Jackson’s communities

The Historic Jackson County Courthouse (now the home of the Jackson County Public Library) in Sylva is one of the most photographed spots in the county.

Home sweet home, from Cashiers to Cherokee

CASHIERS

Located at 3,486 feet above sea level, Cashiers is said to be named for a lost horse— an acknowledgement of the area’s dense forests, replete with laurel and rhododendron thickets. The town was hailed as a cool respite from the hot, humid shipping towns further south for mid-nineteenth century aristocrats. One such aristocratic family was the Hamptons. Wade Hampton III was the best-known member of the family due to his service as a general in the Confederate Army and active political career. In 1890, Dr. William S. Halstead, who 4

married into the Hampton family, bought the Hampton home, renaming it High Hampton after his ancestral home High Halstead in England. The High Hampton Country Club was later constructed on the same property. Now, Cashiers is home to several similar resorts and golf courses but also boasts great opportunities for outdoor recreation such as hiking and mountain climbing. Also of note are some of the smaller communities one passes traveling south on N.C. 107 from the county seat of Sylva to Cashiers such as

CULLOWHEE

Cullowhee, which means “white lily” in Cherokee, is an unincorporated township comprised mostly of

Western Carolina University and the surrounding businesses and residences designed to service faculty and student needs. Professor Robert Lee Madison founded Western Carolina University — originally chartered as Cullowhee High School — in August of 1889. Beginning about 1912, the status of the school was gradually raised. The university went through several name changes as its course offerings increased and it wasn’t until 1967, when the school was designated a regional university by the North Carolina

General Assembly, that the name Western Carolina University was finally settled upon. Near Cullowhee is the Forest Hills township, named for the 1878-1880 postmaster’s home, Forest Hill. Today, the township is home to a number of university faculty members.

DILLSBORO

Today a village of shops, crafters and family restaurants, Dillsboro has always been a center of railway activity. During the 1880s when the Western North Carolina Railroad was built,

the village bore a variety of names —Depot, New Webster, or Webster Station. In 1882, the Tunnel Post Office (named for the railroad’s Cowee Tunnel) was established with William Allen Dills as postmaster. It was the railroad’s developer, A.B. Andrews — for whom the town of Andrews in Cherokee County is named — who suggested the town adopt the name of its postmaster, becoming Dillsboro. Dills was responsible for building the Riverwood Shops, which overlook the Tuckasegee River, and what later became known as the C.J. Harris House. Harris is the namesake of Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva. Dills’ own home stood next to the Mt. Beulah Hotel — constructed in 1884 and today known as the Jarrett House. By 1888, Dillsboro had become the most important town along the railroad in terms of industry, with two sawmills, two clay mines, two livery

stables, six general stores, a shoemaker and several wood yards.

GLENVILLE

The Glenville community is centered on a large manmade lake with 26 miles of shore-line at 3,500 feet above sea level. The lake is the highest of its size east of the Mississippi River and is a favorite place for aquatic recreation. The area originally was known as the Hamburg Township, settled in 1827. In the late 1880s the area was thriving with industries including forestry, tanning and mining. It was in 1891 that the area was renamed Glenville. The lake itself was not created until 1940-41, when Nantahala Power and Light Company — owned by ALCOA — constructed a dam on the Tuckasegee River. The hydro-electric dam provided more electricity to help make aluminum for the war effort. The creation of the lake flooded Glenville’s schools,

a more direct route from Sylva to Dillsboro. The location of the railroad later was a primary factor in the movement to relocate the county seat from Webster to Sylva.

homes, businesses and farmlands. Today, the community is settled along the shores with several second and vacation homes, boating businesses and small shops.

SYLVA

Sylva is Jackson County’s retail and professional center where day-to-day services meet unique history. The town’s development rose with the construction of the Western North Carolina Railroad in the 1880s. Its name came about at the suggestion of Mae Hampton, daughter of E.R. Hampton, who is credited as being the founder of Sylva. E.R. Hampton had married into the Cannon family, which owned a sawmill where William D. Sylva, an itinerant Dane, had helped saw the logs that built the Hampton’s home. The railroad’s route through Sylva made it a prime location for the county seat — originally located in Webster — but 6

the issue of relocation resulted in years of bitter dispute between the two town’s representatives. The state legislature settled the dispute, giving Sylva permission to construct a courthouse so long as the town paid the moving costs to relocate. On Feb. 28, 1914, the new Sylva court-house, located on a hill overlooking Main Street, opened. Construction costs totaled $30,000. Today, the courthouse is reputed to be the most photographed in the country.

