hank you for taking the first step toward learning more about Jackson County, N.C. We appreciate your interest in the place we proudly call home. With this relocation and community information magazine, we aim to entice your visit to our neck of the woods and hope you consider staying! Inside this 11th annual magazine produced by the chamber, you’ll learn more about our majestic region, its many wonderful events and our unique and highly recommended member businesses. The chamber is the lead producer of the Concerts on the Creek summer music series, the July 4 fireworks celebration, and is a strong supporter of shopping small and locally. We partner with the Greater Cashiers Area Merchants Association (GCAMA) to offer a reciprocal membership discount across the county. The chamber provides two scholarships each year to WCU and SCC. Additionally, the chamber funds a Community Grant Program each year that has given back $93,100 to deserving non-profit organizations in Jackson County. We also assist with Outdoor Movie Nights, host monthly S.T.I.R. Business After Hours events, the popular Stonewall Challenge Golf Tournament, and the WNC Fly Fishing Trail. Jackson County shines from head to toe
CASHIERS
Located at 3,486 feet above sea level, Cashiers is said to be named for a lost horse— an acknowledgement of the area’s dense forests, replete with laurel and rhododendron thickets. The village was hailed as a cool respite from the hot, humid shipping towns further south for mid-19th century aristocrats. Now tourists and part-time residents from all over the country travel to Cashiers in the summer months for the very same reasons. Cashiers is home to several world-renowned resorts and golf courses but also boasts great opportunities for recreation such as hiking,

shopping, dining, outdoor music events and festivals, mountain climbing and much more. Also of note are some of the smaller communities that surround Cashiers. Traveling south on N.C. 107 from the county seat of Sylva to Cashiers sits East LaPorte, along the Tuckaseigee River. East LaPorte leads into the community of Tuckasegee which is the last valley community before climbing elevation about 1,000 feet to the Glenville community and ultimately to the village of Cashiers. Just east of Cashiers is the Sapphire community, yet another wonderous neck of
woods featuring lush forests, lakes, waterfalls, country club communities and much more.
CULLOWHEE
Cullowhee, which means “white lily” in Cherokee, is an unincorporated township comprised mostly of Western Carolina University and the surrounding businesses and residences designed to service campus needs. Professor Robert Lee Madison founded Western Carolina University — originally chartered as Cullowhee High School — in Aug., 1889. About 1912, the university went through several name changes as its course offerings increased and it wasn’t

until 1967, when the school was designated a regional university by the NC General Assembly, that the name Western Carolina University was finally settled upon. Near Cullowhee is the Village of Forest Hills, named for the 1878-1880 postmaster’s home, Forest Hill. Forest Hills is primarily a residential area for university faculty members. Cullowhee is the fastest growing area in Jackson County.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is just a short drive from the center of downtown Sylva and offers spectacular long-range views of Jackson County vistas. railway activity. During the 1880s when the Western North Carolina Railroad was built, the village bore a variety of names —Depot, New Webster, or Webster Station. In 1882, the Tunnel Post Office (named for the railroad’s Cowee Tunnel) was established with William Allen Dills as postmaster. It was the railroad’s developer, A.B. Andrews who suggested the town adopt the name of its postmaster, becoming Dillsboro. Dills was responsible for building the Riverwood Shops, which overlook the Tuckaseigee River, and what later became known as the C.J. Harris House. Harris is the namesake of Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva. Dills’ own home stood next to the Mt. Beulah Hotel — constructed in 1884 and today known as the Jarrett House. By 1888, Dillsboro had become the most important town along the railroad in terms of industry, with two sawmills, two clay mines, two livery stables, six general stores, a shoemaker and several wood yards. Nowadays, Dillsboro is proud to host annual festivals featuring Arts and Crafts, Lights and Luminaries, an Easter Hat parade, and Pottery Fest, just to name a few. The popular Great Smoky
Mountains Railroad makes a stop in Dillsboro throughout the busy spring, summer and fall months. Each day, this community welcomes fresh-faced tourists with charm, hand-made arts and crafts and delicious dishes fit for any palate.
GLENVILLE
The Glenville community surrounds a large man-made lake with 26 miles of shoreline at 3,500 feet above sea level. The lake is the highest of its size east of the Mississippi River and is a favorite place for aquatic recreation. The area originally was known as the Hamburg Township, settled in 1827. In the late 1880s the area was thriving with industries including forestry, tanning and mining. It was in 1891 that the area was renamed Glenville. The lake itself was not created until 1940-41, when Nantahala Power and Light Company — owned by ALCOA — constructed a dam on the Tuckaseigee River. The hydro-electric dam provided more electricity to help make aluminum for the war effort. The creation of the lake flooded Glenville’s schools, homes, businesses and farmlands. Today, the community is
settled along the shores with several second hand vacation homes, boating businesses and small shops.
SYLVA
Sylva is Jackson County’s retail and professional center where day-to-day services meet unique history. The town’s development
rose with the construction of the Western North Carolina Railroad in the 1880s. Its name came about at the suggestion of Mae Hampton, daughter of E.R. Hampton, who is credited as being the founder of Sylva. E.R. Hampton had married into the Cannon family, which owned a sawmill where

