Welcome to Jazz St. Louis’s 20th Jazz St. Louis has experienced a dramatic evolution since Barbara Rose first established a world-class jazz club in 1995. Over the past 19 seasons, we have grown Jazz at the Bistro and Jazz St. Louis into an internationally-recognized jazz presenter responsible for nearly 300 performances a year. We have also gone on to become a top jazz education institution, reaching more than 140,000 students since the year 2000 through inschool performances and master classes, youth concerts, student ensembles, and more. Jazz at the Bistro subscribers have a vital impact on our ability to reach those students and raise up the next generation of jazz musicians and enthusiasts. Now entering our 20th season of presenting the best in live jazz, not only do we have a great lineup of musicians scheduled to perform, Jazz St. Louis will be opening the brand new Harold & Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz, which you will read about on the following pages. We have reconfigured the room to create an even more intimate atmosphere for you, the audience, and the artists on stage. • The farthest seats from the stage will be 30 feet closer than before, enhancing the intimate feel that patrons know and love, while giving everyone the best seat in the house. • A reconfigured stage and balcony layout will expand capacity from 150 to 220 seats and allow for unobstructed views of the entire stage from just 25 feet away. • Acoustical design from Sam Berkow of SIA Acoustics—whose work includes Jazz at Lincoln Center and the SFJazz Center—will ensure that the music you came to hear is outstanding no matter where you sit. • A state-of-the-art sound system and brand new grand piano will bring those acoustical treatments to life. • Inspired by the sounds of the ‘50s and ‘60s, the streamlined interior by Jamieson Design will be composed of classic-modern styling and offer every guest clean, uninterrupted sightlines. • Kitchen access from the back of the house, behind-the-scenes bus and service stations, and a box office in the foyer lets you focus on the music— distraction-free. • The entire facility will now be fully accessible with an elevator, groundlevel entrance, and restroom facilities on all floors. frequently asked questions Do you have food at the Bistro? Yes, food and drinks are available at all Jazz at the Bistro performances. Guests attending the 7:30 p.m. performances can arrive as early as 6:00 p.m. and sit at their ticketed table. We also serve food and drinks throughout the performance, so even if you arrive just five minutes before the show, you won’t go hungry. 9:30 p.m. attendees are seated starting at 9:00 p.m. and can order at that time and throughout the show or arrive early and dine in the Jazz Lounge. Does a meal come with the price of the ticket? No. Your ticket covers the performance. Dinner and drinks are a separate charge.

Can I get a refund if I can’t come to a show? Jazz at the Bistro tickets are nonrefundable unless a show is cancelled. Pending availability, you can exchange tickets for a different performance night with the same artist for a fee of $5 per ticket (this exchange privilege is complimentary for subscribers).

Where is the Bistro located? The Harold & Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz, home of the Ferring Jazz Bistro, is located at 3536 Washington Avenue (at Grand Avenue), just across from the Fox Theater.

Where can I park? Valet parking is available for all Jazz at the Bistro performances (complimentary for subscribers!). The Grand Center Arts District also has several pay lots available for most shows. There is also on-street parking, with meters running until 7:00 p.m. Do you have a dress code? No. However, most of our patrons feel most comfortable in business casual attire. Will I be sitting with other people? Jazz at the Bistro uses family-style seating, so unless you have purchased all of the tickets at a table, there will likely be people joining you. Can I stay for the second set if I bought a ticket for the first set? While we try to let you stay for the second set at no additional charge as often as possible, there will be times when there is not enough availability to do so. An announcement will be made after the first set to let you know whether you can stay for free or with the purchase of a discounted or full-priced ticket. Are there any age restrictions? No. The Ferring Jazz Bistro is an all-ages venue. Can I take pictures? You may take non-flash photos for most performances. However, please be mindful of the light and noise that comes from your camera as to not disturb the people around you. How long are the performances? Performances last approximately 70 minutes.

What time can I get there? Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for 7:30 p.m. performances, and at 9:00 p.m. for 9:30 p.m. sets. Second set guests are welcome to arrive at the Jazz Lounge before 9:00 p.m.

Jazz St. Louis offers a variety of education and outreach programs designed to introduce young people to the uniquely American art of jazz. Whether those students go on to become jazz musicians or arm-chair enthusiasts, the future of the music is dependent upon the cultivation of future generations of jazz audiences.

JazzU Made possible by a lead contribution from Monsanto Fund with support from the Arthur and Helen Baer Foundation, Ameren Missouri, and the Staenberg Family Foundation, JazzU places talented middle and high school musicians in small jazz combos, which meet weekly between September and May. Aside from the benefit of weekly instruction from JazzU faculty members, students have the opportunity to meet and work with musicians who perform on the Jazz at the Bistro stage, as well as those participating in Jazz St. Louisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Artist Residency program. This has included musicians such as Terell Stafford, Jon Faddis, Cyrus Chestnut, Ronald Carter, Esperanza Spalding, and the Clayton Brothers.

Visiting artists participate in a number of different activities, including performances, master classes, and clinics. Bringing internationally-renowned jazz musicians into the schools is a great way to introduce young students to this great American art form. All 18 artists in the Jazz at the Bistro Subscription Series are contracted to participate in an education event in addition to their performances at the Bistro. 45

Artist Residencies Made possible through funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, Artist Residencies bring the best musicians and educators to St. Louis to work with students in more intensive, small-group settings. Jazz St. Louisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Residency Artists are national performers and educators dedicated to securing the future of jazz through outreach and in-school performances. Jazz St. Louis engages these artists for an entire week, during which they visit area schools and conduct master classes and clinics for middle and high school musicians, allowing for more hands-on coaching. At the elementary level, residency artists perform in-school, introducing many

young people to jazz for the first time while teaching them about the great art form. These artists cap off their week in St. Louis with either performances on the Jazz at the Bistro stage or free community concerts held at various venues throughout the area.

Miles Davis and the Blue Flame Incident October 6 | 9 a.m. | Grades 6–12 This exciting, live multi-media program, cocommissioned by Jazz St. Louis, celebrates the ground-breaking achievements of the iconic trumpeter, bandleader, and cultural provocateur, Miles Davis. The program traverses Davis‘s extensive career and features music from some of the most creatively fertile periods of his career, including his controversial divergence into electric music.

ELLINGTON! October 6 | 11:30 a.m. | Grades 3–6 October 7 | 9 a.m. | Grades 3–6 ELLINGTON! is a highly engaging multi-media program that illuminates the rich, vital legacy of the great American composer, pianist, and bandleader, Duke Ellington.

Hangin’ with the Giants October 7 | 11:30 a.m. | Grades K–4 This fun, high-energy program is designed to promote the inclusiveness and accessibility of jazz while highlighting the legacies and music of some of the art form’s central contributors. Staged as a late night talk show, Hangin’ with the Giants features animated likenesses of jazz greats Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk as show guests and offers numerous opportunities for students to interact and participate.