WEBSTER

The town of Webster is a quiet residential community situated on top of a hill overlooking the Tuckaseigee River. The town was created in the mid-1800s with the purchase of an 18-acre tract specifically designated to become the county seat. Within a few years of its settlement, a courthouse was erected. The town was incorpo-

rated in 1859, but over the next 20 years the town government became inactive —the first of several rises and falls in the town’s municipal development, and perhaps an early indicator of the town’s future. The story goes that during the construction of the Western North Carolina Railroad, county residents fully expected the railroad to run through Webster. However, the county’s state government representative — said to be fond of his drink — was taken aside at a crucial moment in the voting process and plied with liquor by an individual desiring

OUR TOWN

Whittier, Jackson County’s closest community to Cherokee, was another railroad town. Upon calling the area’s residents together, Clark Whittier proposed the formal establishment of a town: “It is my wish and I so move that we start operations here upon the principals and Word of God, including all morality, especially temperance and prohibition of the strongest form.” The town was incorporated in 1907 and by 1913 boasted a dry store, hotel, physician and surgeon, plus sawmills, lumber yards, three churches and a school. However, with the Great Depression the town lost much of its industry as the demand for lumber declined. By 1993 Whittier’s charter was repealed and today the community is mostly residential.

CHHS staff and volunteers served on the front lines of the “extraction team” for six hours side by side with HSUS and the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department. They were breathing fresh air for the first time,” said CHHS Executive Director David Stroud. “As Vice Chairman of the N.C. Animal Federation, one of my top priorities is to get meaningful puppy mill legislation passed to mandate humane standards of care for commercial animal breeding operations like this one,” Stroud continued. Fourth of July Fireworks Return to Sylva

Bringing back the

BOOM!

After a seven-year hiatus, the Jackson

County Chamber of Commerce is proudly bringing fireworks back to downtown Sylva on Saturday, July 4, 2015. This year’s special event will feature a full fireworks show when the sun goes down on Independence Day. The fireworks will no longer be shot in front of the old courthouse/current library but from property in the Sunrise Park district donated for use by Wayne Smith. “We certainly owe Wayne a huge thank you for allowing us to shoot fireworks from his property,” said Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Julie Spiro. “People will be able to see them from all over downtown Sylva, out toward the hospital, and from the south toward WalMart. It’s truly an ideal location.” Fireworks were first shot in Sylva by the local chapter of the Jaycees back in 1976 according to WRGC owner Roy Burnette. They were shot from atop Kings Mountain. “We were probably lucky it rained, otherwise all of Kings Mountain might have gone up in smoke,” laughed Burnette. Later, the Jackson County Parks and

Recreation Department moved the fireworks to the courthouse area in the mid-80s, according to retired Jackson County Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Carpenter, who ironically celebrates a birthday each Independence Day. When renovations occured at the historic courthouse/new public library,

the fireworks in downtown ended for safety reasons and moved for a few years to the Dillsboro rock quarry. Over the last year, the chamber has worked closely with county and fireworks officials to secure a tremendous American made show for this Independence Day and many more to come.

