part of the Wood-Mizer family. This issue of “The Way” has a more international flair than most of our prior issues. I have just returned from an International Dealers meeting in Kolo, Poland where I had the privilege of meeting dealers from Western, Eastern, and Central Europe, as well as agents from Russia and India. Additional dealers in Asia, Australia, Africa, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and South America give our company access to almost every country in the world. In our travels, we have found that cultures, applications for the mills, languages, faiths, politics and backgrounds vary in every country. Despite these differences, you will see through some of the articles in this issue that our customers around the world share a common passion for the Wood-Mizer sawmill. The cover story will take you to a country that many of you (including myself) have never heard about or could pinpoint on a map. This small country, Bhutan, in Southern Asia is a place that few of us in the West will every see…but an LT40 found its way there along with a woodworker from Montana to do something extraordinary. In a country that doesn’t even have one lumber yard, over four million board feet of lumber was cut on a manual LT40 to build the massive project shown in the article. I congratulate Bruce Tollefson and the crew of local sawyers, woodworkers, and laborers on an amazing accomplishment. You will also find a story about an LT300 owner in England that uses his mill to produce pallet lumber for one of the largest steel companies in Europe. David Holden, owner of an LT300, shares his unique application. He also shares an almost universal trait of mill owners in most of the countries outside of the US…running a mill as a business. While Wood-Mizer mills are primarily known in the States as portable mills powered by gas or diesel engines, the vast majority of Wood-Mizers sold in Europe are stationary mills, with electric motors, and often run as industrial machines that operate every day of the week on multiple shifts. In addition to the international stories, you will also find a number of articles about projects right here at home, service tips to help you run successfully, and information on the latest products we have to offer. I hope and pray that each of you will have a safe and productive cutting season. One of the keys to our success through the years has been to operate a little differently than other companies. Yes, Wood-Mizer is growing every year, but we always want to treat each customer like we did when we sold our first mills nearly 25 years ago. Even with tens of thousand of owners around the world, if we are doing our jobs well, we want you to feel like you are our only customer, and a close friend, each time we interact. If you don’t, let us know.

Wood-MizerNewsbriefs
Wood-Mizer Time This past spring, the entire state of Indiana joined 48 other states in observing Daylight Saving Time. Unfortunately, telling time in Indiana remains somewhat bewildering since 18 counties now observed Central Daylight Time and the remaining 74 counties of Indiana observe Eastern Daylight Time. So, what time is it at Wood-Mizer headquarters?
Wood-Mizer is on Eastern Daylight Time observing Daylight Savings.
Sawmill Safety As the company that strives to offer the safest portable sawmill in the industry, Wood-Mizer Canada was approached by the Ontario Forestry Safe Workplace Association to partner with them on a project to promote sawmill safety. Representatives from the OFSWA traveled to the Wood-Mizer office in Manilla, Ontario, to photograph and document safety features of Wood-Mizer sawmills. The two organizations focused on proper operating procedures, maintenance, personal protective equipment and safety resource material that sawyers should use. The association, which promotes OFSWA and Wood-Mizer eliminating workplace injuries and illnesses promote Sawmill Safety through various training and information programs, will use the photos and documentation to produce a multimedia product on their website to heighten safety awareness in sawmilling and in the operation of all machinery.

Industry News According to the U.S. Forest Products Annual Market Review and Prospects, 2002 – 2006, the United States continues to play an important role in world forest product markets and there is currently a large forest resource and high production and consumption of wood products. Thin-kerf sawmilling professionals can benefit from research performed at the Forest Products Laboratory (www.fpl.fs.fed.us) by Forest Service professionals. Whether you process a few hundred or 100,000 board feet per week, FPL publications can be invaluable in determining price, adjusting product mix, and in assessing future opportunity. The FPL’s Review, published each January, analyzes recent events for their impacts on the forest products industry then uses that information to address near term prospects for the trade. Major findings in the 2002 – 2006 edition include:
Economic Prospects: Fair strength in 2006 as the housing sector remains strong and the U.S. Gulf Coast begins to see rebuilding take place. Nearly every industry sector from sawn hard and softwoods to manufactured lumbers is expected to see at least some growth.
Policy Initiatives:
• Forest
certification initiatives promoted by the private sector are beginning to take hold in the marketplace so the various certification programs available to land and mill owners are described. In just three years (1999 – 2002) certified lands in the U.S. have risen from 17% of all timber holdings to 30%.
• Economic
globalization has had, “…a permeating influence” on the U.S. economy. Industrial sectors have trailed other sectors in recovering from 2001’s recession. Structural change, especially consolidation and downsizing, have significantly impacted the industry.
• Barriers
to trade and market access issues continue to trouble the industry. Some issues have been resolved while others continue to reduce opportunity.
In Sum: A strong domestic economy with strong housing demand continuing should overcome the negative impact of trade restrictions and globalization. Overall, the industry is seeing modest growth.

