auteng is a Sesotho word meaning “place of gold”. The reason for this name- the province is known for containing 40% of the world’s gold reserves. Even though the province was built on this mining industry, it has evolved into a very sophisticated economy. With mining, the modern economic driving forces include finances and manufacturing. As a result, Gauteng is home to South

Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg. To understand its magnitude, Johannesburg has been compared to other world cities like Los Angeles and Sydney. Johannesburg is a crucible of cultural and economic diversity. Johannesburg is also a place of geological, anthropological and historical interest. Sterkfontein cave, where the more than three million year old Australopithecus Africanus was found, is a few kilometres outside the

city. Not far from Johannesburg is Soweto, A town created by South Africa’s Apartheid government to segregate black people. Some of South Africa’s most famous political activists lived here at some point of their lives. Today Soweto is known for its music and culture. Gauteng is also home to South Africa’s administrative capital, Pretoria. Known as the “rose city” or the “ Jakaranda city”,

Pretoria is more laid back than Johannesburg. The city is known for its theatres, museums and monuments. Amongst many other attractions are the Union Buildings and the Voortrekker monument. The fact that Gauteng is a landlocked province does not detract from its fun factor. The province contains enough attractions to provide you with a long list of entertainment. SAT

The Drakensburg escarpment divides Mpumalanga into the high altitude grassland known as the Highveld on the westerly side and the low altitude easterly side known as the Lowveld/ Bushveld. This province is a dream for anybody interested in geography. Some of the earth’s oldest rocks are found in the Barberton area. older than a billion years. The Sandwala caves are regarded as the oldest caves in the world. The two best known chambers are the Amphitheatre and the Crystal Chamber. The names are almost self-explanatory. If you are into dinosaurs, visit the Sandwala Dinosaur Park with its life size models of prehistorical dinosaurs. Space does not allow singing the praises of the natural beauty of this province. Suffice to say, included in this extraordinary beauty is a big portion of the world renowned Kruger National Park as well as the world’s largest Green Canyon. SAT

Driving to Valley of the Rainbow, I already had a feeling that I was going to be greeted by something very special. Being in the throws of winter I was afraid that the dryness would taint this stunning place in a way. Man, was I in for a surprise!! As one enters the Valley of the Rainbow, it’s like entering a different world. Although still dry with very little leaves on the trees, it is so clear that winter has its own beauty, especially in this part of the world. Being a trout fly fishing hot-spot and so popular with fly fisherman, Valley of the Rainbow is a secret paradise. Surrounded by magnificent trout dams, a year round flowing river, the farm of Witpoort is also home to the World famous Witpoort Water Mill. (a whole history all of it’s own, which I will write about soon soon J ). For those who cannot wait, you can read all about the history of this mill at http://www.hydro4africa.net/za/westminster.html or on Valley of the Rainbow’s website www.rainbowvalley.co.za The accommodation offered is as varied as the terrain. There is The Manor House, The Tented Chalets, Country house and The Wood Cabin Luxury Chalets.

The manor house has 5 massive, classically decorated on suite

rooms, all with views over the stunning gardens, the mill and the trout dams. Added to this is a very large lounge and bar area with a huge open fireplace where fires are lit throughout the winter months. A relaxing place where guests can sit and read or play board games orwatch TV while having a quite drink at the bar. The tented Chalets are all self-catering and all overlook the stunning trout fishing dams. Spacious, simply decorated tents on stilts and wooden decks. All have their own bathroom and shower atthe back of the tents. The Country House consists of 5 massive bedrooms with on-suite bathrooms and has the ambiance of an old ranch house in the Wild West, with a ‘stoep’ all the 100 way round. Also a self-catering place, with a massive fully equipped kitchen and dining room – open plan with large wooden doors going out onto a 95 beautifully manicured garden, which meanders down to the river. Then there are the Wooden Cabin Luxury Chalets. Set in the “forest”, these chalets are the 75 epitome of luxury. Each set within thedense trees and close to the river, they offer a peaceful retreat. All open plan with a separate toilet, the chalets have their own fully equipped modern kitchen, a lovely fire-place with neatly and stylishly upholstered high back chairs around the fireplace. The decks are 25 furnished with wooden furniture that add to the forest feeling of the location. All meals are served in the spacious dining area, where, I can confirm, I had 5 one of the best dinners ever. A five course meal delicately prepared by Chef Joseph. Seriously…one of the best!! Herman has confirmed that Rainbow of 0 the valley is going to be the most awesome venue for photographic and artists retreat. I’m going to be one of the artists with a front row seat! by Shelby Andersen

T

he Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world, graciously lends its name to this country. In return, Namibia is trying its utmost to do justice to such a great name. The country is blessed with beauty, culture and expansive wide open spaces. It boasts the world’s highest sand dunes and Africa’s largest canyon. The place is so unique, even Mad Max paid a visit to it. The seventeen national parks and game reserves are only part of this country’s allure. It also contains fourteen vegetation zones. If game viewing floats your boat, you are definitely in

the right place. Apart from the enchanting natural beauty, Namibia is also known for its cultural diversity. Being a German colony, as well as South African protectorate, Namibia has a rich history. The ancient cultures of the indigenous tribes walk hand in hand with modern day independent Namibia. S what else is there to do you ask? What about some sand skiing, or sky diving. Not enough you say. Try some abseiling or rock climbing. If you are still not tired, take your 4x4 on a little adventure. If you need to wind down, well put the board up, “gone fishing”. SAT

