Identifying the Best Blade for the job When choosing a diamond product you must first decide how often the product is to be used and the longevity of life expected. If you are a large civil engineer for instance, you will undoubtedly need a product that is to be used on a regular daily basis and that will give long life and a fast cutting speed. On the other hand, if you are a general builder who only occasionally uses a diamond blade you will need to use a product that will adequately do the job, but not necessarily with the same level of performance. A specialist quality product will actually be less expensive per cut/metre in the long run than say a Trade blade. Since the Specialist product may cut 10 times more than the Trade blade but cost only three times as much. Large companies will consider the price per cut or per metre more important than the initial unit purchase price of the product.
8
An operator must choose which particular product is best suited to the application in question. The application chart shown on page 15 of this brochure should help eliminate the use of the wrong tool for the job and the fault diagnosis on page 74 will help if you need to identify any problems that may have occurred whilst in use. In addition to this, the following pages are packed full of user information. It is a fact that 99.9% of problems are caused by operator error and not product failure. JCB tries to eliminate user error by correctly identifying all the characteristics and applications of the products to help in the selection process and also describes how best to use each product selected, as well as offering on site training and consultancy.
How to order from the brochure You have determined from the application chart that you want a professional JCB10 product. Find the Specialist concrete range in the brochure and check underneath the sizes in the application section and check if the application or product operation description is the same as the intended use. Decide the tool you will be using and the diameter and bore size of the blade. For instance if you are using the product on a 300mm petrol saw that has a 20mm bore hole you will need to order JCBC1030020 (JCBC10 type 300mm diameter 20mm bore). All product codes are shown in this brochure so be sure to make the last two digits the bore size of your choice. Alternatively just quote the part no eg. 880/07147. Alternatively you can order direct off our website www.edgediamond.com.
Choosing the Correct Diamond Blade 1. Price When choosing a blade what is the most important factor? The cost per cut or the price of the blade? A low priced blade of Trade quality may be preferred if the job is small or the use is occasional. A higher priced blade will be less expensive for larger jobs or more regular use because it will be delivering a lower cost per cut. Recommended are Professional quality or Contract quality. For much bigger jobs the lowest cutting cost per inch/foot is much more important than the initial cost. We recommend choosing Specialist quality. JCB Diamond has a grading system to help identify the varying performances of the blades. 2. Type and horsepower of the saw What kind of saw, grinder, what horsepower is being used? What is the RPM? Floor grinder, right angle grinder, small power hand saw, high speed saw, concrete saw and masonry saw? For the best results from blade and saw, blades should be matched with the saw and horsepower. Manufacturers of Diamond blades design products to be run at specific speeds. Blades used on high speed cut-off saws have to be rated at higher RPMs. All JCB Diamond high speed handheld saw blades are rated at the appropriate, higher RPMs.
3. Material to be cut A very important factor in choosing blades is correctly identifying the material to be cut. This directly affects the life of the blade and the cutting speed. Nearly all materials fall into the following catagories: soft, medium soft, medium hard, and hard. An example of this would be in masonry, hard would be granite or quarry tile. In concrete it would be cured concrete with a hard aggregate. Soft would cover light weight block or asphalt. Choose a softer bond when cutting hard materials. The softer bond will release the diamond chips at the point of maximum utilisation, without danger of holding the diamond long enough to be overexposed to heat at the cutting point. If the overexposed diamond is not sloughed off, it will in time stop cutting and glaze over. The glazed-over surface will stop the entire sloughing off process and the blade will stop cutting, due to there being no new diamond chips being exposed at the cutting edge. This would render the diamond blade useless. Select a harder bond that will hold the diamond chips longer so as to be more productive when cutting soft materials. If you use a soft concrete with a soft bond, the bonding matrix will prematurely release the diamond chips before they have reached maximum utilisation therefore the good diamond chips will be lost very early on. The blade will still cut adequately but productivity will be poor.