Traveling sawmill used in construction of village church and medical clinic
An LT15 sawmill can be shipped anywhere in the world. See pages 14-15 for special savings.
A strip of airfield carved out of a jungle in the Ap Ma Village in Papua New Guinea, served as the landing strip for a (Wood-Mizer) sawmill, purchased with donations from churches in America. Arriving in the village last year, the (LT15) sawmill was uncrated and set up for a village-wide demonstration. Following the test in Ap Ma, the sawmill was transported to a neighboring village by canoe. Jesse Pryor, 29 year-old head of Outreach International in Papua New Guinea and former resident of Martinsville, Indiana, taught the villagers how to operate the sawmill and mill the lumber from Ironwood trees, the most durable building material which is abundant in this region. Pryor negotiated a deal with the village to harvest the trees and use the lumber to rebuild the Ap Ma church and make major repairs to the missionary quarters. He also needed lumber to construct a new medical clinic. Pryor and the villagers cut down and milled twice as many logs as he needed, giving half the finished lumber to the village that owned the trees. The boards and the sawmill were transported back to the Ap Ma village by canoe when the work was completed.
The Wood-Mizer Way • Summer 2006
Pryor was born and raised in Papua New Guinea, and knows firsthand the everyday struggles the people face. The missionary and his family returned to the United States in October to await the birth of their third child. While here, Pryor also purchased a Massey Ferguson 1533 4WD tractor from John Shoffner, which will be flown to Papua New Guinea and make the last leg of its journey by canoe to the village. The tractor will also help with the construction of the new buildings and keep the landing strip clear from the growth of underbrush. “The airstrip is our lifeline to the outside,” explained Pryor. “If someone is ill, or we need to evacuate in a hurry, the runway is our only way out.” Pryor and his wife Karie, and children, Naleh, Elijah and Judah, are awaiting a visa for their newborn son so they can return to their work in New Guinea.

Bridge Building By: Deanna Bunten Editor, The Wood-Mizer Way
For those of you who have been following our articles about the Bridgeton Covered Bridge rebuilding efforts, the project is right on schedule. This summer is an exciting time for the Indiana community as the new bridge takes shape; symbolizing the rebirth of the town’s namesake. The Bridgeton Bridge project is a coming-together type project that we see our Wood-Mizer owners get involved with so often. The cooperative effort came about when the 137-year-old bridge was reduced to just burned timbers in 2005 at the hands of an arsonist. The community banned together and decided not to let the tragedy be the end of the story. After months of meetings, planning, fundraising, and organizing, the official beginning kicked-off on January 12, 2006. The event was emotional with individuals sharing
stories about how they remembered crying last year on that cold April morning and how this day brought tears of joy. When a replica of a timber frame bridge was raised into the air, everyone knew there was one, ultimate goal. As with any major undertaking, there is a step-by-step process and everyone has a role to play. Three Wood-Mizer owners agreed to help from day one. Dan Collum and Don Price, both LT40 Super Hydraulic owners, and Terry Rooksberry, LT40 Hydraulic owner, set up near the site of the burned bridge and sawed the 80,000 board feet of lumber needed to reconstruct the 245-foot long bridge. The crew cut mostly Popular which will make up the majority of the bridge with Oak being used for the floor boards. The longest beams were nearly 45’ long and required a bed extension which we were honored to loan for the project. I had the privilege of delivering our donated blades on a spring afternoon to the sawing site and watching the three “LTs” at work. It was an impressive and smooth set up. The orange sawmills were lined up and with the help of many volunteers, logs were loaded and lumber was cut, sorted, and stacked. Some of the timbers were hauled

