a brand new listening experience

starts here

You told us that the best part of listening to live music at Jazz at the Bistro is the room’s intimacy. We have reconfigured the room to create an even more intimate atmosphere for you, the audience, and the artists on stage. • The farthest seats from the stage will be 30 feet closer than before, enhancing the intimate feel that patrons know and love, while giving everyone the best seat in the house. • A reconfigured stage and balcony layout will expand capacity from 150 to 220 seats and allow for unobstructed views of the entire stage from just 25 feet away. • Acoustical design from Sam Berkow of SIA Acoustics—whose work includes Jazz at Lincoln Center and the SFJazz Center—will ensure that the music you came to hear is outstanding no matter where you sit. • A state-of-the-art sound system and brand new grand piano will bring those acoustical treatments to life. • Inspired by the sounds of the ‘50s and ‘60s, the streamlined interior by Jamieson Design will be composed of classic-modern styling and offer every guest clean, uninterrupted sightlines. • Kitchen access from the back of the house, behind-the-scenes bus and service stations, and a box office in the foyer lets you focus on the music— distraction-free. • The entire facility will now be fully accessible with an elevator, groundlevel entrance, and restroom facilities on all floors. With these improvements, Jazz at the Bistro will not only sit atop the list of great jazz clubs, but of great music rooms around the world. 5

His music can be challenging, provocative, and forward-thinking, but also hard-swinging, melodic, and soulful, with a strong link to the jazz idioms of the 1950s and ’60s. He and his band, long-time collaborators Reuben Rogers on bass and Gregory Hutchinson on drums, demand serious energy and engagement of themselves and their listeners, creating music with a joyous and celebratory spirit. “…both timeless and fresh…they are simply smoking.” AllAboutJazz.com Dave Matthews Band saxophonist Jeff Coffin, best known for his 14 years with Béla Fleck & the Flecktones, leads the Mu’tet, a group that takes its name from the word ‘mutation,’ reflecting Coffin’s idea that music must continue to change and mutate in order to grow. Joey DeFrancesco Trio December 3-6, 2014

Not much in jazz combines the churchy moan and shaking hip like a Hammond B-3 organ, and Joey DeFrancesco is one of its modern masters. Playing with Hank Mobley and “Philly” Joe Jones at just 10 years old, and joining Miles Davis’s band at 17, DeFrancesco has had a storied career that has seen him travel the world with some of the greatest

The Bad Plus has spent over 15 years redefining what a piano-bass-drums trio can and should be. They’ve reached audiences of all demographic stripes with genre-defying music that is at once complex, heartfelt, humorous, and instantly engaging. Featuring bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson and drummer David King, The Bad Plus is a leaderless trio with a committed belief in what they’ve dubbed ‘avant-garde populism’ — the idea that serious music can be as engaging and accessible as it is forward-thinking and provocative. “This band contains some of the most punk energy I’ve ever seen or felt as a musician — it just doesn’t need to do it so obviously,” says David King. “That’s our statement. Regina Carter’s Southern Comfort

Exclusively Sponsored by

“Regina Carter creates music that is wonderfully listenable, probingly intelligent and, at times, breathtakingly daring... taking the listener into the future of jazz.”

May 13-16, 2015

Time Magazine

Regina Carter’s Southern Comfort features a lush array of tunes based on folk, blues, and jazz, all focused on her family’s history through a modern lens. For this project, Carter heavily researched field recordings of folklorists like Alan Lomax and John Work III at the Library of Congress to discover the music that her paternal grandfather, who

worked as a coal miner in Alabama, would have heard in the Deep South during the first half of the 20th century. Inspired by those sounds, Carter deftly opens up marches, dirges, and ballads to her improvisatory style with a tone that is lighter here than her usual dark amber hue, but with playing that is just as captivating as ever.

Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio with Lionel Loueke Dr. Lonnie Smith is an unparalleled musician. An authentic guru of the Hammond B-3 organ for over five decades, his arrangements of songs reveal an R&B background as well as his affinity for funk and gospel. With a theatrical stage presence that wins over audiences, and a dynamic range and hardgrooving sound that blows their minds, Dr. Lonnie Smith is the hippest Hammond B-3 organist on the scene today.