Consideration must be given to the amount and size of steel reinforcing as blades have low efficiency in cutting steel bar. The majority of diamond blades cut a range of materials for maximum performance in both cutting and life. The material should be matched to the blade as closely as possible. A general rule would be to determine the material which will be cut most often, or the material for which blade performance is most important. 4. Wet or dry cutting Choosing wet or dry cutting may be a matter of user preference or job requirement. If you use a power hand saw, due to the electricity it is not safe to use with water. For concrete saws, wet cutting is usually preferred as the water acts as a coolant and you can cut deeper. Both wet or dry cutting can be used for tile and masonry saws. Dry blades are more popular for high speed hand held saws, but they are often used on wet to control the dust. Water must be used with wet blades. Dry blades can be used in either condition.
5. Importance of segment height Segment heights may be misleading due to non-diamond bearing segment bases that are necessary for the laser welding or brazing processes. The higher segment lasts longer. When wanting to save the total cost for larger jobs you would choose a longer segment height. You can choose proper segment height according to the job size. 6. Variables affect performance There are factors that affect the blades performance and value. Consider the diamond size, concentration and quality, the hardness of the bond, the cutting power of the saw, and how well the blade specification is matched to the material being cut.

JCB Diamond - The Facts
The Diamond The most important factor associated with the diamond product industry is the diamond. Diamond technology has been in existence since the 1950’s. Key performance criteria in diamond products is the quality, shape, size, concentration, crystal purity, strength and thermal stability of the diamonds. There are two types of diamond in existence, naturally mined and synthetic industrial diamonds. Synthetic industrial diamonds are generally stronger and their characteristics are more consistent than natural diamonds making them more suited to sawing, cutting and grinding although for certain applications we do use naturally mined diamonds with specific 10
morphology. During cutting the diamonds are exposed to tremendous stresses. Diamond crystals with blocky shapes and smooth faces (cubo-octahedon) with good cutting edges that have a low breakdown rate or wear rate are required to ensure proper cutting speed and life. This morphology gives the crystal additional strength and allows it to cope with the colossal stresses during its working life. Working applications range from the hardest granites, refractories and heavily reinforced concrete to soft marbles, limestones and other general building materials. This broad spectrum facilitates the use of a large variety of diamond grits. Diamond grit is graded in a controlled process for its different characteristics. During the cutting action the diamond needs to perform in a sharp free-cutting way. If a wrong type of grit or grade of diamond has been chosen then the product will not perform to its full potential. Diamond grit needs to crack and break off from the cutting edge in a controlled manner after it has become blunt, to allow a new piece of sharp diamond grit to begin cutting. If this does not happen, the blade will become blunt. If this process happens too soon then the blade will wear too quickly. On severe applications we can also coat the diamond with special compounds such as tungsten nitride to help it adhere to the bond.
The Matrix or Bond To be able to hold the diamond in place is the fundamental factor that contributes to the performance of the product. The bond is a result of creating a strong holding matrix designed with a varying degree of hardness and abrasion resistance. Various metals with different hardness and characteristics are used, such as, Copper, Cobalt, Aluminium, Tungsten, Iron, Manganese, Bronze and many other rare earth metals. Varying micron sizes and grades of these rare earth metals in a powder form are bonded together with the diamond to form the segment, depending on the application, (this is called Powder Technology). The varying strength of the bond depends upon the chosen application, holds each diamond in place within the cutting segment, and this provides the cutting or grinding section of the product. As the cutting commences, calculated erosion of the bond takes place exposing the diamond. This is critical to the overall performance of the cutting or grinding action. As the bond wears in a controlled manner, the support for each diamond crystal is removed and the worn or blunt diamond breaks out, which in turn exposes a new diamond crystal to continue the cutting action. This should happen in conjunction with the original diamond becoming blunt. This wear characteristic of the bond should determine the speed of cut and product life. The abrasive nature of the product
being cut determines the hardness of the bond. For instance a product intended to cut hard engineering brick will have more Bronze in the bond, since the application is not abrasive and the bond will need to be soft enough to wear and expose the diamonds. On the other hand a segment cutting asphalt would have more Tungsten within its bond because it will have to withstand premature wear rates attributable to the abrasive nature of the aggregates and petrological substances within the asphalt. If a blade is used on the wrong application, either the product will wear too quickly or "glaze over" which means there is no diamond exposure, so the product will not cut. (In general terms, hard but less abrasive aggregates and sand require softer bonds. Softer but more abrasive aggregates and sand require harder bonds). See Fault diagnosis at the back of this brochure for a diagram on "Blade not cutting".