Emerald Ash Borer Dan Cassens is a professor of Forest Products in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana. In one way or another, he has been handling wood and or trees every day for the last 40 years. He attributes an increase in his knowledge about wood from operating his Wood Mizer LT40. The emerald ash borer is an invasive insect which kills all species and trees of North American Ash. Portions of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Ontario, Canada are now quarantined because of the insect. Its spread will continue and given present information, one of our most important specie groups will be devastated and millions of board feet of timber wasted. The most damage has occurred in the Detroit, Michigan and Winsor, Ontario area. The insect probably arrived in this area from Asia on crating material about 10 years ago but wasn’t reported until 2002. The adult beetle is slender, elongate and about ¼ to ½ inches long. Color varies, but adults are usually bronze or golden green overall with darker metallic emerald green wing covers. The top of the abdomen under the wings is metallic purplish red and can be seen when the wings are spread. The larvae reach a length of about 1 to 1-1/4 inches, are white to cream colored and dorso ventrally flattened. The larvae make Sshaped galleries in the cambial region. The galleries are packed with fine, sawdust-like frass. Individual galleries often extend for ¾ to 1-1/4 inches in length. When the young adults emerge, they leave a D-shaped exit hole. The larvae girdle the tree. Early emerald ash borer attacks can be difficult to detect. However, woodpeckers tend to attack infested trees in the early stage. After the first year, D-shaped exit holes are present in the bark and S-shaped galleries from larval feeding should be present directly beneath the
bark. Because of the girdling effect, wilting of foliage begins at the top of the tree and the tree canopy thins. After 2 years, about 30 to 50% of the canopy is dead and after 3-4 years, the entire tree is dead. Epicormic shoots may develop on the trunk of the tree, often at the margin of live and dead tissue. Dense root sprouting occurs after the tree dies. Ash trees of all sizes, both healthy and stressed, are killed. On its own, the beetle is reported to spread about ½ mile per year. Unfortunately, consumers and home owners routinely move ash products with bark attached such as nursery stock, firewood, logs, and lumber long distances, spreading emerald ash borer far from its initial location in the Detroit area. The movement of firewood is now considered the primary cause of the rapid spread of the insect. To help control the spread, area quarantines are implemented where the insect is confirmed, restricting the movement of ash products and implementing specific guidelines for its movement in the form of compliance agreements. It is beyond the scope of this article to describe the quarantine but information can be found by searching online

