introduction
My name is Jay Chang, an industrial design student at the Cleveland Institute of Art (Top five ID school in the US). I’m looking to contribute my talents and the skills that I have learned during my time at the Cleveland Institute of Art, to a professional design environment. So far I have learned many skills that have helped me understand the process of developing and completing the design process. Through out the projects I have learn the importance of brand language, packaging, ergonomics, user and materials.
leica phone brand focus project
This project is focus on brand identity. One have to designs a mobile communication device for a company of their choice. Select a brand that could conceivably have one of this type of product in their product line, but does not currently have one. The brand of my choice is Leica, Leica is a German camera manufacturer who makes great quality cameras and camera lens. The design language for this brand is vintage, quality, classic, luxury and long standing value.
When I design this communication device I try to address some of the problems that is in the society today. I realize that people purchase and replace their old cell phones with newer cell phones, whenever there is a newer model on market. This behavior, of wanting something newer has cause manufacturers consume more and more energy and new materials. Leica’s products are made in such a high quality and precision that their cameras gain value over time. I see this as one of Leica’s brand identity, so I design with a intent of creating a cell phone camera that people see as valuable and precious.

green tree design brand family project
The project adjective is to develop a family of products that are aesthetically and functionally harmonious. Ergonomically and functionally appropriate for the intended user groups. One have to come up with a logo and name for the products.
These sets of furniture are designed to raise environmental awareness. The forms of furniture are inspired by nature. The idea is to use recycled wood from local businesses as building materials, to prevent cutting down more trees and to save costs.
research benefits 1. save costs. 2. prevents from cutting down virgin trees and using new materials. 3. history and uniqueness of material.
what can you make with recycled wood? 1. new houses / barns. 2. furnitures. 3. wooden floors.
concepts
In this project I try to incorporate the following characters in my design, includes organic, nature inspired forms, and simple clean surfaces. I look at much different vegetation in nature and try to abstract the forms of trees and integrate into the furniture.

Chair is inspired by the abstract shape of a leaf.
2. shelf
Inspired by the shape of trees and vegetation.Three different size drawers are incorporated with the shelf.
3. desk

This functional desk is designed to have many functions and minimize the building material. The three legs can fold out into a chair, bookstands, and a backpack rack. Also a translucent structure on the surface of the desk can serve as a table lamp, and a shelf. This structure can move freely in two different directions for different placement.
ergonomic pencil sharpener ergonomics project
The project adjective is to redesign a existence product and make it ergonomically sound. The product of my choice is a manual pencil sharpener. As an artist and designer I found that I use a pencil sharpener on a daily bases.
Sometimes I’ll bring my sketch book everywhere I go, and I’ll always carry a pencil or pen and a small manual pencil sharpener with me. But the design of the traditional pencil sharpener isn’t ergonomically sound.
1. product why do people use it ? - light weight - doesn’t need batteries - portable - compact - easy to use - have more control
2. problems why don’t people like about it ? - shavings can get messy - breaking leds - inconsistancy - it’s manual - stress on the fingers - wrist can get tired - sharp corners are hard to grip
3. making prototype using foam to create models for testing i created three different angles, 90, 45 and 67.5 degress. and six different handles/ containers which are labled as 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 for the testers.
4. testing i had each tester to choose the most comfortable handle and the most desirable angle.
5. result as result angle B 45 degree has the most vote and handle 4 is the most favorite among the 6 other handles.
6. final direction / refinement refinement reduce the size by 25% makes it smaller and more portable, still pay attention on the comfortable forms and angle. rounded all edges for easier handling. apply circular marks on the face of pencil sharpener to indicates where fingers can go.

chinese chess set 3D design project
Design a complete chess set, includes chess pieces, playing board, container for the chess pieces. The objective is to design a chess set, explore materials that you will be building your chess set out of.
I decided to design a Chinese chess set. Chinese chess is what I grow up playing, and I’m more familiar to the rules and have more understanding of each chess pieces.
history of chinese chess and design intent
Chinese Chess, known as “Elephant Chess” or “Xiangqi” (pronounced “Shiang-Chi”) in China, is an ancient game nearly 2000 years old, and played by millions of people the world over. The game board consists of two sides: the “northern territory” (typically using blue pieces) and the “southern territory” (using red), separated by a space called “the river”. Each territory contains a “king’s palace”, and the objective it to capture your opponent’s king, while simultaneously protecting your own king. Each side starts with 16 pieces. Red moves first, and each side makes one move at a time.
I design chess pieces based on hierarchy of the animal kingdom. The two opponents will be carnivore and herbivore. The animals on the carnivore side are lion, bear, tiger, leopard, wolf, fox and mice. On the herbivore the animals are elephant, giraffe, rhino, hippo, horse, impala and rabbits. The material of my choice is sculpey. The chessboard itself is made out of wood with drawers on the opposite side for storing chess pieces. The grid on chessboard is inlayed copper wire. I carve Chinese characters into the back of each chess pieces, to follow the tradition of Chinese chess, and to distinguish from other figures.
concepts
I study the characteristic of each animal and the facial features, then abstract into simple forms that can still be recognize. I also put an arch on the back of each chess pieces for the user to move chess pieces easier. The Chinese characters that distinguish the chess pieces are carved on up side of the arch. It adds clarification and aesthetics to each piece.
1. using white sculpey clay for herbivore animal pieces, black sculpey clay for carnivore animal pieces. maple wood and walnut for chess board. 2. detail of herbivore pieces. 3. detail of carnivore pieces.

KTM trade show booth interior design project
project brief: Designing a tradeshow booth for a company of your choice, space dimensions are 10 feet by 10 feet by 25 feet ceiling height. Understand the brand of your choice and incorporate brand identity into the trade show booth design.
I choose KTM, motorcycle company as my brand of designing. KTM is a company who is expert in manufacturing racing motorcycles, including dirt bike, racing bike, and road bike. Recently KTM develop a two-passenger sports car, X bow. It is the company’s newest product. The function of this trade show booth is to advertise the new product, X bow. KTM hosts a lot of out door racing events. This is one way the company advertise their product.
inspiration
to show off KTM’s latest product, the x-bow, I choose to design a structure that is inspired by their tent and a traditional cathedral. I want the customers to be overwhelmed by the temple like structure when they get in. Also the slight elevation creates feel of seperation from the rest of the booth.
3/4 front view
3/4 back view
Design intent Designing a trade show booth to advertise their latest product X-bow, motorcycles and racing equipments. I design a center stage for the newest product X-bow, and second stage for the motorcycles. Three glass display shelves for equipments. A overhead digital control center is right above the X-bow. Two big screen LCDs are hang from the tent structure for introducing events and racing video clips. One projection canvas is stretched on the main display wall, for displaying X-bow. The entire tent structure is inspired by the outdoor tents they have when hosting racing events. This booth can use both indoor and outdoor in according.