The Segments
The Core
Segments are a mixture of different diamond grits and specially formulated metal powders. This mixture is then loaded into a mould and pressed under varying pressures dependent on its intended application. The segment is then heated to a temperature of around 800°c to form the desired product that comes in a variety of sizes and shapes dependent upon their purpose and application. The segment is made wider than the steel core to which it is to be attached. This difference in dimension allows the blade to cut freely without binding the core against the application when it is in the cut. Clearance helps to remove the residue and debris from the cut and thus stops the core blank from wearing prematurely which would result in blade failure.
JCB diamond cores are made from high alloy, heat treated steel. A bore hole is milled out of the centre to the required size. Radial slots or gullets are machined out of the outer diameter to facilitate the attachment of the segments bonding process. These can be machined in a variety of forms, wide gullet, narrow gullet, recessed or many others. The various types of gullet are needed for different cutting applications. They enhance the performance of the product and its cutting characteristics. The different shaped gullets improve water and air flow around the periphery of the blade and help dissipate the heat and slurry and are critical to the cutting process.
The segments are laser welded or brazed onto the core to complete the finished product. The core itself must be balanced and true. This is checked throughout our manufacturing process both before and after segment attachment. It is also checked again after dressing. The term "dressing the segment” refers to grinding away the metal matrix or bond by use of a specially designed grinding wheel. This exposes the primary layer of diamond crystals ready for use. Core bit barrels are made with seamless tubing or from rolled or welded steel. Due to the high RPM’s the core is subjected to, it is critical that the tube is true, straight and round. Out of round tubes will result in core drill failure or premature uneven wear of the barrel.
Deep draft protection segments are attached to blades that may encounter abrasive applications to also help in the removal of the abrasive slurry from the cut. This also eliminates any undercutting of the core. The part of the segment that is to be attached to the core is manufactured without diamonds and this is usually called “freeback”. This transitional area is to be adhered to the core, usually by laser welding. Any impurities or foreign bodies within this weld area would jeopardise the stability of this area and could finally result in segment loss.
11
How Do Diamond Blades and Core Bits Work The cutting segments of the blades, cores or grinding heads are put through a grinding process before they leave the factory to remove a layer of the metal bond so as to expose the diamonds. The tool will be ready for use as soon as it reaches site. Three major factors determine the blade or core bit performance. • The type and size of the diamond crystals • The diamond concentration. • The hardness and characteristics of the metal bond. In general terms, it is true that larger diamond crystals are better suited to softer aggregate types, while smaller diamond crystals will perform better on harder aggregates. Diamond concentration refers to the amount and dispersion of the diamond grit in the segment. Generally, the higher the concentration of diamonds and the closer the grit is spaced, the harder the segment. Highly concentrated diamond segments cut more effectively than lower concentrated segments. However this again depends on the quality, size and shape of the diamond crystals.
12
The bond or matrix is designed to wear away at a rate that is in proportion to the blunting, the breaking off or pulling out of the diamond crystal. These phenomena are designed to occur at exactly the right time, yet are different for each application and every structure and molecular composition. We have developed a unique array of bonding formulas that give unbeatable performance per unit cost over a period of time and will continue to develop different compositions to maintain its position at the forefront of the diamond industry. Generally the rate of wear of a given diamond segment is determined by the erosion of the bond diamond quality (phase 1), diamond wear (phase 2), diamond fracture (phase 3) and diamond pull out (phase 4). A combination that should correspond in unison with the aggregates abrasive properties. Phase 1

Types of sawing
Aggregate size
Types of materials and hardness. The hardness of a mineral is one of the most diagnostic and easy tests to perform in the attempt to identify an unknown mineral. Hardness is a measure of a mineral's resistance to abrasion and reflects the atomic structure of a mineral. A mineral of any given hardness will scratch a mineral of a lower number. With a systematic approach, you can use minerals of known hardness to determine the relative hardness of any other mineral. Aggregate hardness (Moh’s Scale) Hard 7-9 Flint, some quart. 5-7 Some quartz, river gravel, some granites 3-5 Some granites, hard limestones, dolomites. 2-3 Soft limestones. Effect Harder aggregates require softer bonds. Softer aggregates require harder bonds. Harder aggregates make the blade cut slower. Softer aggregates make the blade cut quicker.
