HELLO? CAN EVERYBODY HEAR ME OK? *CLIC K*

IN T R O D U C T IO N

As we reflect on the past four years it’s safe to say they really did “zoom” by, literally. Through technical difficulties, humorous backgrounds, and muted mics, we always knew how to make it count and certainly won’t forget our final semester. May this book serve as a reminder that even though we are separated in distance, we figured it out together. We celebrated together. We made it together. We might be more than 18 degrees apart for now, but we’ll always be 18 degrees together.

CARLY BENNETT B E V ERLY S H O R ES, IN DI A N A

Originating from a very, very, very, very, very small town nestled inside a national park 30 miles outside Chicago. I’d tell you the name but I promise you’ve never heard of it, so when you ask I’ll just say Chicago instead. Growing up I always had a crayon and paper which eventually turned into pencils and a sketchbook, which eventually lead me to spend two years at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago to study painting, which eventually lead to my transfer to Ringling (Thanks Mom and Dad) to study graphic design, which eventually lead to Here. Today. The Ringling Graduating Class of 2020.

Overall, I’ve spent more time in my car than I actually did in class. Seriously, who else in their right mind would drive an hour every day, almost 30,000 miles over the past 4 years in order to get their degree? Well, this was me! Growing up school was always a struggle for me but I never lost that passion for art, to create something beautiful. But making art as my career? I didn’t know that was possible. The phrase “We are a family at Ringling” is exactly what all 18 of us are. Over the past 4 years, we have been there for each other. We’ve complained during class critiques, presentations, but we’ve had some great times as well. But let’s be honest, it was mostly complaining. I’m so proud of how all of us have grown in 4 years, now let’s go into the real world and make some cool shit!

Growing up I never really knew that I could turn art into a career. All I knew was I loved to draw and that’s all I wanted to do. Thankfully, I have always had the support to pursue creativity but would hear the rumor of the “Starving Artist” which was off-putting for me. After learning about Ringling, a wave of opportunity crashed over me as I read through what Ringling had to offer and couldn’t wait for that first semester to start. Although it was rough in the beginning transitioning from painting and sketching to learning how to create digitally, I fell in love with the possibilities of graphic design. A phrase that has always stuck to me is “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”, and thanks to Ringling I’m never going to have to work again.

Who am I, you ask? Maybe you didn’t…but I’ll tell you anyway. I am a designer. An artist. A thinker. A color theory enthusiast. Simply put, I do what I do because the world shows me beauty and purpose. And therefore I give beauty, thought, and purpose back. I set my standards not by perfection, or my process, or others expectations, but by staying true to the intent of what design should be: communication or as I like to refer to it as, “a really dope way of expressing stuff” with the promise to never stop learning, absorbing, and of course, creating cool shit.

I find myself falling down rabbit holes; whether it be new hobbies or new intrigues. Graphic design has become a means to express my varied interests. Aquariums, conspiracy theories, or different construction techniques such as 3D printing or letterpress; they all all bleed into my designs. The versatility, applications, and endless processes never seem to end. That’s why I’ve fallen in love with design. I am glad I’ve attended Ringling, and am excited to pursue my career in the professional world.

I once heard Michael Beirut say, “This thing I had been doing had a name, and it was called graphic design”. Almost everything I’ve created up to this point has been design; shamelessly so. Whether it has been good or bad, that is up to you to decide. However, I cannot envision another profession other than this one, and I hope it remains my passion. A smart man used to tell me as a child, “I may not be the fastest, nor the smartest, but I will always work my hardest”. This will always be my goal with every design I make until each creative avenue is exhausted and something good emerges as the dust settles.

Growing up in Southern Africa meant that my upbringing sculpted me to be a more aware, open minded and most importantly an adaptable person. This definitely came in handy when I moved to America almost three and a half years ago today. The move came with many challenges along the way, like culture shock and self doubt, but I have had the honour of watching myself grow into a strong, independent and determined designer. With this new outlook on life, having transitioned from a very different way of life, I have come to appreciate the abundance of opportunity that is ahead of me. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity and I cannot wait to see myself grow even more as I start my professional journey.

