Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends June 2 – July 21 2013

Strive together with me in your prayers. Romans 15:30

Fall On Your Knees Do you find prayer doesn’t always come easily? If so, you are in good company. In Romans 15:30, Paul writes, “Strive together with me in your prayers.” Even the Apostle Paul describes prayer as something to strive at. It requires effort and work. Elsewhere we are instructed, “Devote yourselves to prayer” (Colossians 4:2). How would you describe your striving and devotion to prayer? It seems clear from Scripture that the heart of God aches over our distance from him. He longs for us to draw near to him, and yet we so consistently offer instead our busyness, distraction and obsession with just about anything and everything except God. Why not be preoccupied with prayer? Looking around, we all know of people who are football fanatics, exercise buffs, quilting maniacs, non-fiction novel nerds, and video game-a-holics! Welcome, dear Friends, to a much needed and hopefully very exciting adventure. We want to encourage you, as part of NWYM, to join us over these next 50 days to “strive together” in prayer. Please join us through these daily journal pages in seeking God’s heart in prayer. As you do, know that God longs for us to draw near to him. Adapted from Fall on Our Knees, prepared by Ken Redford, pastor, Meridian Friends Church.

Getting Started Here are four ways you are invited to take part in our Fall on Your Knees series: 1. Enjoy daily T.A.W.G.—You are encouraged to find time in your schedule each day to spend Time Alone With God. This prayer journal contains daily scripture readings and help for practicing your T.A.W.G. 2. Attend Sunday morning meeting for worship—Corporate worship can offer encouragement and challenge for this prayer journey. Pay particular attention to open worship, a time specifically given over to prayer and listening to Christ together. 3. Experience small group life—Small groups are regular gatherings of between 4-10 people who meet at least weekly in order to develop community, intimacy, and spiritual growth. If you aren’t already part of a small group, consider starting one. You can meet with people you are already in relationship with, or you can challenge yourself by seeing this as an opportunity to build new relationships. 4. Practice some new prayer disciplines—In these pages, we are encouraging you to join in a few spiritual practices (one challenge per week) that can help you develop your prayer life. In the daily pages of this prayer journal there are practical ideas and tools for each challenge. Let us pray!

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Sunday, June 2 WEEK 1: Practicing The Lord’s Prayer

Limited space is given for you to write your responses on these guidebook pages. You may wish to purchase a notebook or write your thoughts in a separate prayer journal. This week’s prayer discipline: Each day this week you are invited to recite the Lord’s Prayer three times each day (see page 2). “Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress” (Psalm 55:17). Set three appointments to keep focus with the Lord each day this week. Take this time to recite the Lord’s Prayer as a way of lifting your stress and your day to God. You might choose to pray silently, sing it, speak it, whisper it or write it down as you feel led. Each morning this week: Each afternoon this week: Each evening this week:

_______AM _______PM _______PM

Spend some time in silence before God. Invite him to speak to you. Write down your reflections and/or questions from this time. YM prayer focus: 2nd Street Community (Newberg, OR) and their leaders; Scotts Mills (Scotts Mills, OR) and their leaders.

Monday, June 3 WEEK 1: Practicing The Lord’s Prayer

Read Luke 11:1-13 What stands out to you from this reading? Take some time to prayerfully ask the Lord to speak to you from his word. The Lord’s Prayer begins with the simple address, “Our Father.” What does it mean to you that God is your father? Jesus goes on to describe his Father, explaining he is the Father who is “in heaven.” God is like an earthly father in so many ways, and yet he is unlike all fathers “in earth” in that he is perfect. He will never fail us, abandon us or abuse our trust. A good father, a heavenly Father, gives life and sustains it. What do you need from your Heavenly Father today? What would you want to say to him in prayer? Recite the Lord’s Prayer three times today. Have you made plans to meet with your small group this week? Write down a prayer request that you want your small group to pray over and share it with them.

YM prayer focus: Anthem (Hayden Lake, ID) and their leaders; Sherwood (Sherwood, OR) and their leaders.

Tuesday, June 4 WEEK 1: Practicing The Lord’s Prayer

Re-read Luke 11:1-13 How is God speaking to you today from these words? What questions do you have from this passage that you might share with your small group this week? Jesus continues this prayer with much emphasis on the Father… “Hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done.” We talk a lot as Christians about ‘putting God first.’ What would it look like for you to put God’s priorities first today? In your schedule today? In your family today? In your finances today? In your thoughts today? In your words today? In your actions today? As you recite the Lord’s Prayer today, be mindful of how Jesus is leading you to put him first. Consult your church’s avenue for sharing prayer requests. Take time to lift up the needs of your church family. YM prayer focus: Art House (Dorena, OR) and their leaders; Silverton (Silverton, OR) and their leaders.