using the terms: emerald ash borer, province or state, quarantine. In general, material can be utilized within the quarantined area but movement of the material outside of the area is regulated and appropriate authorities should be consulted. Wood Mizer mills are ideal for processing this material within the immediate location of where it is found. Research has now shown that ash trees can be chemically treated to prevent or slow death from attack by emerald ash borer. Imidacloprid or acephate has been shown to be effective. Since a yearly treatment is required, careful consideration should be given to whether treatment should be initiated or the tree should be replaced. Ash, particularly white ash, is one of our most important and useful species. It has a coarse grain pattern like oak, is dense with fast grown stock being very dense, is strong and shock resistant, and bends wells for curved parts. It has been used for furniture, cabinets, flooring, millwork, handle stock (particularly for long handles), and used in bending and athletic equipment such baseball bats. Ash has a white sapwood which is generally preferred and a light brown sometimes mottled heartwood. Large heartwood zones are associated with large older trees and trees under stress. The white color and the amount of sapwood in trees dying a slow death from whatever cause could very likely be jeopardized. The initial moisture content is low and the wood dries easily. Black ash is anatomically different, less dense and the only species that can be separated from the others once cut into lumber. Ash in the north and Appalachian region is now one of the lowest valued species, comparable to yellow poplar and basswood. Ash lumber prices have been under pressure due to the abundant supply of oak combined with the increased supply of ash logs being sold in the north. The Weekly Hardwood Review reports that today’s ash lumber prices are only half of what they were in 1991. It is doubtful if the situation will improve as foresters and others are recommending that all merchantable
The Wood-Mizer Way • Summer 2006
ash be removed during a timber harvest if the emerald ash borer is a threat. Ash is not resistant to wood decay; wood quality deteriorates rapidly once the tree is dead. Dead trees will not provide the white sapwood preferred by many buyers. Storage of ash lumber presents problems, as well. During the drying process, sticker shadows easily develop. Processing fresh logs and rapid drying will help to reduce sticker shadow and other types of stains. Do not leave the lumber in the air drying yard any longer than necessary as prolonged air drying reduces lumber quality regardless of species. Ash lumber is also subject to powder post beetle damage during storage. If damage is detected, the wood can be fumigated or placed back in the dry kiln as long as temperatures uniformly exceed at least 135oF for an extended period. Specific recommendations can be found in the USDA Dry Kiln Operators Manual. It is hard to envision a hardwood forest without various ash species but unfortunately this has already become a reality in some areas and more are developing. In the long run, science may help solve the problem. Scientists and staff at the Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center (HTIRC) at Purdue University are working on several projects concerning the emerald ash borer. HTIRC is part of a large collaborative effort in Michigan to collect and store ash seed for future deployment of ash seedlings and to conserve genetic diversity of ash so this diversity is not lost during the first wave of insect attack. In another effort, since there is no known resistance to the invading insect, HTIRC is screening proprietary proteins that are known to be effective against various kinds of insects. Two proteins have shown promise in initial tests. Once verified, genes for these proteins will be inserted into ash to provide resistance to the borer. Experimental techniques are being developed whereby ash can be modified with these genes. Once resistant trees are developed, they will be used in a comprehensive program to slow or halt the spread of the insect. World of Pallets By: Brian Hind International Public Relations
Anglo-Dutch steel giant, Corus, has improved efficiency and cost for the thousands of wooden pallets they use to transport flat, rolled steel around Europe. The change-for-the-better came when the company responded favourably to a rolling mill operator’s offer to set up his own pallet making operation. David Holden presented them with a calculation of costs and deliveries which was difficult to refuse. Not only was it a good deal, outsourcing the pallet manufacturing allowed Corus to sharply focus on their core business of quality steel production. So in 1996, David, an ex-Royal Marine, established his firm in a nearby lock-up garage; equipping himself with a second-hand cross cut saw and a generator. Very quickly, by working long and arduous hours, he reached a level of 400 pallets a week. Delighted with their cost savings and supplier, Corus awarded David the contract to supply more of its rolling mills with much needed pallets. Similar delight on David’s part was tempered by the exhausting nature of the now growing pallet operation. He and his wife Lesley, co-owner of the firm, took a hard look at it all. To reduce the very long hours they decided to reorganise and relocate their operation and invest in specialised equipment. Over the next 10 years, Holden Pallets Ltd. grew to supply five Corus mills; providing 75% of the company’s pallets. The key to this expansion was a new timber processing layout with an LT300 system at its core.
Quantum Leap
The LT300 thin-kerf, industrial bandsaw, in itself, represents a quantum leap for Holden Pallets; headquartered in England’s North
www.woodmizer.com
Country. Furthermore, it is complemented by a log loader, incline conveyor and transfer deck, and a six-head MultiHead resaw. To increase production further, an edger is stationed nearby and is always busy. Also, a smaller band sawmill, known as the LT20, has been added. This unit is similar to the domestic LT28. (Note: Some model specifications vary for the European market.) Many factors played a role in choosing a complete system from AWMV; including price. David’s investment for all the timber processing equipment was £106,000 sterling which he explains is about one-quarter of the price for setting up a traditional sawmill operation in Great Britain to do the same job. Equally impressive is the sawmill’s performance. Although quality cut lumber is not a prime objective in pallet manufacturing, David has received compliments from Corus on the quality of the sawn timbers. While that praise means a lot to him and speaks highly of his sawmill, he is quick to comment on the thin-kerf technology. “However, of more importance to our operation is the thin kerf technology, which produces less sawdust and consequently more cut wood. In effect, it permits price values very different from traditional sawmilling charges.”
LT300 Takes the Pain Out of Anglo-Dutch Steel Group’s Pallet Production
The Process
Holden takes delivery of logs at his 1.5 acre site and positions them next to either the LT300 industrial sawmill, operated from a remote station, or the small LT20 which is used for small, extra runs of pallets. Once learned, Holden operators say with the LT300 it is simple to perform cutting and handling operations with joy sticks and with the Setworks which quickly and accurately positions the cutting head to the right depth