The larger the aggregate’s size the slower and harder the blade will cut. Different formulations and mixes of aggregate within the application such as asphalt over concrete will subject the blade to different wear rates and characteristics. On these types of applications a mixed grit and grade is used to make the blade wear at the correct rate that will be conducive to normal blade life.
Concrete cutting It is critical to assess the age of the concrete when trying to ascertain the correct blade type. Stage 1- Approximately 10 hours after the concrete pour, the concrete is considered green. This is the best time to cut a concrete slab to prevent cracking from expansion after it has cured. At this stage the concrete has not cured or set and the sands and granules have not properly set into the binder or cement. When sawing in this type of application the slurry or debris rolls around in the cut above the segment area. This starts to wear the core. By using a deep draft segment we are able to eliminate this abrasive action as it throws out the new slurry that is made with each revolution of the blade. Stage 2 - When the concrete is approximately 24 hours old it is more set or cured. The sand is more tightly held in the mortar making the concrete less abrasive during cutting. A slightly softer bond is required but some abrasion can take place.
Stage 3 - After 24 - 72 hours the concrete is semi-cured. The sand is quite tightly held in the mortar thus reducing the abrasive properties of the concrete. A softer bond than on either stage 1 or 2 is required. Stage 4 - After 72 hours the concrete is considered cured. The abrasive sands are tightly held in the mortar making the concrete less abrasive to cut. When cutting the density and amount of steel should also be taken into consideration as well as the type of aggregate. As with all other cutting operations a certain amount of experience is needed as aggregate size, hardness and the amount of steel in the cut together with the atmospheric conditions and weather will add a variance to the correct usage and cutting properties of the application. (Generally, as with other sawing, drilling and grinding operations, harder aggregates require softer bonds, softer aggregates require harder bonds. More dense materials require softer bonds, less dense materials require harder bonds. More steel in the cut requires softer bonds, less steel requires harder bonds).
Asphalt
Asphalt over concrete
Asphalt does not age or cure in the same way as concrete. After the asphalt has been laid, the sand begins to set in the binder. However the sand is never held firmly so the abrasive properties of asphalt are quite high. When mixed with water, the abrasive slurry acts like a grinding paste and is extremely abrasive. Core protection is essential. Important factors to take into consideration when sawing asphalt are:•The hardness of the aggregate will make the blade cut harder and slower. •Large aggregates will make the blade cut harder and slower. •The more sand the faster the blade will cut. •If the surface of the asphalt is very porous and broken, the more dirt and sand will fill the cracks, making the action more abrasive. When laid, asphalt is sometimes not of the same depth throughout the cutting area. If the blade is used to cut all of the way through into the sub-base, the blade will wear prematurely, as this area usually contains abrasive sands and debris.
Asphalt over concrete creates a special assortment of conditions. The asphalt being very abrasive with small aggregates requires a hard bond that is fairly wear resistant, while the concrete beneath is cured, which requires a softer bond. The deeper the layer of asphalt means a harder bond is needed. The deeper the concrete section is, will mean that a softer bond is needed. On this type of application a mixed grit diamond of differing size and shape is used.

Application - Continuous rim precision cutting blades for hard materials, ceramic tiles, quarry tiles, floor tiles, marble tiles, slate tiles and dense tiles. Very high diamond grit concentration gives long blade life whilst offering a fast smooth cutting action. The water flow cools the blade and helps remove slurry. This blade range is particularly suitable when the application requires a smooth accurate edge. B o r e d i m e n s i o n s m u s t b e s p e c i f i e d w h e n o r d e r i n g . Information & Safety
! 71
Safety General 1 The correct specification blade has been selected for the application. 2 The machine selected for the operation is of the correct specification and has been serviced to a standard that complies to the manufacturer's service recommendations. 3 That the machine complies or exceeds all relevant health and safety regulations. 4 That the area of operation is clean and tidy and complies with any need for barriers, signs, warning notices etc. 5 That the operator has been properly trained and certified for machine operation and health and safety regulations. 6 That in the case of electrically powered machines, the machine is of the correct voltage and that the site supply is adequate both in terms of power supply and compliance to site electricity supply regulations. 7 Always ensure that when fitting a blade the machine is disconnected from the power source and the correct tools are used. 8 That the site is free of pets and children.
