e are so grateful you have picked up this magazine. By doing so, you have taken the initial step toward acquainting yourself with Jackson County, N.C. We appreciate your interest in this beautiful place we proudly call home. Inside this annual community information publication, you will find everything necessary to plan a memorable extended stay or quick weekend getaway. Who knows? You might even want to stay and establish some new roots! This is the chamber’s 13th annual Our Town magazine. We are proud of Jackson County and its numerous fun-filled events, majestic places to visit, over 400 professional member businesses and incredibly talented, interesting and friendly citizens to encounter. The chamber is the lead producer of the Concerts on the Creek summer music series, the July 4 fireworks festivities, and is a strong supporter of shopping locally consistently. We are honored to provide two scholarships each year to Western Carolina University and Southwestern Community College. The chamber funds a Community Grant Program that has given back more than $144,000 to deserving non-profit organizations in Jackson County since its inception. We host monthly S.T.I.R. Business After Hours events, the popular Chamber Challenge Golf Tournament, and the WNC Fly Fishing Trail. Last year we started a new annual festival celebrating our home being the Trout Capital of N.C. July 4 Festivities A

fter a seven-year hiatus, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce proudly brought fireworks back to downtown Sylva in 2015. The fireworks will return for a fourth year in a row on July 4, 2018. This year’s special event will feature an exciting concert by one of the area’s finest classic hit bands, “Crocodile Smile,” followed by an impressive fireworks show when the sun goes down. The fireworks will be shot from property in the Sunrise Park district. “People will be able to see them from all over downtown Sylva,” said Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Julie Hooper Spiro. trout waters anywhere and is home to the nation’s first fly fishing trail - the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail. The trail maps out 15 prime spots to catch brown, rainbow and brook trout in the crystal-clear streams of the Great Smoky Mountains. Visitors had long recognized Jackson County as a premier destination for fly fishing, but often times weren’t exactly sure where to cast a line. So, the trail was created in 2009 to guide anglers to our best fishing locations. Whether you’re looking for wide-open rivers or secluded mountain streams, the WNC Fly Fishing Trail has you covered. The trail website – www. FlyFishingTrail.com – provides a map for download, descriptions and GPS coordinates for all 15 spots, plus a gallery for users to upload photos of their catches. It also includes a weekly fishing report. The centerpiece of the trail, and of Jackson County fishing in general, is the Tuckaseigee River. It is the county’s largest body of water, flowing some 40 miles from southeast to northwest. It has been referred to as “Western North Carolina’s best trout stream for fly anglers,” by The Charlotte Observer. In 2016, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce spearheaded an effort to become the official Trout Capital of N.C. In June of 2016,

legislators on both the N.C. House and Senate floors approved a resolution recognizing Jackson County as the “Premier Trout Fishing Destination” in the state. Follow the N.C. Jackson County contains 4,600 miles of trout streams and receives an annual stocking of 92,800 trout, which is the most of any county in the state. It also features the state’s longest contiguous stretch of N.C. Mountain Heritage Trout Waters. Jackson County is the home of the state record for the largest rainbow trout ever caught. Jackson has 31 public access points for fishing; supports fishing classes for children, is home to the nation’s largest river cleanup day in the country; and plays host to its own chapter of Trout Unlimited. There are now six retail fly shops and more than 25 guides in Jackson County. The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce hosts the second annual troutthemed Hook, Line & Drinker Festival on Saturday, May 19 at the Bridge Park in Sylva featuring fishing vendors, music, craft beer, food and children’s activities. Richland Balsam, along the Blue Ridge Parkway, is the highest point with an elevation of 6,410 feet. Whiteside Mountain in between Cashiers and Highlands features the highest vertical drop of 750 feet in the Eastern U.S. Popular waterfalls on the map include Whitewater Falls, the highest waterfall in the eastern United States; Cashiers’ Sliding Rock and Silver Run Falls. Business partners Mark Bryant and John Wermuth opened End of Main, a home provision store, in the summer of 2016. “We meet so many families, both locals and tourists who love our town,” said Wermuth. “The adults love being able to go to our “kid friendly” breweries and

shopping on Main Street.” Wermuth said the small town feel of Jackson County’s towns give visitors a warm, fuzzy feel often overlooked in larger cities. “On Thursday of last week we had a family come into the store. After looking around, the father said ‘Boy, I wish we would have known about Sylva before booking our rooms in Asheville.’ They loved our town and were having fun exploring downtown,” said Wermuth. “We were welcomed on Main Street by fellow business owners and have enjoyed every minute of our life on Main,” Wermuth added. “We’re glad we settled in Sylva.” The Stanberry brothers are virtually famous in Jackson County. Why not? These mountains are known

as much for the music that comes out of them as they are for their picturesque vistas, cascading waterfalls and alluring trails. Some of the world’s finest musicians have come from Western North Carolina and that rich tradition carries on today. Here in Jackson County, the Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce team up to produce the Concerts on the Creek series at the Bridge Park gazebo in Sylva every Friday from 7-9 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day. Concerts on the Creek events are free and open to the public with donations encouraged.

Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy the shows. Occasionally, these events will feature food truck and craft beer vendors as well. Since 1997, our friends, members and Platinum Partners at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino have been one of the largest employers in Western North Carolina. Regional Hospital opened the doors on their new Emergency Department last November to begin serving patients. Construction on the project began in October 2015. The facility is positioned on the east end of the hospital and features nearly 17,000 sq. ft., more than quadrupling the size of the previous emergency department. The new space has 15 private treatment rooms. Four of the rooms can be used for patients with psychiatric illnesses awaiting transfer to behavioral health facilities. All of the rooms are designed to become easily expandable to accommodate procedures requiring additional space. One of the rooms is dedicated to receiving patients arriving by ambulance.

“Our state-of-the-art emergency department represents our continued commitment to taking care of our community during emergent situations and beyond with acute, postacute, primary and subspecialty care,” said Steve Heatherly, CEO of Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital.