Wednesday, June 5 WEEK 1: Practicing The Lord’s Prayer

Re-read Luke 11:1-13 When Jesus prayed “Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us,” he is inviting us to ask God to only forgive us to the extent we have forgiven others. Is there someone you need to forgive? The Lord’s Prayer connects “heaven” and “earth” by inviting us to align our everyday affairs (things like relationships and forgiveness and even “daily bread” or physical needs) to heavenly concerns (like God’s will being done and his name being honored). Is Jesus in control of your daily life? Do you stop to pray about relationships that are strained? Do you pray about your daily needs, your bills or finances (daily bread)? Recite the Lord’s Prayer three times today. Spend some time in silence before God. Invite him to speak to you. Write down your reflections and/or questions from this time. If you would ask anything of Jesus today, what would it be? If Jesus would ask anything of you today, what would it be? YM prayer focus: Boise (Boise, ID) and their leaders; South Salem (Salem, OR) and their leaders.

Thursday, June 6 WEEK 1: Practicing The Lord’s Prayer

Bible reading: Matthew 6:5-15 What stands out to you from today’s Bible reading? What does it mean for you to “go into your room and close the door?” What is an area in your life where you need to ask for his will to be done (over your own will)? What temptation do you need help with? Ask for God’s strength. If you are struggling with a temptation today, read and memorize a beautiful promise from God’s word found in I Corinthians 13, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so you can endure it.” Recite the Lord’s Prayer three times today. Spend some time in silence before God. Invite him to speak to you. Write down your reflections and/or questions from this time. YM prayer focus: Bridges (Hayden Lake, ID) and their leaders; Spokane (Spokane, WA) and their leaders.

Friday, June 7 WEEK 1: Practicing The Lord’s Prayer

Re-read Matthew 6:5-15 What has God been teaching you this week through this time spent reciting and reading the Lord’s Prayer? Find a friend you can share your insights or questions with. Recite the Lord’s Prayer three times today. This practice of reciting the Lord’s Prayer may seem very foreign (even uncomfortable) to some. What have you gained through this discipline this week? How has it informed your understanding of prayer? What insights or questions from this exercise might you bring to next week’s small group meeting? Ask someone in your family how you can pray for them today and take some time to do that “on the spot” with them. YM prayer focus: Caldwell (Caldwell, ID) and their leaders; Sprague River (Sprague River, OR) and their leaders.

Saturday, June 8 Preparing for tomorrow’s Sabbath day of worship

As you pray today, ask the Lord to prepare your heart for worship. From this passage we are encouraged to carry each other’s burdens and to do good to others. Who in your life needs you to help them carry a burden? What would that look like for you and your friend? Is Sunday morning hectic in your house? Some have found help by: planning an earlier arrival time, setting out the kids’ clothes on Saturday night, or by setting the alarm earlier. Other ideas? As you prepare for corporate worship tomorrow, is there someone God has placed on your heart: • To invite to worship tomorrow? (Perhaps you could invite them to share a meal after service?) • Whom you haven’t seen for a while in worship? (Ditto) • You are in conflict with and need to contact as the Lord directs? (See Matthew 5:23-26) Let’s pray for one another! Identify and write down a prayer request that you want your church family to pray over and share it through the appropriate channel. YM prayer focus: Camas (Camas, WA) and their leaders; Star Community (Star, ID) and their leaders.

13

8

Sunday, June 9 WEEK 2: Practicing “on the spot” prayer

You are invited to accept a daily challenge to pray aloud and “on the spot” with at least one other person each day this week. So often when we hear someone share a need or concern with us, we respond “I will pray for you.” That’s good, but wouldn’t it be even better to reply “Let’s pray.” If you want to be intentional to try this out as a daily exercise this week, then chances are you will need to create the situation by initiating a visit or a phone call in which you ask another person how you can be in prayer for them. This other person could be a family member, a member of your small group, someone from the church, or it could happen spontaneously as you encounter someone telling you about their needs. May the Lord direct your steps to be a blessing to others each day this week. Galatians 6:2 encourages us, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Who needs your prayer and encouragement? Take a few moments to list the names of several people in your life who are carrying burdens. Begin asking the Lord to open your heart toward praying for and even with them this week. YM prayer focus: Cherry Grove (Battle Ground, WA) and their leaders; Talent (Talent, OR) and their leaders.

14

9

Monday, June 10 WEEK 2: Practicing “on the spot” prayer

Read Ephesians 6:18-20 When should we pray? Paul writes that we are to pray “with all kinds of prayers and requests.” What does that mean? Can you list some different types of prayers? What does it mean for you to be alert? Prayerfully identify someone whom you would be willing to contact today to offer to pray “on the spot” with them. When and how will you contact them today? Write down a prayer request that you want your small group to pray over and share that with them.

YM prayer focus: City’s Edge (Beaverton, OR) and their leaders; Tigard (Tigard, OR) and their leaders.

15

10

Tuesday, June 11 WEEK 2: Practicing “on the spot”prayer

Read Exodus 34:8-15 Before bringing to God his requests, Moses demonstrated reverence by bowing down. Take a moment to express reverence to God. In verse 8, Moses asks for God’s undeserved favor on other people. Who do you know that needs someone to “stand in the gap” in prayer for them? Make a list of people in your life who need your intercessory prayer. Contact someone today and offer to pray “on the spot.” Are you willing to be responsive today to unplanned opportunities for spontaneous prayer? Consult your church’s avenue to share prayer requests. Take time to lift up the needs of your church family.