Sylva, an itinerant Dane, had helped saw the logs that built the Hampton’s home. The railroad’s route through Sylva made it a prime location for the county seat — originally located in Webster — but the issue of relocation resulted in years of bitter dispute between the two town’s representatives. The state legislature settled the dispute, giving Sylva permission to construct a courthouse so long as the town paid the moving costs to relocate. On Feb. 28, 1914, the new Sylva court-house, located on a hill overlooking Main Street, opened. Construction costs totaled $30,000. Today, the courthouse is reputed to be the most photographed in the country.
WEBSTER
The town of Webster is a quiet residential community situated on top of a hill overlooking the Tuckaseigee River. It is situated just south of Sylva before entering Cullowhee. The town was created in the mid-1800s with the purchase of an 18-acre tract

specifically designated to become the county seat. Within a few years of its settlement, a courthouse was erected. The town was incorporated in 1859, but over the next 20 years the town government became inactive. During the construction of the Western North Carolina Railroad, county residents fully expected the railroad to run through Webster. However, the county’s state government representative — said to be fond of his drink — was taken aside at a crucial moment in the voting process and plied with liquor by an individual desiring a more direct route from Sylva to Dillsboro. The location of the railroad later was a primary factor in the movement to relocate the county seat from Webster to Sylva. Today, the community is a home to Southwestern Community College, many fly fishing opportunities along the river, and a vibrant community board that recently renovated a World War II monument. A town logo and historic tour/trail was also created.
WHITTIER
Whittier, Jackson County’s closest community to Cherokee, was another rail-
road town. Upon calling the area’s residents together, Clark Whittier proposed the formal establishment of a town: “It is my wish and I so move that we start operations here upon the principals and Word of God, including all morality, especially temperance and prohibition of the strongest form.” The town was incorporated in 1907 and by 1913 boasted a dry store, hotel, physician and surgeon, plus sawmills, lumber yards, three churches and a school. However, with the Great Depression the town lost much of its industry as the demand for lumber declined. By 1993 Whittier’s charter was repealed and today the community is mostly residential. It is home to the Smoky Mountain Country Club and modest shopping and dining opportunities for a quaint and quiet residential atmosphere.

On the Plateau
Sapphire a gem of outdoor thrills it’s warm and W hether sunny or cold and
snowy, the Sapphire Valley Resort in the southern end of Jackson County has it covered for any outdoor enthusiast. In 2015, the Sapphire Valley-based resort, located along Highway 64 just east of Cashiers, opened the Vordach zip lining canopy tour. This 10-element tour is fun for all ages and offers a beautiful bird’s eye view of the valley. Sapphire Valley Resort also offers golf at the 32-acre, nine-hole executive Red Bird Golf Course. For water enthusiasts, Fairfield Lake is just across the street on Highway 64,
offering folks a chance to simply soak up the sun on a man-made beach while gazing at magnificent rocky faced mountains. There are boat rentals also available for those who want to explore the 55+ acre lake. In winter months, the resort offers the county’s only snow skiing option. Built in 1964, the ski area features a recently upgraded chair lift, along with upgraded snow making equipment. fter a seven-year hiatus, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce proudly brought fireworks back to downtown Sylva in 2015. The fireworks will return in 2016 in what the chamber hopes becomes a new tradition of family fun and patriotism. This year’s special event will feature a spectacular fireworks show when the sun goes down on July 4. The fireworks will be shot from property in the Sunrise Park district donated for use by Wayne Smith. “We certainly owe Wayne a huge thank you for allowing us to shoot fireworks from his property,” said Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Julie Spiro. “People will be able to see them from all over downtown Sylva.” The holiday will start with a performance by rising WNC country music artist Joe Lasher Jr. from 4-6 p.m., followed by a three-hour performance by Groovetown, a first-class rhythm and blues band sure to get people up and dancing from 6:30-9:30 p.m. The fireworks display will begin at dark. Harris Regional Hospital
New emergency room will enhance region Harris Regional Hospital, a
Duke LifePoint hospital, broke ground on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015 for the hospital’s new emergency department, which will replace the current emergency room that has been serving the community for nearly 30 years. The future location of the new emergency department will be adjacent to the hospital’s main lobby on the east side of the hospital. The new emergency department will be an 18,000-sq.-ft. addition to the hospital and include a total of 23 beds, 14 of which will be for acute care, five for ‘fast track’ or less severe injuries or illnesses, and four for patients awaiting transfer to a behavioral health facility. In addition to relocating to the front of the hospital, the space will be significantly larger than the current emergency department, which has a total of 13 beds. The new space is designed to maximize efficiencies and improve environmental aesthetics for patients, physicians and staff. Construction was expected to last 10 to 12 months. “It is both an honor and a privilege to build the new emergency department for our community,” said Steve Heatherly, CEO of Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital. “Plans