inaka Safari Lodge invites you to experience the vastness of an African wilderness – whether capturing the colours of an African sunset, dazzled by the diamond-dotted night sky above or thrill at the roar of lions while tucked up in bed. We are situated in the heart of Botswana, in the Central Kalahari. This unique landscape constantly changes from the stark wilderness of winter, to lush vegetation in summer. It makes Dinaka an African holiday that will be remembered. Dinaka is a family owned and run Lodge, situated in our own private game reserve. We invite you to come and be part of our family for your stay. We would love to show you our world ACCOMMODATION Dinaka Safari Lodge is able to provide you with real home comforts without losing its authentic bush feel. Overlooking the waterhole there are 7 tented chalets on raised decks under thatch, each nestled under the branches of ‘Purple Pod’ trees; blending in with the natural surroundings. Each tented chalet has a bedroom with a king size bed or 2 single beds, covered with white linen, bedside tables and lamps, a wardrobe with a small safe, easy chairs and an en-suite bathroom, with a vanity, basin and mirror, an open air shower and flush toilet. Two of the seven chalets are suitable for families. The spacious main lodge is furnished with comfort in mind and provides your clients with lounges, a dining and bar area, and a splash pool for those hotter months. The camp is 100% solar operated. Plug points are available in the Lodge for charging batteries. Wi-Fi is also available in the Lodge area. ACTIVITIES To make the most of your Botswana holiday, Dinaka Safari Lodge offers

a range of activities showing off the best the Central Kalahari has to offer, including:• Game drives - Both during the day and night. Watch the vast landscape transform as the sun sets and darkness settles in over the bush revealing new creatures and night-calls. Capture special moments on camera. • Nature walks with Bushmen trackers – Spend a couple of hours with our Bushmen on a guided walk in the bush & learn how they as a people have adapted over hundreds of years to live and survive in the harsh Kalahari environment. • Stargazing - The night sky is a diamond studded wonder. Observe, discuss and identify the stars as we relax around the campfire. Watch for shooting stars and satellites high above. • Birding – over each season we have an incredible variety of birds, from “LBJ”s to herons, hornbills, raptors and the amazing vultures. We are pleased to see that our bird numbers have increased substantially – especially the Lappet faced vultures. Apart from the birdlife mentioned above, Dinaka supports the widest variety of animals in the area, ranging from giraffe, zebra, various species of antelope – eland, kudu, hartebeest, wildebeest, Oryx, impala, springbok, duiker and steenbok - to the smaller mammals like the Honey Badger, Bat-eared foxes and porcupine. Also included are the formidable predators such as the Kalahari lion, cheetah, leopard and brown hyenas. After good rains one can see the Giant Bull Frogs emerge from their underground tombs and fight to breed and grow, before the water dries up & they once again retreat into the earth. Other reptiles & insects proliferate too. The Kalahari’s wide open spaces of rolling dunes vegetated with grass & scrub & intense solitude make it a unique safari holiday destination.

Following the summer rains (November to March) the land transforms from dry, dusty and sparse thirst-lands into green grazing grounds of lush vegetation, with water collecting in the pans. It is during the cooler winter months (May to August), when the land is drier, animals congregate around waterholes, making it easier to spot them! Dinaka Safari Lodge is situated on private land, thus enabling guests to enjoy guided night drives.

nyone privileged enough to visit Victoria Falls is at the location of one of the incredible 7natural wonders of the world, but they are also arriving in ‘’real Africa’’. This is not gated, fenced and cosmetic Africa. You are right in the heart of the famed African bush, and will soon notice that baboons, monkeys, warthogs and not unusually Elephants and Buffalo are also seen around town, much like any other resident.Notwithstanding the Falls – you arealsoin the spiritual home of The 76 | SOUTHERN AFRICA

Zambezi, the most enigmatic river in the whole of Africa. This is a special place, and you can feel it. Once here though, take advantage of opportunities to participate in world class activities that will enrich your enjoyment, and hard wire experiences deep into your memory banks. Most begin their itinerary with a sunset cruise on the Zambezi, and it is as alluring as it sounds, gently rolling past the pristine banks, looking for game arriving for a sip at the water’s edge, watching Hippos break

the surface, birds serenely passing by – and a glorious African sunset. A tour of the falls next morning for most is mandatory and can’t fail to surpass expectations. A stop at the world’s only genuine ‘’Rainforest Café’’, allows you an opportunity to not only send envious facebook posts back home, but also enjoy a free talk by David Livingstone himself. For the best perspective on ‘’MosioaTunya’’ (the Smoke that Thunders) however, take a helicopter flight overthe falls. Only then can you truly appreciate Livingstone’s words ‘’scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight’’ Opportunities to appreciate the abundant local wildlife are plentiful with game drives, lion walks, canoeing safaris and horse trials. Unique however is to enjoy riding atop the worlds largest land mammal on an Elephant Back safari, or an astounding game viewing experience on a daytrip to the Chobe. Adventure Capital of Africahas been a well-earned sobriquet for many a year. Simply put, the Zambezi offers the most adrenaline fuelled and exciting one day

grade 5 white water rafting on the planet. There is also the opportunity of the world’s most spectacular Bungee jump or bridge swing, form the iconic 110 year old Victoria Falls Bridge – into the gaping chasm beneath, with the Victoria Falls behind you, rainbows arcing about you, and the Zambezi rapids broiling below you. Alternatively you may choose to zipline country to country Zambia to Zimbabwe over the gorge. Shearwater is the original owner operator of activities in Victoria Falls, coordinates it’s own vast fleet of transport vehicles and buses, runs 2 of the best restaurants in town (fantastic for organised lunches of dinners), is honoured to have the most experienced and accomplished guides, and has gained the trust and support of agents from around the world for over 4 decades.Over 1m clients can attest to the company’s professionalism, exacting standards and pioneering spirit.