YM prayer focus: Clackamas Park (Milwaukie, OR) and their leaders; Valley (Mount Vernon, WA) and their leaders.

16

11

Wednesday, June 12 WEEK 2: Practicing “on the spot” prayer

Read Ezekiel 22:23-31 How is this description of society similar to the one we live in today? What is God looking for (v. 30)? Is he still looking for the same thing? What does this suggest about the importance of our prayer? Prayerfully identify someone whom you would be willing to contact today to offer to pray “on the spot” with them. Spend some time in silence before God. Invite him to speak to you. Write down your reflections and/or questions from this time. Contact someone today and offer to pray “on the spot.” Are you willing to be responsive today to unplanned opportunities for spontaneous prayer? When and how will you contact them today?

YM prayer focus: Crossroads Community (Astoria, OR) and their leaders; Vancouver (Vancouver, WA) and their leaders.

17

12

Thursday, June 13 WEEK 2: Practicing “on the spot” prayer

Read Hebrews 10:19-25 It seems clear from this passage that there is a connection between “drawing near to God” and “meeting together.” Who needs your face to face encouragement today? Verse 24 challenges us “and let us consider.” Take a few minutes to ponder ways you can be of encouragement today. As part of that, be prayerful that God will open an opportunity to pray with and for someone today. Prayerfully ask the Lord if there’s someone he may want you to invite to church. Is there someone in our church family whom haven’t seen for a while in worship? Is there a newcomer on your heart who may appreciate the gesture of welcome? Contact someone today and offer to pray “on the spot.” Are you willing to be responsive today to unplanned opportunities for spontaneous prayer?

YM prayer focus: Destiny (Long Beach, WA) and their leaders; West Chehalem (Newberg, OR) and their leaders.

18

13

Friday, June 14 WEEK 2: Practicing “on the spot” prayer

Read Mark 14:32-42 What does Jesus ask here of his followers? Why did they fail? Can you identify with Jesus’ followers here? How does Jesus feel about our prayerlessness? What is the connection between temptation and prayer? Prayerfully identify someone whom you would be willing to contact today to offer to pray “on the spot” with them. When and how will you contact them today?

YM prayer focus: East Hill (Kent, WA) and their leaders; West Hills (Portland, OR) and their leaders.

19

14

Saturday, June 15 Preparing for tomorrow’s Sabbath day of worship

Read Acts 15:1-21 This passage represents a formal church business meeting. Notice how these early believers took time to meet together to discuss their differences, to pray, and to seek God’s direction. Friends meetings for business is a time for all of us to practice prayer and listening to Jesus’ voice together. Pray for your presiding clerk, that s/he will be sensitive to the voices of others and to the leading of the Spirit. Query 5 Are meetings for worship and business duly held, and are you regular in attending them? Do you come ready to commune with God and to fellowship with believers, willing to participate in contemplation or in spoken ministry? Let’s pray for one another! Identify and write down a prayer request that you want your church family to pray over and share it through the appropriate channel.

YM prayer focus: Entiat (Entiat, WA) and their leaders.

20

15

Sunday, June 16 WEEK 3: Practicing everyday thanksgiving

Read Psalm 145 reflectively How is God speaking to you through the words of this scripture? We believe God is constantly at work and involved in our lives. The trouble is, we are too busy to notice. How many blessings have you enjoyed in the course of this day already? Have you remembered to give God thanks? Simple, everyday examples could include waking up this morning, vision, hearing, a warm shower, coffee, the ability to walk, read, etc. This week, we invite you to identify 150 reasons to give God thanks! You are invited to start today – on this Sabbath day of worship and rest. With a prayerful heart, write down 25 reasons to give God thanks today

YM prayer focus: Eugene (Eugene, OR) and their leaders.

16

Monday, June 17 WEEK 3: Practicing everyday thanksgiving

This week we invite you to slow down with Psalm 145. This Psalm offers a beautiful example of worshipping God through prayer. Contained in this prayer are so many reasons to give God thanks. Read Psalm 145:1-2 How often does David promise to extol the name of God? How would each day be different for you if you started it by reflecting on who God is? “Extol” means to glorify or to “make known.” As you work on your thanksgiving lists this week, know that your sharing this good news with others is a way of making God and his work known. Challenge: Extol God today by being intentional to tell someone else why you find him worthy of your praise! Write down a prayer request that you want your small group to pray over and share it with them. With a prayerful heart, write down 25 reasons to give God thanks today. YM prayer focus: Friends Church of the Valley (Cave Junction, OR) and their leaders.