It is a significant investment representing an $11 million upgrade to our facility.” The project was made possible by Harris Regional Hospital’s acquisition by Duke LifePoint Healthcare, which was completed in August 2014. In purchasing Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital, Duke LifePoint made a minimum capital commitment of $43 million in investments to the hospitals over an eightyear period.
“Seeing the emergency department become a reality is a very important milestone for our hospital board and for the community,” said Bunny Johns, board chair for Harris and Swain. “The emergency department is a ‘must-have’ for our community, and we are grateful to Duke LifePoint for acknowledging the need and dedicating the resources to make it happen.” Harris Regional Hospital provides EMS services for Jackson County and operates and staffs six ambulances throughout the county. The new emergency department will continue to serve as a hub for Harris EMS in coordination with regional EMS providers transporting patients to Harris Regional

Hospital. “We are excited to provide our own EMS staff and our regional EMS partners and their patients with a new space featuring a highly-coordinated system of care for those needing emergency medical attention across the region,” said Anetra Jones, Chief Nurse Executive for Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital. As a note of trivia, part of the movie ‘The Fugitive’ starring Harrison Ford was filmed in 1993 at Harris Regional Hospital featuring the emergency room as the backdrop for several of the scenes. Also in 2016, Harris Regional Hospital is slated to complete a $6 million renovation to the New Generations Family Birthing Center where around 600 babies are delivered per year serving families from around the region with outstanding women’s and children’s care. Harris Regional Hospital, established in 1925, is an 86-bed acute and specialty care facility serving Western North Carolina with more than 100 physicians practicing in locations throughout a multi-county region. Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital began an affiliation in 1997 and joined Duke LifePoint Healthcare in 2014.

Throughout the year, the town of Dillsboro hosts a wide
array of fun festivals, ranging from Easter Hat parades to arts and crafts shows to a Lights and Luminaries event to celebrate the holidays. Following is a list of the events planned for 2016:
Dillsboro Easter Hat Parade
Held on Saturday, March 26, 2016, the actual parade starts at 2 p.m., but come early at 10:30 a.m., to make a hat, get your face painted, meet the Easter Bunny, go on Easter egg hunts and much more. Antique cars from the Old Timers Model A Club lead the parade and there are plenty of prizes announced afterward.
Front Street Arts and Crafts Show
On Saturday, June 18, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Front Street Arts & Crafts Show features some of the best regional artisans. There are over 40 booths to display the hand-made craftsmanship of artists from around the region, along with family entertainment and festival food.

