Why is multi discipline coordination required

Why is multi-discipline coordination required? Multidiscipline coordination can be defined as a process of collaborating on a building project for the intended purpose of sharing quintessential interdisciplinary design information so that effective design can be developed and expensive rework can be eliminated. It is quite important that AEC professionals involved in the design development of different building disciplines work with same assumptions so that mistakes and confusions can be avoided. Absence of clear design information among architects, engineers and MEP engineers leads to design errors. That is why changes made to the elements of different building trades are substantially monitored by design and construction professionals with the support of Copy/Monitor tool during multi-discipline coordination. One of the most important advantages of multi-disciplinary coordination is that design changes can be coordinated between different design development teams. But changes can be monitored and coordinated only if architects, engineers and MEP engineers link each other’s building models to their own host model. For example if an architect wants to monitor the changes on structural elements that have been made by structural engineer over a period of time, then he has to link structural model to his own architectural model. Once the structural model is linked by an architect in his architectural model he can view the entire structural model. Every structural element can be effectively monitored by architect and he can compare the location of architectural elements to structural elements for understanding design conflicts and congestions. In this way conflict between elements of a linked model and the host model can be successfully analyzed by an architect. He can either make timely modification to his model or else he can suggest structural engineer to make changes to the design of structural elements for avoiding overlapping of elements. In this way be it the architect, structural engineer or MEP engineers, all of them get the clarity about the design of other building disciplines by linking the models within their own models. During multi-discipline coordination elements in the current project can also be monitored for understanding design congestions or invalid intersections.

Information must be shared among the team members of different discipline so that design can be improved.