23

17

Tuesday, June 18 WEEK 3: Practicing everyday thanksgiving

Read Psalm 145:3-7 The Bible says we are to worship God by telling the next generation. Take some time to pray today for our youth workers, children’s ministries coordinator and Sunday School teachers. Are you faithful to pray for these people. Are you good at “telling” the next generation? Take some time to pray for someone who is younger than you are. Pray for their salvation and that God will protect and direct their steps. For suggestions, visit http://www.parentingonmyknees.blogspot.com. Challenge: Extol God today by telling this younger person that you prayed for him/her today (post on their Facebook wall, write a letter or call them). Consult your church’s avenue to share prayer requests. Take time to lift up the needs of your church family. With a prayerful heart, write down 25 reasons to give God thanks today. YM prayer focus: Friends House (Nampa, ID) and their leaders.

24

18

Wednesday, June 19 WEEK 3: Practicing everyday thanksgiving

Read Psalm 145:8-12 What stands out to you from this Bible passage? How have you experienced God’s compassion over the last 12 months? This week? In the last hour? Challenge: “Speak of his might.” Come to your small group and/or Sunday morning worship ready to tell how you are experiencing God’s love in your daily life right now. Spend some time in silence before God. Invite him to speak to you. Write down our reflections and/or questions from this time. With a prayerful heart, write down 25 reasons to give God thanks today. YM prayer focus: Greenleaf (Greenleaf, ID) and their leaders.

25

19

Thursday, June 20 WEEK 3: Practicing everyday thanksgiving

Read Psalm 145:13-17 “You give them their food at the proper time” (v. 15). Describe a time when you experienced God’s perfect timing? What was your prayer like before you saw evidence of God’s provision? What was it like after? Part of worshipping God is remembering to thank him. How can you thank God for his timing in your life? Spend some time in silence before God. Invite him to speak to you. Write down your reflections and/or questions from this time. With a prayerful heart, write down 25 reasons to give God thanks today. YM prayer focus: Hillsboro (Hillsboro, OR) and their leaders.

26

20

Friday, June 21 WEEK 3: Practicing everyday thanksgiving

Read Psalm 145:18-21 What stands out to you in reading this passage? Name at least five promises contained in this prayer of David (in verses 18-21). Try “praying the scripture.” Take Psalm 145 and speak it to the Lord, changing and/or inserting pronouns as appropriate, for instance, your prayer might start this way: “I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name forever and ever. Every day I will praise you and extol your name forever and ever.” (So far unchanged.) “Great is YOUR name, O Lord, and most worthy of praise; YOUR greatness…” etc. Ask someone in your family how you can pray for them today and take some time to do that “on the spot” with them. With a prayerful heart, write down 25 reasons to give God thanks today. YM prayer focus: Homedale (Homedale, ID) and their leaders.

27

21

Saturday, June 22 Preparing for tomorrow’s Sabbath day of worship

Read 1 Timothy 2:1-4. This passage of Scripture gives us a reference and framework for prayer within a Worship Service. Notice that Paul says, “First of all”; prayer should be the first thing we do, not only in Church but in our lives as well. For whom is Paul asking that prayers for salvation be made? Have you ever felt that certain people were too far gone for salvation? What would Paul say? Oftentimes our focus on coming to Church on Sunday mornings is to receive from the Lord and others. Tomorrow morning is there a practical way you can put others before yourself? Is there some way in which you might be called to intentionally give as well as receive? Let’s cultivate an atmosphere of praying for the lost on Sunday morning. May our prayers of evangelism be a symphony of praise rising up to the Lord of Heaven. Let’s pray for one another! Identify and write down a prayer request that you want your church family to pray over and share it through appropriate channels. YM prayer focus: Whitney (Boise, ID) and their leaders.

28

22

Sunday, June 23 WEEK 4: Practicing prayer evangelism

The focus this week is on Prayer Evangelism. Do you pray for those to whom you will witness before you talk to them about Jesus Christ? You are invited to try an exercise this week that will help you to pray for those who don’t yet know the joy of having Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Each day write down the name of one person that you know that hasn’t accepted Christ into their life. You will end up with seven names by the end of the week. After you write their name down pray for them out loud. There is something powerful about praying out loud. Please don’t omit this step! Pray for them specifically by name. Pray that a door would be opened for you to share the Gospel (Good News!) with them. As you progress through the week with more names, don’t forget to continue to pray for those you wrote down earlier. YM prayer focus: Woodland (Kamiah, ID) and their leaders.

29

23

Monday, June 24 WEEK 4: Practicing prayer evangelism

Read Romans 10:1-13 What hope does Paul have for the Israelites in the first verse of Chapter 10? On the basis of 10:1-2, how would you respond to someone who said, “What you believe doesn’t matter as long as you are sincere?” How can zeal for God sometimes get in the way of knowing him? What is the only way to be saved according to Paul in 10:9-10? Write down a prayer request that you want your small group to pray over and share it with them. YM prayer focus: Iglesia Amigos en McMinnville (McMinnville, OR) and their leaders.

30

24

Tuesday, June 25 WEEK 4: Practicing prayer evangelism

Read Colossians 4:2-6 In advancing the Gospel, what role is played by prayer? Would you consider yourself devoted to prayer? What would need to change in your life so that this can be a reality? Many times in life we can put our “blinders” on and forget to be watchful. The speed and busyness of life can hinder us. Take a moment to step back and ask God who you might need to be watchful for today. From verses 5-6, what principles do you want to build into your life as you relate to non-believers? Consult your church’s avenue of sharing prayer requests. Take time to lift up the needs of your church family. YM prayer focus: Iglesia Amigos en Newberg (Newberg, OR) and their leaders.