Whiteside Mountain is not only one of the most spectacular viewing areas for vistas, but it is also an excellent hiking trail.
is to take a brisk hike along one of our many trails. Many scale to rocky plateaus, or lead to beautiful cascading waterfalls. Others meander through lush green forests or across winding and scenic whitewater rivers. One of the prettiest and relatively easy excursions is a trip about 45 min-
utes south of Sylva to Whiteside Mountain in Cashiers, at the southern tip of Jackson County. This easy two-mile loop along the Eastern Continental Divide reaches 4,930 feet in elevation and has the highest vertical drop in the Eastern U.S. (750 feet). DIRECTIONS: At intersection of Highway 107 and 64 in Cashiers, go 4.7
miles west on Highway 64. Turn left on Whiteside Mountain Rd., (SR 1690) at brown Whiteside Mountain Trail sign. Go 1.1 miles passing Wildcat Cliffs Country Club on right. WNC Fly Fishing Trail
Trail of tight lines in its sixth year, the N ow WNC Fly Fishing Trail
is the first fly fishing trail in the U.S. There are 15 different places to fly fish on Mountain Heritage Trout waters in Jackson County. Anglers can acquire a threeday permit for only $5 at www. ncwildlife.org. Whether searching for quantity or size, brown or rainbow trout, open water or streams, the WNC Fly Fishing Trail Trail has everything covered. The Tuckaseigee River is the most accessible river in the southeastern U.S. Jackson County has the longest continuous stretch of
N.C. Mountain Heritage Trout Waters. There are 4,600 miles of water to fish and 94,300 fish are stocked each year, the most in N.C. Stop by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center and pick up a water resistant fly fishing trail map. The WNC Fly Fishing Trail has been featured in over 100 media publications, websites and television shows. The Pines Recreation Area
Where mountains meet the beach June 6, 2015, Duke O nEnergy celebrated the
opening of the new swim beach and recreation amenities on Lake Glenville. The eagerly-awaited Pines Recreation Area provides new outdoor resources for residents and visitors in warmer months. Amenities at the Pines Recreation Area include a swim beach, fishing pier, picnic tables, vault toilets, informational signage and parking lot improvements. The amenities are fully handicap accessible. The site also features a life jacket loaner board which allows visitors to check out a life jacket at no charge and then return it to the board when done. The Pines Recreation Area is an outcome of recommendations from the Tuckasegee Cooperative Stakeholder team to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for Duke
Energy’s Nantahala Area Hydro Project License Applications submitted in 2003. Other Duke Energy recreation resources in the area include the trail head to the High Falls kayak launch across the road from the Pines Recreation Area which has become popular for scenic day hikes. The nearby Powerhouse Access Area and Pine Creek Access Area provide ramps for boating access to Lake Glenville. Located at 1965 Pine Creek Road, the Pines Recreation Area officially opened on May 22, 2015. The hours of operation are sunrise to sunset. There is no lifeguard on duty and pets are not allowed. For the safety of visitors, alcoholic beverages and glass containers are not permitted. Parking is available at the site and across the road in the High Falls trail head lot. Concerts on the Creek
Mountains a mecca for live music is as M usic synonymous
with this region as the mountains themselves. Western North Carolina has produced some of the world’s finest musicians and is home to a thriving live music scene. Here in Jackson County, there are two yearly concert series that run from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The Greater Cashiers Area Merchants Association (GCAMA) organizes the Groovin’ on the Green concert series which takes place in Cashiers at the Village Commons. On the northern end of the county in Sylva, the Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce team up to produce the Concerts on the Creek series at the Bridge Park gazebo. Both events are free and open to the public with donations encouraged. Following are the scheduled dates for both events. Check www.visitcashiersvalley.com for updates on performers in Cashiers, and
www.mountainlovers. com for performer updates in Sylva. Both organizations maintain Facebook pages and are Blue Ridge Music Trail partners.

Waterfalls all around us
Highest waterfall in Eastern U.S. in Sapphire Jackson County is home to more than 20 wa-
terfalls, including the highest waterfall in the Eastern United States; Whitewater Falls in Sapphire. At right is Silver Run Falls, which is about a 30-minute drive south of Sylva in Cashiers. DIRECTIONS: From Sylva, go south on Highway 107 to Cashiers. At the intersection with Highway 64, continue south on 107 for 2.4 miles. Park on the left in the gravel area (with a small gray sign at end. If you pass an “Entering Nantahala National Forest” sign, youv’e gone too far.) Follow trail for 50 yards. Cross stream on fallen log and continue another 100 yards to Silver Run Falls. People have died! Watch for slick rocks and stay away from the tops of falls. Take no chances.

Bridge installation expands greenway one-mile paved T his path with gentle
grade provides a recreational opportunity for people of all abilities. Enjoy the shade of the tree cover and views of the river as you walk, run, or roll along the path. The Greenway may be accessed at the Monteith Gap Trail head located at the end of Monteith Gap Road, in Cullowhee (enter 35.32309,-83.18816 into Google Maps for directions). The Greenway is open for non motorized forms of recreation during daylight
hours. Please keep all pets on a leash no longer than six feet and clean up pet waste. In January of 2016, an expansion of the Greenway included a walking bridge that connected the north terminus of the path to Old Cullowhee Road near Rolling Green Drive.