Using the Diamond product ensure that: 1 The blade or bit is operating at the manufacturer's recommended speed. 2 The blade or bit is being fed into the work at a suitable rate. 3 In the case of wet cutting an adequate supply of water is available. 4 The blade or bit is in a suitably undamaged condition. 5 The blade is never twisted or forced in the cut. 6 The blade is gradually lowered into the material being cut. 7 The material being cut is not hand or foot restrained. 8 The blade and machine are periodically inspected for wear or damage.
For your personal safety always ensure that you: 1 Wear suitable ear defenders. 2 Wear suitable foot wear. 3 Wear suitable eye protection. 4 Wear suitable protection against dust. 5 Wear suitable clothing. 6 Read the instructions carefully.

Glossary Introduction
Wet cutting
This section should help to identify some of the challenges that are inevitable when using Diamond products. This section presents the possible causes of the problems then proceeds to guide you through any necessary action to identify and eliminate them. It is of paramount importance that all Diamond product specifiers, supervisors and operators are aware of the best practice in the use of products contained within this brochure that will enhance the product's life, along with operational performance and efficiency.
Wet cutting products must be used with water to keep the segments cool during the cutting operation. Water also assists the product to perform at its maximum efficiency. Under no circumstances should you use the product without adequate water flow (see page 76 for recommended flow rate chart for wet cutting). Cutting without water on these products will cause excessive heat build up, resulting in poor performance and blade damage in the form of cracks in the steel centre. The braze transitional area holding the segment onto the centre may melt, resulting in segment loss.
Brazed segments
Dry cutting
Diamond segments are attached to the core by brazing with the use of solder positioned between the segment and the core. This is then heated to approximately 2000째C until the solder melts and makes a bond between the two pieces.
Dry cutting is possible with low horsepower machines for high speed and intermittent use. Although no water is required, blades must be cooled with airflow around the blade to dissipate the heat. Dry cutting blades are only recommended for intermittent cutting. Every 10 - 15 seconds the blade should be allowed to rotate out of the cut at maximum rpm for several seconds to allow the blade to cool. Operators should not use dry Diamond blades for long continuous full depth sawing in one single pass. Any cuts deeper than 4 cm should be step cut - ie make several shallow passes until the required depth of cut is reached. On asphalt, operators should avoid cutting into the sub-base of roads as this will cause rapid wear of the segments. Do not force the blade into the material, remember to let the tool do the work, any undue force will cause vibration and overheating which will adversely affect the life and the performance of the product. Overheating should be avoided particularly when cutting steel reinforced materials such as
High frequency welding By the action of a high frequency electronic current the binder melts and bonds the two parts together.
Laser welded segments Laser welding represents the latest advancements in Diamond blade fabricating technology. Diamond segments are attached to the core by laser beam. The transitional area of laser weld is even stronger than the segment or the core. Laser welded blades can be used wet or dry. The requirements of the application or equipment involved in using Diamond products may at times necessitate the use of water for cooling the product or maximising blade performance, despite the blade being laser welded.
lintels. Forcing the product into the application is the most common cause of overheating. If signs of overheating are present, such as blue discolouration under each segment of the core, then the blade will require redressing. Forced cutting of hard aggregates, or hard low abrasive materials can reduce the cutting ability of the blade. The operator should dress the Diamond blade by using it in a soft abrasive material such as sandstone or abrasive blocks which will then restore the cutting properties.
Blade performance The most common problem encountered by diamond blade users is blade wear. It is also the most difficult to accurately evaluate. It is impossible to predict the life performance of a blade that is operating in conditions with so many variables. To consistently monitor the life and performance of the blade it is essential to calculate the variables including the material, inch metres cut, depth of cut, water supply, water quality and quantity used, and the amount of pressure applied by the operator, rather than the hours, days or weeks that the blade has been used. Trying to compare the performance of a blade with another is almost impossible due to the large amount of variables encountered.

Fault Diagnosis Core Cracks
Out of Round
Tension Loss
Overheating
Segment Loss
Possible Causes • Blade too hard for the material being cut. • Excessive cutting pressure, caused by too high infeed results in the blade core bending and flexing. Metal fatigue will eventually cause core to crack. • Worn shafts, damaged machine bearings, or blade incorrectly mounted.