May 27-30, 2015 “…you’re listening to a genius.” The New York Times

With a velvety West African French–accented baritone, guitarist and vocalist Lionel Loueke exudes a seductive effortlessness. He can play fast and loud, but it’s nearly impossible to imagine him ever fretting over a difficult passage. His music smolders with controlled intensity; clicking and whistling with his vocals and tapping and scratching his guitar, all while carefully orchestrating loops and harmonizing effects. Praised by his mentor Herbie Hancock as “a musical painter,” Loueke combines harmonic complexity, soaring melody, and a deep knowledge of African folk forms, with extended guitar techniques to create a warm and evocative sound never before heard. This rare pairing combines the music of West Africa with African American music and jazz in unexpected and exciting ways.

Branford Marsalis February 9, 2015 NEA Jazz Master, renowned Grammy Award-winning saxophonist, and Tony Award nominee, Branford Marsalis is one of the most revered instrumentalists of his time. Leader of one of the finest jazz quartets today, and a frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Marsalis and his Quartet of musical friends released Four MFs Playin’ Tunes. On this most current album, the song takes center

stage, with the band members bringing their considerable musical expertise to bear, as they focus on each tune as an important musical entity unto itself and not merely a vehicle for showcasing individual talent. Please join us for an astounding performance of one of the most innovative and forwardthinking jazz ensembles around today!

Sophisticated arrangements and attention to phrasing, both vocal and instrumental, further distinguish the band’s fresh sound. Bode consistently wins over audiences with her sweet personality and sincere performances, the perfect combination to celebrate this romantic holiday.

The happiness that he exudes through his trumpet, his vocals, and his words is reminiscent of Louis Armstrong, yet very much his own.

frequently asked questions Do you have food at the Bistro? Yes, food and drinks are available at all Jazz at the Bistro performances. Guests attending the 7:30 p.m. performances can arrive as early as 6:00 p.m. and sit at their ticketed table. We also serve food and drinks throughout the performance, so even if you arrive just five minutes before the show, you won’t go hungry. 9:30 p.m. attendees are seated starting at 9:00 p.m. and can order at that time and throughout the show or arrive early and dine in the Jazz Lounge. Does a meal come with the price of the ticket? No. Your ticket covers the performance. Dinner and drinks are a separate charge.

Can I get a refund if I can’t come to a show? Jazz at the Bistro tickets are nonrefundable unless a show is cancelled. Pending availability, you can exchange tickets for a different performance night with the same artist for a fee of $5 per ticket (this exchange privilege is complimentary for subscribers).

Along with the changes to the Jazz at the Bistro venue and restaurant, and with additional amenities, there will likely be some growing pains and unknown changes to policy and procedure as we get our fresh start. We ask for your understanding during this time and that you visit our website at www.jazzstl.org for the most up-to-date information.

jazz st. louis education programs The future of jazz starts here. Jazz St. Louis offers a variety of education and outreach programs designed to introduce young people to the uniquely American art of jazz. Whether those students go on to become jazz musicians or arm-chair enthusiasts, the future of the music is dependent upon the cultivation of future generations of jazz audiences.

43

JazzU Made possible by a lead contribution from Monsanto Fund with support from the Arthur and Helen Baer Foundation, Ameren Missouri, and the Staenberg Family Foundation, JazzU places talented middle and high school musicians in small jazz combos, which meet weekly between September and May. Aside from the benefit of weekly instruction from JazzU faculty members, students have the opportunity to meet and work with musicians who perform on the Jazz at the Bistro stage, as well as those participating in Jazz St. Louis’s Artist Residency program. This has included musicians such as Terell Stafford, Jon Faddis, Cyrus Chestnut, Ronald Carter, Esperanza Spalding, and the Clayton Brothers.

Ethan Iverson of The Bad Plus works with a JazzU student during a recent artist residency.

Visiting artists participate in a number of different activities, including performances, master classes, and clinics. Bringing internationally-renowned jazz musicians into the schools is a great way to introduce young students to this great American art form. All 18 artists in the Jazz at the Bistro Subscription Series are contracted to participate in an education event in addition to their performances at the Bistro. 45

Artist Residencies Made possible through funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, Artist Residencies bring the best musicians and educators to St. Louis to work with students in more intensive, small-group settings. Jazz St. Louis’s Residency Artists are national performers and educators dedicated to securing the future of jazz through outreach and in-school performances. Jazz St. Louis engages these artists for an entire week, during which they visit area schools and conduct master classes and clinics for middle and high school musicians, allowing for more hands-on coaching. At the elementary level, residency artists perform in-school, introducing many

young people to jazz for the first time while teaching them about the great art form. These artists cap off their week in St. Louis with either performances on the Jazz at the Bistro stage or free community concerts held at various venues throughout the area.