...The World of Pallets continued from page 13 for pre-set pattern cutting. They now get 13 to 16m3 daily and the saw runs for eight or nine hours if tea breaks are included. The LT20 breaks down the logs into slabs and cants which are manhandled to the incline conveyor. The LT300 fires the slabs and cants directly on to the inclined conveyor and transfer deck and then to the six-head MultiHead where they are sawn into 92x52mm struts or to the edger which does likewise. The sawn component are subsequently placed on a jig, assembled into pallets and loaded for delivery to various Corus sites. The process from log to loaded-wagon-of-pallets is achieved in one, continual process.

Looking Forward
Above: A Twin-Blade Edger boosts production at Holden Pallets. Right: The process from log to loaded trailer is efficient and smooth.
In England, David has five satellite operations. They receive some sawn timber from the main location in Darwen, but also cut some themselves on cross cut saws and assemble them on the various Corus sites, each of which tailors its pallets to local requirements. Nationwide, Holden Pallets employs 23 people. During 2005, Holden Pallets averaged 20-25m3 of pallet wood a day for Corus.
Which Blade Should You Use? Chartering new territory, it is the first application of the LT300 band sawmill in Great Britain and even in Western Europe. David wants to stay in or around Darwen where he was born and bred and from where his father also went to work at the Walker Steel Mill. That doesn’t mean his business is done growing, though. David anticipates expanding even further in 2006 when Holden Pallets expects to turn over £1.25m sterling, which includes income from a new Corus site on England’s Northeast coast. It will expand the business by almost one third, but David is confident that they have the right equipment for the growth.

Three factors should be considered when determining your blade choice: 1. Hook Angle — The hook angle (how far the tooth leans forward) should be chosen based on the type of wood you are cutting. Softwoods require higher hook angles (10-13 degree). Hard, frozen, or knotty woods require lower hook angles (4-10 degree). The 10degree hook angle is a good allpurpose profile recommended for most sawing applications. 2. Blade Thickness — Thicker blades provide faster feed rates and better cutting performance but require higher horsepower. Thicker blades also perform better in difficult sawing conditions such as knotty, frozen, dry, or extremely hard material. Thinner blades provide longer flex life and are recommended for sawmills with lower horsepower or where production (high feed rates) is not a primary factor in your application. 3. Blade Width — As with blade thickness, blade width provides faster feed rates and increased cutting performance, but also requires more horsepower. If maintained properly, wider blades can also be resharpened more often, resulting in more production during the life of the blade. Narrow blades perform better on low-horsepower sawmills and in some difficult sawing conditions.
Wood-Mizer Industrial Blades U.S. Price List Wood-Mizer DoubleHard Blades use a high-quality, hard steel alloy and the teeth are induction-hardened to stay sharper longer and can be resharpened multiple times.

Peaceful Place There is a small, hidden place in Southern
Asia called Bhutan. It is a quiet place that values happiness and peacefulness with soaring snowcapped peaks, alpine meadows and densely forested hills and ravines abounding in exotic flora and fauna. While it might sound like it could be right out your backyard, Bhutan has kept to itself for hundreds of years. Bhutan is one of the most isolated nations in the world; foreign influences and tourism are heavily regulated by the government to preserve its culture. That seclusion did not stop a Wood-Mizer sawmill from making its trek to the ancient country.

