ANNUAL REPORT | FY ‘16-17
We are pleased to be reaching out to the community and sharing our annual report. We are very excited by the progress made this last year, and our report highlights the increasing impact of our work here in Tampa Bay. The challenges of food insecurity across our 10 counties is significant, and our response must be in equal measure. We are closing the second year of our strategic plan and when we ended this fiscal year, we were already in the midst of developing our next plan. Our work must always be moving forward. As we write this letter to you, we just celebrated our 35th anniversary – a milestone event for us in many ways. We’ve long been an important thread in the fabric of our community, if not often recognized for it. We celebrated the milestone on November 9th with an event at Feeding Tampa Bay among friends, colleagues and other guests. Like all missions, the consequential differences made by our organization have been because of the love and labor of many, both past and present. Over our history we’ve provided an astounding 395 million meals. In just the last five years alone we’ve provided over 150 million meals as we’ve sought to improve the health of our community. The past year saw development of several key initiatives, notably our fresh food and health focus. We set a goal of delivering more fresh produce to our families and we saw a marked increase throughout the year. We also worked hard to ensure our network of agencies could assist and so we secured assets to improve their capacity, too. In our partnership with USF, and other key community leaders, we continued our leadership work on understanding the root causes of hunger and food insecurity and the important tie between access to nutritious food and family health. It is in this work that we will achieve one of our main goals: a healthier Tampa Bay. At our anniversary celebration we welcomed in one of our founders, Mike Solomon. Mike shared some wonderful stories of our beginnings, but also reminded us why it was so important to take on the task of making sure our community had a food bank. It was affirming to hear and we carry on Mike’s legacy today here in Tampa Bay and we are ever reminded of two important ideas: first, that at the other end of every meal we provide is a person who is deserving of it. Most all of those we serve work, seek to pay their bills, and manage financial obligations that would buckle many of us. Second, we are mindful that every meal provided creates a profound difference in our community. Healthy meals lead directly to healthy neighborhoods, schools, senior centers and homes. For 35 years we’ve been here – the collective of the willing – in service to the community because no one should go hungry.

For years, Publix has donated time, money and food to Feeding Tampa Bay. This year, Publix Super Markets Charities expanded its support of this long-time partnership to include a donation of 12 refrigerated, pull-behind trailers. The trailers will be used to strengthen the distribution of Feeding Tampa Bay’s agenycy partners. Each trailer is temperature controlled, creating additional storage space for perishable foods and bringing fresh, nutritious meals to our hungry neighbors in Tampa Bay.
“Our partners at Publix support our mission on the front lines and behind the scenes,” says, Thomas Mantz, executive director of Feeding Tampa Bay. “With 1 in 7 adults and 1 in 4 children facing hunger in their daily lives, we need all hands on deck to tackle this issue. Publix not only donates food to provide these families, but also provides the infrastructure necessary to increase our distribution capabilities.” This increase in capacity will allow Feeding Tampa Bay and its network to increase the health of the families in our community by bringing more fresh fruits, vegetables and proteins to the table. The health of our community is made stronger when everyone has access to food. To ensure everyone has access to food, Feeding Tampa Bay must make sure its agency partners have the proper resources to make this happen. Transportation of food and produce is just as important as the produce itself. Together, Feeding Tampa Bay and Publix Super Markets Charities will continue to nourish our neighbors.
The Walmart Foundation granted Feeding Tampa Bay $50,000 to invest in equipment that would support the overall effort to increase perishable product distributed to the Tampa Bay area. This investment, passed along to Feeding Tampa Bay partner agencies, included coolers and freezers, thermometers and temperature calibration devices.
IMPACT Across the state of Florida there is an estimated 1 billion+ pounds of unclaimed produce each year and 40% of the produce in Florida never reaches a store or home. Farm to Fork, an initiative made possible through Allegany Franciscan Ministries, is a fresh food collection program that recovered 2,124,224 pounds of produce in one year, resulting in a 20% increase of fresh produce provided to the community served by Feeding Tampa Bay. Farm to Fork also aids Feeding Tampa Bay’s “foods to encourage” metric, used to measure the amount of healthy foods delivered to families as a percentage of overall food distributed.