Kristin Griffith currently lives in Saint Petersburg, Florida, but tends to get restless staying in one place too long. She shares her apartment with her husband, two cats, and bearded dragon. Their combined hobbies, including design, programming, cooking, music playing, 3D printing, rollerblading, stargazing, and many other assorted crafts cause new guests to state when they walk into our apartment for the first time, “Wow, you guys have a lot of neat stuff. As cool as our place is, the only bathroom is attached to the bedroom and it makes having overnight guests kind of awkward. She survived Ringling with copious amounts of caffeine.

During the early stages of my high school career I took a digital design class, and that’s where I first encountered my passion for creating. I started out experimenting by creating logos, album covers, posters and everything else that a basic design class entails. This is when I realized how powerful applying good design to something can be. During these first stages of learning how to create good work I promised myself one thing, That I would never stop trying new things, and learning new techniques. To this day I still try to stick to the same rule, that the next thing I create will be different from the last. I believe this will keep my creative energy flowing, and my work fresh and inspired.

When not busy overthinking his life drama, Aiham can also be a multidisciplinary graphic designer creating holistic brand expressions backed by strategy and design thinking. Now, I am graduating from Ringling and I can’t wait to see what the future holds… although, if graphic design doesn’t work out I still have my buns!

Being from a small town in Vermont has opened my eyes to what the world has to offer. It allowed me to discover my passion for travel and design. Growing up, I had always loved to draw, starting from when I was in preschool having taught my whole class how to draw a star. I discovered a love for design; a practical way I could apply my skills. Transferring to Ringling was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I felt at home and welcome the moment I stepped onto campus and into the classroom. I’ll never forget being greeted that first day with Holly, Kelly, Lauryn, and Aiham’s bright smiles, and Jeff Rozanski’s sass. I am so thankful and blessed for all of the memories and experiences I have made at Ringling in just two years.

ROB ROGERSMANATT S H ELB U R N E FA LLS, M A S S A C H U SE T T S

It is 9am on a brisk Sunday morning. You shuffle into the kitchen where you prepare a pot of coffee and some delicious sourdough toast. It is a quiet morning but something is not as solemn about this particular morning. You walk outside onto your rustic porch where the smell of grass and conifers meet your nose. It is a chilly 55° degrees with wind out of the north as you hunker yourself into your favorite chair with your favorite book. As you gaze out at the mountains covered by pines, the sound of a bird’s call flutters to your ear… But something’s not right about this particular morning. You take a sip of your delicious colombian-blend while looking to the fog that hangs upon your mountainous backdrop. You feel the wood of the chair with the warmth of the cup as you rock in your chair and then you remember… You did not upload the correct project version to your client.

I was raised in the Sarasota area for most of my life, and attending Ringling has been a dream of mine ever since I was a kid. I met the most wonderful people while attending Ringling and I couldn’t have asked for a better four years.

Sometimes I sneeze so much that Jeff asks me to leave. Oh! Remember that one time we were seniors and we had this really great idea but we never made anything? That was a damn shame.

Dear Joani,

We are incredibly fortunate to have gotten to know you as both an instructor and a close friend over the past few years. From constructing prototype boxes to creating grid systems, we salute your patience and enthusiasm in guiding us through our educational journey. Our time together will always be remembered with immense joy and laughter. You taught us to be proud of our work and to appreciate the beauty in the details. Those are lessons that we will always remember throughout our careers. We are incredibly sorry that our time together was cut short. We trust that your next chapter in life will be filled with inspiration and creativity. We hope that you keep us updated on your latest creations as we do the same in return.

Sincerely, Class of 2020 P.S: PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO FEED YOUR PET LLAMA.