31

25

Wednesday, June 26 WEEK 4: Practicing prayer evangelism

Read Ephesians 6:19-20 Prayer prepares the heart of the witness. How is it with your soul today? Does sharing your faith with others invigorate you or are you fearful when this happens? Take a moment to dive a little bit deeper and think about what happens to you when you share your faith. What is the root cause? Ask God to remove that root cause. Remember, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.” P.S. – Don’t forget to keep writing down the names of those who need to know Jesus. Pray for them out loud! If you would ask anything of Jesus today, what would it be? If Jesus would ask anything of you today, what would it be? YM prayer focus: Iglesia Amigos en Reedwood (Portland, OR) and their leaders.

32

26

Thursday, June 27 WEEK 4: Practicing prayer evangelism

Read Luke 10:1-4 Why does Jesus send the disciples out two-by-two? How is the Christian disciple like a “worker in the harvest”? Is there urgency to this passage of Scripture? Why or why not? How can this passage apply to your life today? Spend some time in silence before God. Invite him to speak to you. Write down your reflections and/or questions from this time. Ask someone in your family how you can pray for them today and take some time to do that “on the spot” with them. YM prayer focus: Iglesia Amigos Tierra de Regocijo en Caldwell (Caldwell, ID) and their leaders; NWYM Foundation.

33

27

Friday, June 28 WEEK 4: Practicing prayer evangelism

Read 1 Peter 5:8-11 What does this passage of Scripture have to do with evangelism? What should Christians be “alert” for? We have an enemy who wants to keep those who are blind to the faith right where they are. One of the best ways to combat this spiritual warfare is through prayer. Today, when you encounter someone who does not yet know Christ, look at them from the viewpoint of being held captive. Say a prayer of freedom for them. Is there someone in our church family whom haven’t seen for a while in worship? Is there a newcomer on your heart who may appreciate the gesture of welcome? YM prayer focus: George Fox University, their students and leaders.

34

28

Saturday, June 29 Preparing for tomorrow’s Sabbath day of worship

Are you ready for a Sabbath experience of rest and worship tomorrow? What can you do to be better prepared and focused? Are you aware of how God has been speaking to you or teaching you this week? If God were to call upon you to speak during tomorrow’s open worship would you be prepared and willing? Take time today to read Isaiah 58:13-14. What can you do “honor” the Sabbath tomorrow? This next week is “Creative Prayer Week!” The challenge for the week will be to find a friend and partner together in trying out a new way to pray for one another each day this week. Take some time today to pray about who you might approach as a potential prayer partner for the coming week. You are encouraged to begin praying with them as soon as tomorrow. Let’s pray for one another! Identify and write down a prayer request that you want your church family to pray over and share it through the appropriate channel. YM prayer focus: Klamath Falls (Klamath Falls, OR) and their leaders; Friends Women.

35

29

Sunday, June 30 WEEK 5: Practicing prayer partnership

Is your prayer life in a rut? If so, this week is for you! Welcome to “Creative Prayer Week!” The challenge for this week is to find a friend and partner together in trying out a new way to pray for one another each day this week. Prayerfully approach one other person today and discuss with them how you might pray for one another every day this week. The following is a small list of some ideas for you and your prayer partner to practice. Not all of these ideas involve actually meeting together in person. Whether or not you choose to actually meet (and how often) is up to you: Daily prayer walk: Walk together around your neighborhood/ work places/school or church while praying. Daily “txt pryr”: Send one another a daily prayer via text message. Daily prayer call: Set up a daily phone appointment for prayer with one another. Daily candle light prayer meeting: Lighting a candle can be a powerful symbol of Jesus’ presence as you gather to pray. Daily fasting with prayer: Discuss what you might forego each day to focus your prayer for each other (TV, newspaper, coffee, internet, sweets, etc). YM prayer focus: Living Waters Ministries (Plummer, ID) and their leaders; Friendsview Retirement Community.

36

30

Monday, July 1 WEEK 5: Practicing prayer partnership

Read Acts 2:42-47 This passage offers a summary statement of the activities of the early church. Can you list five things they were committed to? Are you also committed to these things? The picture here is one of mutual support and close relationship with one another. Is your experience of being “devoted to prayer” a lonely one or do you regularly pray with other people? Reflect on a time when someone else blessed you with their prayer. If possible, let that other person/group know how much you appreciate this gift. Give God thanks. Spend some time in silence before God. Invite him to speak to you. Write down your reflections and/or questions from this time. Pray with your prayer partner today. Write down a prayer request that you want your small group to pray over and share it with them.

YM prayer focus: Lynwood (Portland, OR) and their leaders; Friends Men.

