My father told me once, that convention would have us believe that failure signifies non-success, defeat, debacle, hopelessness, etc. What convention does not convey however, is that failure is also learning and perfecting; shedding of all that is irrelevant till one is left with only what one needs to meet the desired end. ‘Failure is getting hit on the shin, while trying to find one’s way in the dark,’ he had implied, in Gujarati.

CORPORATE OFFICE TYPE : Head office LEVEL : Academic | Individual | Architectural Thesis SEMESTER : 10th (January 2021 July 2021) LOCATION : Gandhinagar, India ROLE : Architectural designer SUPERVISOR : Rachna mehta (mehtarachna9@gmail.com) SITE AREA : 15,000 sqm. BUILDUP AREA : 6,000 sqm.

T

he initial idea for designing this office is to design an employee-centric office building. By creating all-encompassing workplace environments that consider comfort, sustainability, and health of employees and function correctly, and give appropriate amenities to the employees working there by giving as much recreational space as possible for the well-being of the employees. By working in this office, employees feel like they are at home and spend more time there. Which will benefit the whole company All the floors are used by different departments of the company. The idea is to provide open space to each department. By rotating each floor of the building, small terraces have been created that act as breakout space and cut out harsh sunlight as weather protection.

There is an atrium at the center of the building that helps cross-ventilate the entire space. At the ground level of the atrium, an amphitheater is provided, which acts as an informal gathering space and connects to the first floor.

Climate analysis for the facade is done with the help of environmental performance analysis software. Which shows that the north and east side of the building are less effected by solar radiation and has more daylight throughout the year, while the other sides are more effected by solar radiation

Hence, the north and east facade of the building has vertical concrete louvers that help control daylight and help ventilate the space. The west and south side of the building has a recessed small opening, which brings indirect light.

SELF SUSTAIN CAMPUS TYPE : Institute LEVEL : Academic | Group SEMESTER : 8th (February 2020 July 2020) LOCATION : Ahmedabad, India ROLE : Architectural designer CONTRIBUTION : Site planning, Design development, Desining Library and Cafe SUPERVISOR : Roma Almeida (sal.research.2019@gmail.com) SITE AREA : 65,000 sqm. BUILDUP AREA : 1,200 sqm. (Library), 700 sqm.(Canteen)

T

he program is to design a campus that educates people about climate change and spreads awareness about the environment. The site planning was done in a group of four people, and the main focus was to conserve water as much as possible. So at first, we analyze the contour to find ridges and valleys. Water channels were created to collect the surface water during monsoons. Building blocks were organized along the water channels, and each of them had its water reservoir for the storage of water which acted as the source of passive cooling.

The initial concept for developing the library was to use it for multipurpose activities. The ground floor of the building is open and utilized for exhibitions, and the water body inside the library helps to cool down the building during the hot summer months. Semi-open space and passive cooling are achieved with the help of a wind tower.

The library is supported by a simple steel structure and RCC slab, and it is covered with a curved green roof that collects rainwater.

The building is divided into three levels, the first of which is an exhibition room, followed by the library on the first floor and a semi-open space for a reading area on the terrace, and at the top of the library, there is an observation deck to enjoy the beautiful green campus.

The slab of both levels is extended roughly 1800mm, which works as a planter and weather protection, cutting off the intense sunlight in Ahmedabad's hot and dry climate and also helping support the facade of the building.

WEAVER'S INSTITUTE TYPE : Institute LEVEL : Academic | Individual SEMESTER : 5th (February 2018 July 2018) LOCATION : Patan, India ROLE : Architectural designer SUPERVISOR : Niranjan Khopker (utthanarch@gmail.com) SITE AREA : 7,000 sqm. BUILDUP AREA : 3,500 sqm.

P

atan is world-famous for the art of patola weaving, and only a few families now are continuing to make patola. So came the discussion of the design of designing an institute where students learn the art of patola. The basic idea was to separate administration and study blocks in the institute for the betterment experience of students and academic staff. Due to the course's practical nature, students spend most of their time in workshops, and hence it is kept towards the north to get maximum diffused light throughout the day. Vaults are designed to provide more volume and to take more light. The hollow clay pipe is used for the cavity inside the vault, which helps as insulation. .

Because of the harsh climate of Patan, this type of clay pipe is used for vaulted roof insulation, creating a cavity of roughly 75mm in the vault, which helps to cool the vault in summer.

EXHIBITATION CENTER TYPE : Exhibitation Center LEVEL : Academic | Individual SEMESTER : 3rd (February 2017 July 2017) LOCATION : Ahmedabad,India ROLE : Architectural designer SUPERVISOR : Suraj Kathe (surajkathe@rediffmail.com), Niranjan Khopker (utthanarch@gmail.com) SITE AREA : 4,000 sqm. BUILDUP AREA : 1,600 sqm.

T

he main challenge of the program is to study an existing building and its form and try to create the same kind of space and form to use the building for a different purpose. The pavilion I decided to study is the Skum Pavilion, designed by BIG Architect. The basic idea of this project is to make an exhibition space where children come and enjoy and play. The exhibition center is mainly used to exhibit toys. And fabric sphere here gives the impression of clouds and gives children the feeling that they are inside the cloud castle.

he Solaris at Valasd is a housing project of 50 bungalows at Valsad city in Gujarat in India. The client wanted to build a low-cost housing society with the look of contemporary and dynamic architecture, and hence the team decided to incorporate angles and metal in the design. The major work that I was assigned to is making working drawings, reviewing drawings, presenting and managing various agencies on-site, and solving problems on the site.