The Wood-Mizer LT40 was transported to Bhutan chiefly to aid in construction projects. Initially the Druk Sherrig Company used the mill which served the company well for several years as they worked on commercial projects. In 2002, Yangphel Construction purchased the Wood-Mizer sawmill from Druk Sherrig to build a prestigious, multibuilding hotel. Yangphel is a diverse business; prominent in construction and tourism: an unusual combination in other parts of the world but not in Bhutan. The company is owned by a charismatic business developer/tourism entrepreneur – and former archery champion – Ugyen Rinzin. The 36-year-old works with officials to open the doors of the kingdom a little at a time; promoting tours while adhering to Bhutan’s restrictive travel policy. Mr. Rinzin knew the operator of a travel company in Montana. When he advanced the idea that he wanted to build a hotel for travelers to Bhutan, word got around in Montana that something spectacular would be developed - forever bridging the two worlds. Local woodworker, Bruce Tollefson, expressed an interest. “I like to travel and my passion is with wood so I thought this was a wonderful opportunity to do both,” explained Bruce. Bruce’s reputation for being an expert craftsman and his eagerness to work on the project got back to the right people and he was hired. One of Bruce’s responsibilities was to train Bhutanese construction workers on using a WoodMizer sawmill. Working around wood the majority of his life, Bruce was familiar with the “famous sawmills” but had never owned or operated

one himself. He learned to use a Wood-Mizer in about 30 minutes while still at home, and then took his knowledge to the mountain kingdom where he showed key members of the team how to operate the LT40. “I have nothing but good things to say about the Wood-Mizer. I was able to learn how to operate the machine quickly and then train others in a completely different world. They picked it up quite well,” recalls Bruce. Bruce, along with others from Montana, would travel to Bhutan at different times and stay a few weeks to several months to guide a crew of Bhutanese craftspeople in the construction of the majestic hotel complex. Thinking back to his first couple of visits, Bruce recalls after he left the crew to run the Wood-Mizer on their own, they were proficient sawyers. When he returned six months later, he “couldn’t keep up” with them. Since the hotel grabs a foothold on uneven terrain along the Paro River, the mill’s portability was a critical aspect. It was transported to the rocky site in 2002 and cut logs and dimensional lumber for 18 hours each day, seven days a week for nearly three years. The manual mill handled all sizes of logs with the average for this project being 20-24 inches in diameter. Mr. Rinzin estimates 4,200,000 board feet of wood was cut for the massive undertaking. As further testament to the amount of lumber produced, Bruce puts forth, “There is no lumber yard in Bhutan, so every piece of wood used in the project has to come through that Wood-Mizer.” The LT40’s versatility in cutting logs and dimensional lumber comes to the forefront considering it cut and trimmed
lumber for all of the interior framing, Most travelers will stay in one of 40 flooring and trim work. In addition, all the units in eight buildings as part of the hotel windows and doors, including their wooden complex. Knowledgeable and Thorough… “Mike Ike” Offers His Expertise
22
Getting to know Mike Eichenberger is an easy thing to do. He is friendly, welcomes conversation and has a warm sense of humor. This edition of The Wood-Mizer Way will give you more insight into the man affectionately known as: Mike Ike. Mike has been with Wood-Mizer for more than 20 years. He joined the company on Friday, September 13, 1985 after working for both UPS and Pepsi Co. Working hard comes naturally for Mike. He started out at Wood-Mizer as a drill press operator and then moved to small assembly. After small assembly, he assumed the role of assembling vacuum kilns until he was moved to Customer Service where he has been ever since. The time spent with assembling the VK (vacuum kiln) models made Mike a natural for his “Kiln Expert” status within the Customer Service department. Mike has been married to the girl of his dreams, Shelia, for 26 years. He is the father of two; one daughter and one son. Their family was blessed with a precious granddaughter in 2002 making Mike a Grandfather. Mike lights up when he talks about her saying, “She’s the apple of my eye.” When asked about Mike Eichenberger, the Customer Service Manager, Jim Brown, replied, “Mike has been an asset to WoodMizer from the moment he was hired. He has a great attitude and puts 100% into everything he does. Mike has a broad range of knowledge that he brings to the department. He is our kiln specialist, proficient in all of the orange product line,