37

31

Tuesday, July 2 WEEK 5: Practicing prayer partnership

Read James 5:13-20 Under what circumstances does James recommend we turn to God? This week’s challenge of finding a prayer partner will be scary for most and very difficult for some. In general, are you willing to allow someone else the blessing of praying for and with you? If you are a member of a small group, Bible Study, YIPPS, or other praying group that meets regularly, then you are already well practiced and following through on this challenge. Praise God! If, on the other hand, you are new to this challenge, then we also say Praise God – let’s give this a go! Write down the names of at least three people of whom you can easily say, “I know he/she would be ready and willing to pray for me.” Ask God to break down the barriers of fear or pride that keep you from this blessing. After this prayer partner week challenge is over, are you willing to commit to regular prayer partnership? Pray with your prayer partner today. Consult your church’s avenue of sharing prayer requests. Take time to lift up the needs of your church family. YM prayer focus: Marion (Turner, OR) and their leaders; Friends Church Extension Fund.

Wednesday, July 3 WEEK 5: Practicing prayer partnership

Read I John 5:13-15 As you’re praying with your prayer partner this week, are you praying according to God’s will? This passage offers a conditional promise which results in our having ‘what we asked of him.’ According to this passage, why don’t we have what we ask for? What does this passage imply about the importance of our obedience to ask God in prayer? What does it mean to ask God “according to his will?” Pray with your prayer partner today. Spend some time in silence before God. Invite him to speak to you. Write down your reflections and/or questions from this time. If you would ask anything of Jesus today, what would it be? If Jesus would ask anything of you today, what would it be?

Thursday, July 4 WEEK 5: Practicing prayer partnership

Read James 1:2-8 What reason do we have for hope in the midst of trials? While experiencing a trial, what instruction are we given? Yesterday, our passage challenged us to pray “according to God’s will.” James 1:5 gives us clear direction as to what we are to pray for. In other words, it shows us what kind of prayer God will answer. When you’re in a tough spot, are you more likely to pray for relief or for wisdom? As you pray with your prayer partner, and as you pray for your needs, your family and your church, why not take some time to ask for God’s wisdom and guidance for each situation? Pray with your prayer partner today. If you would ask anything of Jesus today, what would it be? If Jesus would ask anything of you today, what would it be?

Friday, July 5 WEEK 5: Practicing prayer partnership

Read John 16:19-24 Prayerfully re-read this passage. What stands out to you from these words? In the context of Jesus offering farewell instructions to his disciples (just before the cross) he tells them to approach the Father with their requests. Today, of course, is Friday. Perhaps every Friday we should remember that he died and remember why he died. He died in order for us to have access to the Father. What a tremendous privilege prayer really is. Jesus instructs us to ask “in my name.” Take some time to list several names for Jesus. How important is it to pray “in Jesus’ name”? Why? Pray with your prayer partner today. If you would ask anything of Jesus today, what would it be? If Jesus would ask anything of you today, what would it be? Ask someone in your family how you can pray for them today and take some time to do that “on the spot” with them.

Saturday, July 6 Preparing for tomorrow’s Sabbath day of worship

Read Romans 12:1-2 When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior we are transformed. There is no way of being the same once we come to the realization that our sins are wiped clean, that we are adopted into the family of God: we are now children of the King. But, sometimes we forget, don’t we? We need times of renewal so that we can be continually transformed. When was the last time that you would say you were transformed? What was it that spurred on that transformation? Pray this prayer for the week: Dear Lord Jesus, help me to be a transformed disciple. May you open my eyes, ears, mind, and heart to Your transforming ways this week. Renew me according to Your will. Amen. Pray with your prayer partner today. Let’s pray for one another! Identify and write down a prayer request that you want your church family to pray over and share it through the appropriate channel. YM prayer focus: Meridian (Meridian, ID) and their leaders; Faith and Practice Revision Committee.

Sunday, July 7 WEEK 6: Practicing the presence of God

When we live out of the realization that God is all around us all the time, we will live differently than those who do not recognize this. God wants you to recognize him in everything, in every person that you come into contact with, and even in the mundane. This week’s challenge will help you practice the presence of God. Let’s call it “Unexpected Prayers”. Author and journalist Philip Yancey gives us a good idea of what these prayers might look like. “The job of a journalist is, simply, to see. We are professional eyes. As a Christian journalist, I have learned to look for traces of God. God is already present in the most unexpected places. We just need to make him visible.” As you begin each morning this week ask God to show up in an unexpected place in your day, and to help you see him there. In this journal, or a separate paper keep track of these “God Sightings”. My guess is that once you start looking for God he is going to show up in a lot of unexpected places. Earth’s crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God; But only he who sees, takes off his shoes – The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries. –Elizabeth Barrett Browning YM prayer focus: Metolius (Metolius, OR) and their leaders; Board of Youth and Young Adult Ministry; Young Adult Friends Leadership Development Team.

Monday, July 8 WEEK 6: Practicing the presence of God

Read Psalm 46 Have you ever felt like the mountains of your life are falling into the sea? What does this promise of God (refuge, strength, and ever-present help) mean to you during those times of struggle? Do you feel like you need God’s ever-present help right now in life? Take some time today to “be still and know.” Thank God that he is on his throne, and that his Kingdom is not in trouble. Thank him that you are a part of his Kingdom, therefore you are taken care of. Write down a prayer request that you want your small group to pray over and share it with them. YM prayer focus: Netarts (Tillamook, OR) and their leaders; Board of Local Outreach.

