CASHIERS/ SAPPHIRE VALLEY/GLENVILLE Cashiers is an unincorporated village on the southern end of Jackson County. It is home to some of the highest vistas in the county, including those in neighboring communities Sapphire Valley and Glenville. Sitting at 3,484 elevation, Cashiers/Sapphire Valley and Glenville are known for their eclectic shops and boutiques, world-renowned private golf courses, majestic views (Whiteside Mountain, Whitewater Falls, Fairfield Lake, Lake Glenville), events, restaurants and lodging. CHEROKEE The Qualla Boundry is home to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation. The 18th-century Cherokee lifestyle is preserved via live demonstrations in the village and in the summer, the drama “Unto These Hills” tells the tribal story at an outdoor theatre. The nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park features campgrounds and hiking trails. Cherokee is home to the Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, a world-class venue for gaming, lodging, dining, concerts and much more. CULLOWHEE/FOREST HILLS Cullowhee is the proud home of Western Carolina University and the surrounding businesses and residences designed to service campus needs.

Western Carolina University has been named the premiere outdoor adventure college in the region for several years and enrollment at WCU has steadily grown to over 11,000 students. The Village of Forest Hills is a welcoming, safe, and thriving residential community adjacent to the college. DILLSBORO A village of shops, crafters, family restaurants and diverse events, Dillsboro is proud to host annual festivals including Colorfest, Lights and Luminaries, and an Easter Hat parade, just to name a few. The popular Great Smoky Mountains Railroad makes a stop in Dillsboro throughout the busy spring, summer and fall months. SYLVA/WEBSTER Sylva is the county seat of Jackson and has been named one of the greatest places to retire in the U.S. Residents and visitors enjoy annual festivals and events. Sylva boasts a wide array of restaurants and now has four breweries, three bookstores and an eclectic shopping experience featuring unique clothing, arts, crafts, jewelry, antiques, cocktail lounges and consignment stores. The neighboring town of Webster is a quiet residential community situated on top of a hill overlooking the Tuckaseigee River. It is situated just south of Sylva before entering Cullowhee.

FISHING. BEER. MUSIC. Festival Flows Into Fifth Year

T he Jackson County Chamber of Commerce will present the fifth annual Hook, Line & Drinker Festival on Saturday, May 14, 2022. The festival celebrates Jackson County being the home of the WNC Fly Fishing Trail and N.C. Trout Capital. The event will be held from 3-7 p.m., at the Bridge Park in Sylva, N.C. The festival features fishing guides and outdoor adventure vendors, food trucks, craft beer from the region’s top brewers, rotating sets of music by the Carolina Soul Band (beach/soul/R&B) and

Terri Lynn Queen, Tim Queen and Scott Baker (classic Rock), and children’s activities. In 2020, the festival was named one of the Southeast Region’s Top 20 events for May by the Southeast Tourism Society. Sylva’s own craft brewery Innovation Brewing will be featuring an HLD Pilsner in honor of the festival that is a fundraising craft beer for the chamber to continue producing the event. T he Jackson County Chamber of Commerce will proudly present its July 4 Fireworks Festivities for the eighth year in a row on Monday, July 4, 2022. This year’s special event will feature an exciting concert by one of the region’s finest bands, the “Crocodile Smile Band,” who will perform classic rock hits/pop/R&B/ beach music, followed by an impressive fireworks show when the sun goes down. The concert will be at the

Bridge Park Pavilion in downtown Sylva, where there will be food trucks, children’s activities and more family-friendly celebration. Local residents and visitors can see the fireworks from just about any viewing location in the downtown Sylva area including Main Street, Mill Street and the Jackson County Historic Courthouse steps. Another crowd gathers for Sylva’s annual summertime Concerts on the Creek music series at the Bridge Park.

E ach summer, the Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce team up to produce the Concerts on the Creek series at the Bridge Park gazebo in Sylva. These 15 events occur every Friday from 7-9 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day. Concerts on the Creek are free and open to the public with donations encouraged. Bring a chair or blanket. Jackson County is home to the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail - the nation’s first. The trail maps out 15 prime spots to catch brown, rainbow and brook trout. From wide-open, crystal clear rivers to secluded Great Smoky Mountain streams, the WNC Fly Fishing Trail has you covered. Visit us at www.FlyFishingTrail. com for a map to download, descriptions and GPS coordinates for all 15 spots, plus a photo gallery and weekly fishing report. In 2016, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce led the effort for our home to become the official Trout Capital of N.C. Legislators on both the N.C. House and Senate floors recognized Jackson County as the “Premier Trout Fishing Destination” in the state. Follow the N.C. Trout Capital at www.nctroutcapital.com. Jackson County contains 4,600 miles of trout streams and receives an annual stocking of 92,800 trout, which is the most of any county in the state. It also features the state’s longest contiguous stretch of N.C. Mountain Heritage Trout Waters. Jackson County is the home of the state record for the largest rainbow trout ever caught. Jackson County has 31 public access points for fishing; supports fishing classes for children; is home to the nation’s largest river cleanup day in the country; and plays host to its own trout festival and a chapter of Trout Unlimited. There are now six retail fly shops and more than 25 guides in Jackson County.