There will be a bluegrass performance by Darren Nicholson and Friends from 4-6 p.m. Nicholson is a Jackson County native and member of the award-winning band Balsam Range. He will be followed by a three-hour performance by The Business, a firstclass rhythm and blues band sure to get peo-

ple up and dancing from 6:30-9:30 p.m., before the fireworks show at dark. “I’m so excited to see it come back,” said Carpenter. “It’s going to be spectacular. Weddings

Big time small town weddings Jackson County is

quickly becoming a renowned location for “destination weddings,” attracting brides and grooms from all across the country to our beautiful neck of the woods. Whether you’re a local or an out of towner tying the knot in the area, the area is home to many wonderful vendors that can make your special day unique and memorable. Julie Sylvester of Pinnacle Events in Sylva organized a wedding in Sylva last summer and utilized many local vendors in the process, working almost exclusively with Jackson County-based businesses. “We talked about how to market Jackson County and stay close to home more often and use our vendors here locally,” said Sylvester after meeting with photographer Ruby Peoples about the July 8, 2014 ceremony that took place at McGuire Gardens in downtown Sylva. “They love it having a local feel and keeping it inside one community,” said Sylvester about how the families in20

volved feel about keeping the ceremony and its vendors local. Sylva Florist Ray Nations said he thinks 80 percent of his brides are here for a “destination wedding.” “I’ve found a bride may have attended Western Carolina University or reflect on something they remember about this area and want to come back for their wedding.” Sylvester said the weddings generally run smoother when the local vendors know each other from previous events. “It makes a huge difference,” she said. “If someone is having a hard day, we work together and pick each other up and help out.” Nations and Sylvester agreed that they are seeing more creative and non-traditional weddings in the area. As for what makes Jackson County a unique wedding destination spot, Sylvester said, “Definitely in the mountains, it’s more casual and very simple.” Nations agreed. “It’s relaxed, but yet it’s elegant,” he said. “I’d sum it up as mountain elegance,” said Sylvester.

ne of the most popular activities in Jackson County is to take a hike to one of our many plataus, vistas and waterfalls. Perhaps the nearest and most requested trail in proximity to Sylva is Pinnacle Park. This strenuous six to seven-mile unmarked trail takes about three to four hours to complete round trip. An uphill climb on the way up rewards hikers to a spectacular 270-degree view of Cullowhee, Webster and Sylva. The return hike is refreshingly all downhill. From Sylva (Exit 85) Drive east on US 23/74 for 0.5 miles, then turn left on Steeple Rd., for 0.2 miles until dead end at Old Asheville Highway. Turn left, continue for 0.6 miles; turn right on Fisher Creek Rd. Continue 2.1 miles until dead end at park entrance. Hike straight up the trail behind the iron gate. Stay on main trail and cross creek twice early on. After an hour or so, cross number feeder streams and pass cascading waterfall on left. Five or 10 minutes after the waterfall, take the trail to the left. The trail bears left again at a small clearing on Pinnacle Ridge leading out to the overlook. Hiking and waterfall maps are available at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center and can be downloaded from www.mountainlovers.com. Call 828586-2155 for more information. 22

Music

Tunes and harmonies ring through the valleys M

usic is as synonimous with this region as the mountains themselves. Western North Carolina has produced some of the world’s finest musicians and is home to a thriving live music scene. Here in Jackson County, there are two yearly concert series that run from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The Greater Cashiers Area Merchants Association (GCAMA) organizes the Groovin’ on the Green concert series which takes place in Cashiers at the Village Commons. On the northern end of the county in Sylva, the Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce team up to produce the Concerts on the Creek series at the Bridge Park gazebo. Both events are free and open to the public with donations encouraged. Following are the scheduled dates for both events. Check www.visitcashiersvalley.com for updates on performers in Cashiers, and www.mountainlovers.com for performer updates in Sylva. Both organizations maintain Facebook pages and are Blue Ridge Music Trail partners.

Waterfalls

County’s waterfalls include highest in eastern U.S.

Jackson County is home to more than 20 waterfalls, including the highest waterfall in the Eastern United States; Whitewater Falls (at right), in Sapphire. To get to Whitewater falls, from the intersection of Highways 64 and 107 at the crossroads of Cashiers, drive east on U.S 64 for 10.4 miles. Then turn right going south on N.C. 281. Continue for 9.9 miles and turn left into the parking lot. There is a short walk to the lookout and there are trails to the top and bottom of Whitewater Falls. For a complete list and map of hiking trails and waterfalls in Jackson County, call 828-586-2155 or download the map at www.mountainlovers.com. WARNING: Waterfalls are lovely, but can be dangerous! People have died! Watch for slick rocks and stay away from the tops of falls. Take no chances.
