Family creation requirements need to be pre-planned by users It won’t be wrong to say that family creation is a daunting task as it includes too many complexities which should be dealt by users in an effective manner. Considering the fact that users have to handle too many complications while developing a family in Revit Family Editor, it is always better to plan a family before users indulge into developing it. As changes and modifications are inevitable in any project, users can still minimize them by effectively planning a family for saving substantial amount of time. Things that should be pre-planned by users before developing a family  

In this case the first thing that should be planned by users is the size of the family. They must be clear about the fact that do they want the family to have multiple sizes. For example if users want to develop a lighting fixture, which can be acquired by users in multiple sizes, they can suitably create standard component family. However, if the project requirement is a custom component for a specific purpose that cannot be created in different configurations users are required to develop an in-place family. Most of the time it’s the size variability along with amount of complications involved in the component that governs whether the family should be developed as standard component family or in-place family. Another thing that must be planned beforehand is how do users want the family to be displaying in different views. The 2D and 3D geometry of an object is tremendously determined by the way an object is displayed in a view. Display of an object is also accountable for defining its visibility settings. Hence it’s important for Revit users to understand in which view the object created by them will be displayed. The various views in which an object can display include section view, elevation view and plan view. Users should also be cleared beforehand whether the family requires a host –based template or not. If the family is going to be hosted by another component then users are required to select a host-based template. Users must be aware about the amount of details that they need to model in the family this determines the time needed to accomplish a family. For example if 2D geometry can work in some cases users should not go for developing 3D geometry as it can save time.

So if all the above mentioned things are pre-planned by users they can surely create the family in very less time.