Chamber and fishing partners urge leaving no trace behind As you gear up for your outdoor excursions in Jackson County, please be environmentally mindful and help us to keep our mountains ‘Clean and Green’ for generations to come. In 2022, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and its fishing partner entities the WNC Fly Fishing Trail, N.C. Trout Capital, and Hook, Line and Drinker Festival, will be highlighting the "Don't Trash Where We Splash," campaign. This is an effort to keep our beloved rivers, streams, creeks and lakes clean and free from litter. The Great Smokies are home to over 30 species of salamanders, making it the “Salamander Capital of the World.” These little critters have a delicate ecosystem and live primarily under rocks and by riverbanks in moist areas. It’s important never to move or stack rocks, as many of these salamander species, such as the endangered hellbender, lay eggs under them. Observe the Fly Fishing Trail Sportsman’s Pledge – the WNC Fly Fishing Trail® has over 92,000 fish stocked annually bringing anglers from all over to angle the pristine waters of the Tuckaseigee. We ask users of the trail to follow the pledge: “as a true sportsman, I pledge to never litter and to avoid trespassing on private lands. I will respect 40

Make a donation to the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and help us spread the word! the rights of property owners, and always leave the streams in better conditions than I found them.” Taking a float trip down the Tuckaseigee, relaxing on the lake, or even just sitting by the riverbank can all be great ways to enjoy Jackson County. If you are out on the water, make sure to bring a trash bag along with you, and please be respectful of private property along the river. Jackson County locals often volunteer in many annual green efforts, such as Cleaning Up the Mountains and the Tuckasegee River Cleanup. Organizations such as Friends of Panthertown and the Rotary Club of Sylva offer cleanup days that are a great way to enjoy the trails and leave natural areas, hiking trails, and public lands better than you found them. The Tuckaseigee Chapter of Trout Unlimited also plans annual clean-up days throughout Jackson County and beyond.

Strong local partnerships lead to public broadband access for Sylva

The new year brings free Wi-Fi internet to downtown Sylva, providing a safe, public space for students and residents who may not have access at their homes, and allowing visitors to stay in town longer. The new service is a result of a partnership between SkyFi, Inc., BalsamWest, the Southwestern Commission, Jackson County Economic Development, Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, Jackson County Tourism Development Authority, and a host of downtown businesses and building owners. When the Southwestern Commission received a grant from the State to distribute funding for public internet access in the far-western counties in the summer of 2021, Sylva leaders successfully applied for a grant for $50,000 for the project. Sylva-based SkyFi, Inc, received the contract to execute the grant and local internet provider BalsamWest provided service to the satellites used to distribute the internet wirelessly free of charge. “We are so lucky to work with such great partners in Jackson County,” said Russ Harris, Executive Director of the Southwestern Commission. “The public sector organizations like Jackson County Economic Development, Town of Sylva and the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce are organized and ready to move when opportunities come up, and then to have 42

internet service providers who are as community-minded as BalsamWest and SkyFi is really rare.” A key component of the project was the cooperation of numerous downtown businesses and building owners who allowed SkyFi to locate equipment on their buildings free of charge. These include Ward’s Plumbing and Heating, Hollifield Jewelers, David Schulman, Balsam Falls Brewing, the Sylva Herald, Mad Batter/Lazy Hiker, Greg and Jenny McPherson, Holly Hooper and Heather Norwood, Livingston Kelly, Chip Owen, Balsam Falls Brewing, B&B Gifts and In Your Ear Music, as well as the Sylva Police Department and Jackson County Library. "From an economic development perspective, the benefits are endless, but include the ability to promote local businesses on the landing page, and attract tourists who appreciate the benefit it provides, said Tiffany Henry, Jackson County Economic Developer. “It also provides a public space for students in the community who need the internet to complete homework assignments. I'm so proud we were able to make this happen and positively impact our community through this project!" Visitors to Sylva can to go to “Downtown-Sylva-WiFi” to access the network. No password is required and the service is free of charge to users.

For the third year in a row, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department are teaming up to provide fireworks in downtown Sylva for the Christmas holidays. This year's event will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16 in downtown Sylva. This is the perfect way to enjoy some holiday cheer with friends and family on the final weekend of holiday shopping before Christmas. There will be live holiday music being performed at or near the chamber from 6:30-7:30 p.m., plus free hot chocolate and perhaps even an appearance by ol' Saint Nick himself! Bring the kids to whisper those last minute gift ideas in Santa's ears. All you need to do is provide the spirit and come make some memories! Organizers will be encouraging consumers to do their holiday shopping locally with our small businesses, eating and dining at our smaller hometown restaurants and breweries, and enjoying the holidays safely in Jackson County. We look forward to seeing you!
