CENTER STORY The Sky’s the Limit

By Andrea Kronzek

The new play scape at the Bender Early Childhood Center invites children to explore, create and imagine in a natural setting.

This child went out on a limb to test his balancing skills.

“I had the opportunity to play with my 3-year-old son on the new play scape today and was amazed by how each apparatus, created by nature, inspired his imagination. He baked cookies from start to finish, moving from the house to the sand area to the wooden kitchen, exercised his climbing skills on the purposefully-placed fallen tree, and delighted in showing me several of the secrets the playground held that he had discovered with his friends.”

group projects. Loose parts—circles from logs and other wooden shapes—invite a child to build and create. The mud kitchen is a place for experiments and dramatic play.

— Preschool parent Pamela Kaufman The Bender JCC’s Early Childhood Center is the preschool of choice for so many in our community. Being housed in the Bender JCC affords our students unique advantages, such as use of the gym and exposure to quality cultural arts programming. Our knowledgeable and caring staff members are dedicated to nurturing each child, challenging them and broadening their horizons in a safe and supportive setting. Our recently-renovated indoor space reflects our commitment to offering a quality education infused with Jewish values and tradition. And now, with our new natural play space, each child’s imagination, creativity, and sense of wonder are expanded in our outdoor classroom.

“Many articles and books have been written about the children of this generation being nature deprived,” states Ora Cohen Rosenfeld, Bender Early Childhood Center director. “Video games and indoor play have taken the place of the backyards and woods we used to play in when we were young.” Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, the Bender ECC believes in the competency of children and their ability to construct knowledge when provided with an environment rich in opportunities for exploration, problem solving, and risk taking. Each day the children engage with the play space in ways which were anticipated and ways which surprise and amaze the adults who observe them. New paths for learning constantly emerge as the children are challenged and inspired by the natural environment. Last year, Bender ECC staff met with parents, students and a landscape architect to envision the new playground. As a result, traditional metal structures have been replaced with a fallen tree and a hill to climb. A path of different textures encircles the hill for those who want to take a road trip on tricycles. Students can create a stream through a large sand pit by operating a child-sized pump. Picnic tables are available for dining al fresco or for small-

Pamela Kaufman says that when passing the playground on the way to or from school, her son loves to tell her about the new discoveries his class made or games they made up while playing outside. “It is just one more reason I’m so grateful he is a student here, able to take advantage of all of the incredible and unique resources this center offers.” To learn more about the natural play scape or the Bender Early Childhood Center, join us at an open house on Tuesday, February 14 at 10 AM (RSVP to 301.348.3839 or preschool@ benderjccgw.org) or contact Ora Cohen Rosenfeld at 301.348.3830.

Parent Jenna Breitstein says that the new playground encourages creativity and healthy risk-taking in the way her son plays. “He tells me about how he raced through a lake of mud, slept in a cave with bears, and turned into a rain drop that bounced around wooden steps. I’m thrilled to hear him play in this way!”

Members, participants, volunteers and staff make up a community with a shared responsibility for safety and security using our combined eyes and ears to actively monitor our campus and building. “If you see something, say something” continues to be an important element of our security plan. Now, in addition to vigilance, our JCC community, and Jewish communities around the country, must also be resilient. We cannot allow anti-Semitism and hatred to overshadow and disrupt our lives and our community. When we come together, we overcome adversity. The threatening calls to JCCs may well continue or they may shift to other Jewish institutions. By working together we will take the necessary action, adapt and continue to enjoy the benefits of coming together as a Jewish community.

We have been the target of hatred, but this show of support from across the country and across faiths is truly a gift of love that we needed. Rev. Harvey’s letter shared a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” There is a little more light and love in the world directed our way. This is the country I remember. May we channel this kindness into our own resolve and strength as our community faces future challenges. May we use this opportunity to build new bridges of solidarity and understanding with other faith groups. And, may we take the time to do an act of kindness and reflect that light and love on others in need of our support. Amen.