Possible Causes • Blade shaft bearing may possibly be worn. Fit new bearing and ensure regular lubrication. • Blade too hard for the material being cut, this will result in the blade hammering and wearing out of round. Choose a blade with a softer bond system. • Machine spindle may have groove scored in it as result of previous blade slipping on spindle.
Possible Causes • Blade core overheated. For wet cut blades ensure sufficient water supply. • Check machine is running at correct rpm, that the flanges are of the correct and same size and that there is no wear on the machine bearing. • The blade is deviating in the cut because it is too hard for the application. • Ensure that the blade is not spinning on the spindle and that it is secure. • Ensure that the blade is cutting in straight lines only.
Most common cause of blade failure. Overheating can cause many other problems such as core cracks, loss of tension, and segment loss. Overheating will usually cause black or bluish discolouration on the core. Possible Causes • In wet cutting inadequate water supply due to low water pressure, blocked or damaged water tubes or dust suppression systems being inadequate for wet cut blades. • In dry cutting - excessive cutting pressure results in heat build up. Allow blade to do work, with hand held machines, use gentle reciprocating action and avoid cutting too deep in a single pass.
Possible Causes • Blade has twisted or jammed in the cut because the material was not held firmly. • Machine has been twisted or turned while blade is in the cut. • Blade core has undercut due to cutting below the asphalt into the sub-base. • Blade is too hard for the material being cut, resulting in the blade hammering in the cut. • Blade is deflected in the cut due to the blade flanges being worn or deformed and failing to provide proper support. • Inadequate water supply.

Segment Cracks

Blade Not Cutting
Rapid Wear
The effect of premature wear of the steel core is a particular problem in asphalt, fresh concrete and other highly abrasive materials. Segment loss may result from the steel core wearing to a knife edge just below the segment. Possible Causes • Make sure that the blade specification has offset segments to assist removal of the slurry from the cut. • Make sure that the blade is not cutting below the asphalt into the sub-base. Constant rubbing of the loose material causes premature wear and has no beneficial effect on the cut surface. • Make sure that the water supply is correct as increased water flow will wash slurry from the contact area and reduce undercutting.
• Use a blade with a softer bond system, as the blade specification may be too hard for the material being cut, causing hammering in the cut.
Possible Causes • Blade will hammer if it is incorrectly aligned when mounted. Make sure that the blade is mounted on the correct diameter spindle before tightening. Make sure that the pin holes slide over the drive pin. • The blade will spin or vibrate on the spindle if the flanges are not properly tightened. • The blade will pound if the saw shaft is badly worn or grooved.
Possible Causes • Check that specification is correct for the material. Dull blades can be sharpened by cutting a soft abrasive material. • Machine drive belts need retightening or the machine has insufficient horsepower for the specification being used. • Check direction of rotation.
Possible Causes • Blade specification is causing the diamond to be over-exposed. Use a blade with a harder bond system. • If the blade wears out of round this will increase the wear normally due to bad bearing, worn shaft or the blade specification being too hard for the material. • An inadequate water supply can cause damaged or blocked water tubes. • Softening of the blade specification and low blade speed can be caused by loose drive belts.

If a product will not cut because the blade has "glazed over" then "open" the blade up by running it through abrasive materials. If a blade is wearing prematurely then use a blade with a harder bond.

* Based on 9,500 SFPM (Surface Feet Per Minute) the general optimum performance range for cutting concrete and masonry products is = 10%. For hard, dense materials such as stone and tile, the optimum performance speed is 10-25% less than the speeds shown on ‘Maximum blade cutting depths and operating speeds’ table. Blade shaft speeds (RPMs at no load) for most tools will be higher than recommended operating speeds shown on ‘Maximum blade cutting depths and operating speeds’ table. Under normal sawing conditions, the actual blade shaft speed or the tool will slow down under load, and should fall within the optimum speed range. ** This speed RPM represents the recommended operating speed in revolutions per minute at which each blade can be used. Before using any blade, make sure the blade shaft speed of the tool is within the “maximum safe” limit of that blade. All JCB Diamond products are tested to EN13236 specification and guidelines. The maximum recommended cutting speed of all blades must not exceed 100m/sec. 77