Tuesday, July 9 WEEK 6: Practicing the presence of God

Read Psalm 139:1-18 How does David feel about God’s total knowledge of him? Is he restricted or protected? Free or oppressed? Why does he bother to pray? What do verses 11-12 say about God’s ability to transform the most hopeless situations? How does this Psalm make you feel about yourself and your value to God? Is there a “dark” situation in your life, and how can it be brought into God’s light? Consult your church’s avenue of sharing prayer requests. Take time to lift up the needs of your church family.

Wednesday, July 10 WEEK 6: Practicing the presence of God

Read the following prayer by Saint Patrick: Christ, as a light illumine and guide me. Christ, as a shield overshadow me. Christ under me; Christ over me; Christ beside me on my left and my right. This day be within and without me, Lowly and meek, yet all powerful. Be in the heart of each to whom I speak; In the mouth of each who speaks unto me. This day be within and without me, Lowly and meek, yet all powerful. Christ as a light; Christ as a shield; Christ beside me on my left and my right. What does this stir in your soul regarding the ever-present Christ? Have you experienced Christ as a light, a shield, or a guide in your life? Spend some time in silence before God. Invite him to speak to you. Write down your reflections and/or questions from this time. If you would ask anything of Jesus today, what would it be? If Jesus would ask anything of you today, what would it be? YM prayer focus: Newberg (Newberg, OR) and their leaders; Board of Global Outreach.

Thursday, July 11 WEEK 6: Practicing the presence of God

Read John 1:1-5 Why do you think this Gospel begins with, “In the beginning,” rather than at Jesus’ birth? What does the phrase, “Without him nothing was made that has been made,” mean to you? What does this passage bring to light about the presence of Christ? Lord God, our hands are open to You. Our ears are listening to You. Our eyes are watching You. Our hearts are trying to beat with Yours. Live in us and love others through us today. Amen. Spend some time in silence before God. Invite him to speak to you. Write down your reflections and/or questions from this time. If you would ask anything of Jesus today, what would it be? If Jesus would ask anything of you today, what would it be? YM prayer focus: North Seattle (Seattle, WA) and their leaders; Board of Communication.

Friday, July 12 WEEK 6: Practicing the presence of God

Read Psalm 34:17-20 Did you know that God’s presence is with you when you suffer and when you are brokenhearted? Have you had a time in your life when you have felt this? Hear these words of Church father Augustine of Hippo: “In affliction, then, we do not know what to pray for. Because affliction is difficult, troublesome, and against the grain for us, weak as we are, we do what every human would do. We pray that it may be taken away from us. However, if he does not take it away, we must not imagine that he has forgotten us. In this way, power shines forth more perfectly in weakness.” Write your thoughts about this challenge: “Unexpected Prayers” (apprehensions, prayers, reflections, etc.). Be prepared to share your thoughts with your small group. Ask someone in your family how you can pray for them today and take some time to do that “on the spot” with them. YM prayer focus: North Valley (Newberg, OR) and their leaders; Board of Congregational Care.

Saturday, July 13 Preparing for tomorrow’s Sabbath day of worship

Read Ephesians 5:19-20 This passage gives instructions for how to worship together as a church family. From this passage, what are we to do during a gathering for worship? During open worship periods, are you available and willing to speak as the Spirit Prompts? Do you come to services ready to give to God and to give to others out of your leadings and experience with Christ during the week? Offer a prayer for God’s perfect leadership over your church as you gather for worship. Pray for those planning and leading, singing and playing instruments, and pray for each person who attends. All are called to be active participants. Give thanks to God in prayer today for a time you were on the receiving end of someone encouraging you on a Sunday morning. Who needs your prayer and encouragement today? Let’s pray for one another! Identify and write down a prayer request that you want your church family to pray over and share it through the appropriate channel. YM prayer focus: Olympic View (Tacoma, WA) and their leaders; Board of Christian Education and Discipleship.

Sunday, July 14 WEEK 7: Practicing listening prayer

Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). You are encouraged to make time today for an extended period of still and silent prayer. How long? As a suggestion, spend as many minutes in prayer as you are in years. If you’re 18 years old, spend at least 18 minutes in prayer; if you’re 70, you get to spend 70 minutes with the Lord! Listening Prayer departs from traditional prayer by listening from the heart and letting God speak rather than dictating our own requests to God from our own thoughts. Listening Prayer has no need to plead or convince God to answer because it starts by seeking agreement with heaven before speaking. In Traditional prayer we bring our needs and requests to God in hope that God will answer. In silent prayer, however, one humbly steps back and allows God’s will be done by taking time to listen and basing prayer content on what is heard or seen. This prayer is very sacrificial, it can even feel like wasting time, it can feel like it does not “achieve” anything, and you don’t get anything out of it. There is neither a “good” prayer period nor a “bad” prayer period. Whether there are few or many distractions is irrelevant. This is prayer stripped to its naked essentials: faith and intention. Prayer at its simplest. YM prayer focus: Listen for how God wants you to use your talents in NWYM.