as well as the MetalMizer, moulders and the Blade Maintenance equipment. We are thankful for his 20+ years of dedication.” The best thing for Mike about working at Wood-Mizer is the great people and great benefits. “Being in one-on-one contact with the customers and assisting them in their efforts of making a better life for their families makes me feel blessed.” said Mike. When asked about his most treasured times while working at Wood-Mizer, Mike commented, “Having traveled as a technician for so many years, I have a lot of fond memories. Even though I find myself sometimes tired of being away from home, when I come back I feel so good about having helped people achieve the dreams and goals they thought they could never reach. I feel I have shared the blessings God has given to me.” Mike’s skill at troubleshooting every piece of Wood-Mizer equipment is so valuable that most of his time is spent on the phone. As one of the Service Department’s “Phone Warriors” he is sorely missed on the occasions when he travels abroad. Mike’s most recent trip was to South America to assist with specialized training. If it’s Mike you need to reach, just enter extension 1601 – but be prepared to leave a message or wait. Surrounded by manuals and resources to help him serve, Mike takes his complete time with each and every customer that he has on the phone. There is no rushing the service that Mike gives...thank goodness he has a skilled group of customer service representatives to help.
ProfessionalCut When the Country Club of Indianapolis needed to clear some trees to make their prestigious golf course more turf-friendly, they contacted their long-time, lawn mower partner, Lastec; knowing their parent company Wood-Mizer would have the right machine for the job. After 15 minutes of on-site training and demonstrating, Construction Foreman, Rich Brabeck, was up and sawing. His immediate reaction was exhilaration because using the LT40 Hydraulic sawmill was going to help them do their part in recycling 100-year old trees back into the course and save their members “absolutely thousands of dollars.” Golf Course Superintendent, Mike Seaton, and his team had a plan for the trees they had to take down to improve the course which included an outdoor cold storage building for equipment and some furniture pieces for the clubhouse. “We do a lot of our own work as a way to save money and with this sawmill we are saving even more than we imagined…. it’s unreal,” commented Rich who did the majority of the sawing. Woodworking projects are not new to the grounds maintenance team. Rich explains, “Every golf course has to deal with trees; either cutting them down or taking care of those that fall. This machine produces resources we can use to improve our course. It’s awesome.”
Previously for projects that required wood, the men would purchase the lumber from local lumberyards and use their onsite woodshop. While Rich has taken care of golf courses most of his life, he discovered his passion for wood as a young man when he worked alongside an experienced carpenter. Rich explains that this project allowed him to combine his two loves. “It was rewarding taking our own trees and converting them into boards and then into a finished piece that beautifies our facility.” The structure is open-air on one side and was completely built during their off-season with material from the WoodMizer with the exception of the roof and structural posts. With their available Pine trees, the crew produced siding and used the scrapes for mulch beds. As the course continues their grounds maintenance efforts and more trees become available, they intend to add onto the structure and finish it so it resembles a horse barn with stalls for equipment. That long term goal will have to wait at least for awhile since the team is busy cutting grass and using one of their other favorite pieces of equipment: The Lastec Articulator mower.

Every time bad weather brings down a tree on his property, Pitts fires up his Wood-Mizer LT15 sawmill and gets busy cutting the logs into lumber for use in his furniture. This simple entry table (15 in. deep by 24 in. wide by 30 in. tall) is one of many examples built from that lumber. For the carcase, Pitts selected prime pieces of cherry, quartersawn red oak, and white oak, and he carved the walnut pulls from a log in his firewood pile. The finish is shellac. 24

