Vertical Farm
It is hard to argue that city farming is becoming an important solution for the cities around the world. Injecting a farm within a city not only brings fresh and healthy food, but also it can be a solution to the problems that have been discussed. I tried to make my proposal of a new Vertical Farm to be the most suitable for the environmental issues facing the world and London’s environment. Particularly, this project covered a variety of fields which are application of renewable energy, supply of fresh water for cultivation, efficient technologies for cultivation, relationship with society and contribution to environment for sustainable growth of the Vertical Farm. I do not think that London will become self-sufficient with food by just having one Vertical Farm. The probability is that the self-sufficient city is an ideal world. However, we once got our food from own gardens and public gardens during World War I and II (Haeg, 2008). These gardens were called Victoria Gardens or War Gardens. People suffered from a shortage of food due to the war, thus the kitchen gardens increased naturally. We have tried to solve it when we are aware of problems. I just hope that my proposal can be a starting point. Through this project, I hope that more people will become aware of the problems in the city, and find a solution to those problems.