Monday, July 15 WEEK 7: Practicing listening prayer

Read Exodus 14:13-14 Think about a situation that brings you anxiety. What can you do about your problem? What can God do about it? Have you given it over to him? How? Do you believe “the Lord will fight for you”? Is it difficult to “only be still”? Why? Spend a few moments in silence and invite God to speak. Record your reflections from this experience. Write down a prayer request that you want your small group to pray over and share it with them. YM prayer focus: Peninsula (Port Angeles, WA) and their leaders; Administrative Council; Board of Elders.

45

Tuesday, July 16 WEEK 7: Practicing listening prayer

Read Psalm 46 Write down any promises you find in this passage. What distractions keep you from tuning in to God’s voice? What can you do today to be more intentional to pay attention to God’s voice…to “know that I am God”? Spend a few moments in silence and invite God to speak. Record your reflections from this experience. Consult your church’s avenue of sharing prayer requests. Take time to lift up the needs of your church family. YM prayer focus: Reedwood (Portland, OR) and their leaders; Business sessions during YM week.

46

Wednesday, July 17 WEEK 7: Practicing listening prayer

Read Habakkuk 2:1-3 How do you feel about being told to wait? When you wait, do you find it hard to be silent? (i.e., in the long checkout line, etc.) When you wait on God, is your attitude the same as Habakkuk’s when he wrote, “I will look to see what he will say to me”? Or—is your prayer a one-sided conversation? What do you sense God would want to say to you right now? Spend some time in silence before God. Invite him to speak to you. Write down your reflections and/or questions from this time. If you would ask anything of Jesus today, what would it be? If Jesus would ask anything of you today, what would it be? YM prayer focus: River of Life (Post Falls, ID) and their leaders; Junior High and High School Youth Yearly Meeting and their leaders; YM workshop leaders.

47

Thursday, July 18 WEEK 7: Practicing listening prayer

Read Psalm 105:1-4 Make a list of 100 things you are thankful for (you will be surprised how easy this is). Remember that God sees you as you write and so may this be more than an exercise, but a prayer that blesses the Giver of all good things. At the dinner table tonight, tell someone why you are thankful today. Spend some time in silence before God. Invite him to speak to you. Write down your reflections and/or questions from this time. If you would ask anything of Jesus today, what would it be? If Jesus would ask anything of you today, what would it be? YM prayer focus: RiversWay Community (Tigard, OR) and their leaders; The sick and suffering in our churches, our communities, our world; Tom Stave, NWYM Presiding Clerk.

48

Friday, July 19 WEEK 7: Practicing listening prayer

Read Psalm 37:7-11 What is commanded for us to do here? What is commanded for us to avoid doing here? Why is it easier to fret than to trust? What difference does it make that you know God is with you? “Meekness” is strength under control. Are you strong or weak when God asks you to be still? Spend a few minutes inviting God to speak to you and to your situation today. Write down any way in which you sense him speaking. Ask someone in your family how you can pray for them today and take some time to do that “on the spot” with them. YM prayer focus: Rose Valley (Kelso, WA) and their leaders; Safety for those travelling to YM today and tomorrow; That our hearts will be united with Christ’s as we meet together.

49

Saturday, July 20 Preparing for tomorrow’s Sabbath day of worship

Read Psalm 46 Make an extra effort to prepare your heart for tomorrow’s ‘open worship.’ Persons there may sense God’s direction to speak, sing, pray, sit in silent waiting before the presence of the Lord, or minister to others in the love of Jesus. Suggestions during the silent time: • Surrender all outside concerns and focus your thoughts on the Lord. • Ask the Lord for guidance and peace. • If the burden of sin is heavy for you, confess your sin (silently to God) and accept his forgiveness and power to change. • Listen for God’s voice within your heart. • Concentrate on a scripture or a song that has meaning for you. If you feel compelled to share a brief message: • Allow opportunity between each message so people have time to pray or reflect upon what was shared. • Consider whether your words are appropriate for a group setting. • Consider if your brief message enhances the current theme of the service. • Speak audibly and clearly. • Refrain from using this time for political or personal agendas or for announcements. YM prayer focus: Rosedale (Salem, OR) and their leaders; Safety for those travelling to Newberg today and tomorrow.

Sunday, July 21 Yearly Meeting Sunday

Read Colossians 4:2 (and 4:2-6) How would you describe your level of devotion to prayer? Is there any way in which you feel changed as a result of this 50 day prayer experience? What continued questions and thoughts do you have about prayer? What new disciplines did you try? Will you try them again? Take some time to silently listen for the Spirit’s leading. What direction do you sense with regard to your continued prayer life over the next 50 days? YM prayer focus: Becky Ankeny, Superintendent, as she brings the keynote message this evening; Richard Foster, who will be speaking Monday – Wednesday evenings.