Forestry Forum
...Bridge Building continued from page 9 by flat-bed trailer to a timber framing beamery to be notched while others remained at the site for the construction team to prepare for assembly. From the moment we arrived, there was no mistaking that the project was a community affair. A school bus of honor students stopped by as part of their field trip chaperoned by Jim Meece, a Parke County Commission, school teacher, and a key member of the bridge team. In addition, passing cars paused to watch for a while and take a few pictures. I even got to see a volunteer Wood-Mizer owner whom I met on my very first writing assignment for WoodMizer. Even though two years had passed since I met him at a fundraising event he and his wife host at their home every year for 4H, Bob Chastain’s familiar face greeted me with a smile as I walked up. Our reunion was brief because there was work to be done, but I know you can all relate to how the sawmill brings people together. The work is continuing this summer and the Bur Arch designed bridge is being built on the site previously used for the sawmills and log yard. A crane will transport the massive structures across the road and place them over the Big Raccoon River. The completion is scheduled to coincide with the 50th Covered Bridge Festival which begins in October and is the annual fall festival that draws thousands of people to celebrate the bridges. In the United States, Indiana has the third highest number of covered bridges with Parke County hosting the most in one county. It is my pleasure to be working with such an amazing group of people whose passion for a bridge is infectious. Their commitment and volunteerism is admirable and I look forward to giving you the next update on this inspirational project.

When my Amish friends have a large or sometimes tedious job to do, they often get together on a Saturday and share the work. They call this get together a “frolic.” The men gather early in the morning and the work commences. The women come together to provide a noon meal. All day long, everyone visits and shares the day with family and friends. The fellowship is wonderful; as once again they prove that many hands make light work. I have had the privilege and good fortune to be included in several frolics. It is always a fun day filled with great food, good conversation and lots of good natured teasing. The work accomplished during a frolic is amazing. I used my Amish friend’s example and invited all of our children, who live close enough, to help put siding on our new machinery shed. The kids, at first, thought I was crazy, but they’re used to my crazy ideas. I built the machinery shed last fall. Time was of the essence as winter closed in on us so I used conventional materials for framework; knowing I would side it with lumber sawn on my Wood-Mizer. As the sun broke though the early morning April sky, I hustled around to get everything ready before all my help arrived. My wife was busy in the kitchen preparing to feed a small army of loggers and carpenters.
The children and their spouses arrived. They had grandchildren and covered dishes in tow. The girls headed for the kitchen to help my wife. The boys piled on the hay wagon and went with me out back to the machinery shed. I had been given several spruce logs that I saved for this project. The trees were once on a property line on the outskirts of town. This urban timber was almost the fuel for a large bonfire. The owner kept the branches and tops for his fire and I came away with several nice siding logs. We divided up into teams. Some of us would do the sawing while the others put

the siding on the building. Once we found our rhythm, the work progressed quickly. The girls brought us cold drinks and a snack to hold us over until our big meal. They sat awhile and critiqued our work while we snacked and poked fun at each other. The day came to a close. The work though not completely finished was very well done. The remaining siding will be finished at a later date. Our family frolic concluded around the supper table where we dined on several of my favorite dishes. It seems that the girls tried to out do themselves, too. The meal was wonderful; the conversation lasted even after chore time. The performance of the Wood-Mizer was discussed repeatedly, as each family considered their next building project. I’m sure another family frolic will soon take place and we’ll gather for food, fun, and work; making buildings and memories. My sawmill will be the centerpiece of another great celebration….thanks, Wood-Mizer. The siding of board and batten strips would have cost me over $600 at current prices. The logs were free for hauling them. The Wood-Mizer turned them into lumber in short order. We cut over 1,000 board feet for the machinery shed siding. We have a good assortment of lumber left for other projects. I’d say that we salvaged over $800 in lumber in one day. Proving once again that a Wood-Mizer doesn’t cost….It pays!

It has been found that a poor ground contact can cause the electrical current to flow through the 1½” cam follower bearings, causing the bearing to heat up and melting the internal bearing lubricant. The result is premature bearing failure. Wood-Mizer recommends that you take preventive maintenance action. Regularly inspect the ground contact block that rides along the bottom rail to ensure the contact block is tight, free of sawdust and foreign debris. Ground Contact Block Adjustment Bolt (2)

“We purchased land in Arkansas to retire. Our property had quite a few Red Cedar and marketable timber so we set about cutting what we would need for our projects. With projects pretty well complete, I must say we are very pleased with what turned out and with our Wood-Mizer saw. Our investment with Wood-Mizer has paid off.” Bernie Babak, Mountain View, Arkansas LT25G11
