Tate Chmielewski is a freelance director, cinematographer, editor, and photographer of Sterafilms. When Tate is not handling his camera, he is operating a fun and local doggy daycare, while still finding time to support his loving family. Tate is not afraid to take chances and has always encouraged creativity and unity. I am pleased to be a part of his work and even more pleased I could include his skills when creating this magazine. Liz Schmidt is a Northern Kentucky University design student and soon to be graduate. Liz Schmidt is also the lead graphic designer and illustrator of Trés Faux Magazine. I was visually allured by Mrs. Schmidt’s work when stumbling across her social media account. After hearing great feedback I instantly contacted Mrs. Schmidt, thus began the collaboration between us two. Liz “gets it,” and by that I mean she understands the current trends, marketing, and fresh ideas to set any business apart from competitors. Her humble professional approach reminds me of why I am honored to have Liz apart of the Trés Faux family. I look forward to growing and developing new projects in the future. KEEP THEM SQUARES UP OUT YOUR CIRCLE!
New Year, New Circle
Safe Circles
By: Shantel Pettway
I understand that gaining the trust of friends and letting go of people who have become dead weight can be hard – it takes time. Regardless of the discomfort you have to think about what is beneficial for yourself. Now I’m NOT promoting a “it ain’t nothing to cut that person off *snip snip*” mentality! What I am promoting is personal growth and the importance of surrounding awareness. You have the choice, between a friend group of people who can only hold your tea for a moment, but will spit it out when the opportunity benefits them; or you can have friends who cover your scars and then get you the help you need to be well. Your friends don’t always have to be sneaky, mean or rude for you to reevaluate them. You need to ask yourself what do they add to my life and what are the losses if they leave. And you don’t have to cut total communication with friends who you see don’t benefit, but you should limit the time you are being influenced by them.
Shantellsdb.com Tis the season for family gatherings, group dates, cappuccinos, and more importantly new year resolutions. Now listen, I’ve never been one to criticize the “new year, new me” folk because I’ve neverseen the problem with accessing your past and adapting a new mindset to breed more gains in the New Year. Heck, we all should level up and have a new mindset, new surroundings and new perspective when we move forward in our lives. But the one thing that so commonly holds us back is our friends. Rapper Rocko said it best KEEP THEM SQUARES UP OUT YOUR CIRCLE! Have you ever noticed that your slang and lingo quickly and unknowingly spreads within your friend group? No one ever means for it to happen, but it does. See, a lot of the times we think we are above conformity. We believe that despite who is around we can stay true to our values without bending. I beg to differ. There’s a saying “if five of your friends are broke you’re probably the sixth.” As logical as that sounds you’ll have people argue you down that amongst their broke friends they are rich. Honestly you become who you are around, and if you are rich with broke friends share the plan. If you can’t share it are you a real friend. So, in the New Year you need to make sure you are keeping your circle safe and strategic. Strategy Circles Kahlana Barfield, editor and chief of beauty at Instyle Magazine is a prime example of why being strategic about who you surround yourself around can propel you or postpone you. In an interview Barfield revealed that her friends in fashion were the same people pushing her to continue to in beauty. For her, having the right people in her corner pushed her to her dreams. Notice that her friends were in the industry and their advice and encouragement came from a solid place.Barfield also tells of her journey story from internship to joblessness and homelessness. Even with those odds against her it was her sorority sister who allowed her to live with her, where she slept on a air mattress and a friend who told her about an open position at Instyle. See, the thing is if you aren’t intentional about who you allow to have your time and who you entrust with your dreams you will forever be in neutral. One tip for the New Year is to BE STRATEGIC ABOUT YOUR CIRCLE. Another tip is to SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE WHERE YOU WANT TO BE. You can only go so far with the knowledge of the people on the same level as you, you have to be intentional when you meet people and foster relationships with them.
The Bible host a story in Mark chapter two that illustrates perfectly why your friends play a major role in your success or failure. The story has five main characters. All of the characters are friends. One of the characters is paralyzed and the other four friends want to help him. The friends hear that Jesus, who had been performing miracles in their region was in their town. They didn’t hesitate to bring their friend where the healing was, but when they arrived the place was packed. Did that stop them? No. Somehow the friends climbed on the roof and lowered their friend down so that their friend could get what he needed. “4 Since they were unable to get to Jesus through the crowd, they uncovered the roof above Him, made an opening, and lowered the paralytic on his mat. 5When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic,“Son, your sins are forgiven.”… You don’t have to believe in Jesus or the Bible to understand the big picture in this story. Their faith made him well. The faith of the paralyzed man wasn’t noticed, but that of his friends was. How amazing is that. A lot of the times we’ve sat in park for so long we don’t believe in drive anymore. We wallow in our on pity and sometimes our friends intensify it by telling their stories of defeat without offering you confidence that BETTER IS COMING. You need friends like the man in Mark. Ones who won’t give up on you when you’ve given up on yourself and pick you up so you can access your destiny. If you want to be sure you have supportive friends one tip is RECALL HOW MUCH THE COMPLAIN TO YOU COMPARED TO HOW THEY CONFIRM YOU. It’s draining being the friend who is always strong, but you can’t rely on anyone in your friend group. So, a new year is approaching us which friend will you be and which friend will you choose? This very first edition is dedicated to all of my first time readers. I encourage all of you to chase your dreams no matter your flaws or what you think might limit you. In this magazine lies blood, sweat, tears, and most importantly passion. I wanted to create an avenue for people to connect and relate. I wanted to bring hope to those who have aspirations to make it big in the art community. Im far from where I want to be, but I am closer than I have ever been before. One foot forward is always better than one step back. Get up; get active, find your passion, and GO! Blessings to all my readers. God loves you and so do I!
